SAIC-Frederick, Inc.’s Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The LASP contributes to improving human health, developing new treatments, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane treatment of animals. The Veterinary Associate position will be responsible for providing technical assistance to the animal program veterinarian to include quality assurance of animal care and use and clinical observation of research animals Specific duties comprise performing a variety of technical procedures involving animals to include surgery, injections, gavage and bleeding techniques; developing new or evaluating and modifying existing technical procedures; conducting clinical observation and treatment of animals and quality assurance; maintaining essential drugs and supply inventory; serving as technical and clinical backup in the absence of the attending veterinarian. The Veterinary Associate position will interface and communicate regularly with facility technIcal, veterinary and lead scientific staff regarding animal health issues. The position will be responsible for conducting or participating in training programs for animal care, technical and scientific staff. Work may involve the use of potentially hazardous material or may be located in areas where such materials are used. The use of personal protective equipment and strict adherence to safety protocols are required.
REQUIRED SKILLS: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research, laboratory animal science or four (4) years related experience in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. In addition to education requirements, a minimum of four (4) years of related biomedical or laboratory animal science experiences is required. Extensive experience in laboratory animal science techniques germane to animal-based research including sterile procedures, safety procedures, instrument use, anesthesia and euthanasia techniques, and commonly used medications for treating rodent health issues. Knowledge of applicable policies, guidelines and regulations that govern the care, use and welfare of animals in biomedical research. Ability to function independently in an animal facility and exercise judgment in evaluating animal health issues and quality assurance of technical procedures and husbandry issues; maintain accurate records. This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
