Research Engineer

Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory

The Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory at the College of Engineering seeks applicants for the position of Research Engineer. This position will facilitate research efforts being conducted in a cleanroom laboratory environment and provide support and direction to laboratory users and co-workers. The Research Engineer reports directly to the Principal Research Engineer in the Micro and Nanotechnology Laboratory located on the Urbana-Champaign campus.

 

Specific duties and responsibilities include maintaining and the repairing various processing tools operated within the MNTL cleanroom laboratories. The equipment that the Research Engineer is responsible for is primarily used for chemical vapor deposition (CVD) processes. These systems include low-pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), and metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD. This position also provides equipment operation training and instruction sets for users of the above systems. Developing, characterizing, and documenting processes that utilize the Above-mentioned equipment are also required duties of this position. The Research Engineer consults, assists, and performs tasks as required by any contracted “foundry” work.

 

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field and at least 5 years’ experience working with chemical vapor deposition systems and associated fabrication processes. A good understanding of electrical and mechanical schematics is also required. Additionally, proficiency at diagnosing and repairing electromechanical systems and instrumentation are required. Excellent communication skills are a must.

 

Preferred Qualifications: A familiarity with and experience working in a cleanroom environment are preferred. A comprehensive understanding of vacuum systems and leak detection methods are also desired.

 

The Research Engineer position is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
