The Laboratory of Molecular Technology is a high throughput genetics and genomics laboratory providing cutting edge technologies to the National Cancer Institute. The Research Associate II will be responsible for standard and ultra high throughput Roche 454 sequencing for the Core facility. Production of fragmented libraries, preparation of emulsion PCR (emPCR), 454 machine runs. Robotically controlled reagents, sequence rescue 454 library production, QC by Agilent BioAnalyser and NanoDrop, PicoGreen and RiboGreen, sample and process tracking through WIKI-LIMS. All projects are of a highly specialized nature and require technical proficiency and judgment. Responsible for all ongoing daily activities, maintenance of equipment, use protocols/logbooks/databases, sample quality control for both quality and quantity, and trouble-shooting of problems with direct coordination of supervisor. May require the use of personal protective equipment and requires adherence to strict safety protocols.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. In addition to education requirement, a minimum of five (5) years related molecular biology experience is required, two years of which is proven experience in DNA sequencing, data review, and stringent record keeping. Knowledge of basic subject matter of molecular biology tools including hybridization, ligation, fragmentation, end polishing, cloning (molecular library production), PCR, fragment generation and cleaning, magnetic bead theory, Biotin:Streptavidin isolation systems, sample handling/tracking required as well as sterile/clean room techniques. Ability to organize reagents and samples for sophisticated automated high-throughput analysis in support of genomic and diagnostic studies. This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
DESIRED SKILLS: Experience in NextGen sequencing (454, Illulmina,Solid) / DNA sequencing / genotyping and work in a core / service facility. Experience with molecular biology techniques, high throughput work, and maintaining reagents and supplies. General knowledge of molecular based biology and coursework in biological and chemical sciences. Ability to interface with LIMS (esp WIKI-LIMS) preferred.
