Applicants are invited for the position of Chair in Structural Metals for Gas Turbine Applications, in the School of Engineering which has 3 main research centres; Civil and Computational Engineering Centre, Materials Research Centre and the Multidisciplinary Nanotechnology Centre.

The Materials Research Centre hosts a Rolls-Royce University Technology Centre (UTC) in mechanical characterisation of materials. Recently, Rolls-Royce and EPSRC have launched a Strategic Partnership in the area of structural metallic systems for gas turbine applications to deliver not only disruptive materials technologies for application in gas turbines but also the trained researchers and scientists needed to develop and design in these

advanced systems. The total value of this programme will exceed £50 Million over the period and will involve the Swansea UTC with those at Birmingham and Cambridge Universities.

The Swansea UTC is focussed on mechanical characterisation of advanced structural materials, leading to an improved understanding of components operating under demanding service conditions in the gas turbine. This research is underpinned by a suite of world class facilities for mechanical testing, with these laboratories due for significant expansion in 2010. We are looking for an experienced candidate, with a proven international research background in high temperature fatigue and creep deformation mechanisms to provide further momentum and leadership in the field of mechanical characterisation and component lifing.

You will also be expected to attract and supervise additional research funding from EPSRC, Technology Strategy Board (TSB) and Industry. The

commercialisation of academic research into industry will also be encouraged in line with University wide knowledge transfer initiatives.
