The Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking 1-2 post-doctoral candidates in the areas of nanomaterials synthesis and applications in environmental sensing, catalysis or photocatalysis, and energy utilization. The candidates will actively participate in projects on nanoparticle-hydrogel based chemical sensor fabrication and/or new nanocatalyst development for the photodegradation of biomass. In particular, the candidate will be involved in nanomaterials synthesis, characterization, and catalytic photochemical experiments. The candidate should have a strong background in chemistry, material science and nanotechnology, and be able to design and execute experiments and familiar with a range of wet-chemical and advanced spectroscopic techniques to carry out the experiment. A strong publication record is a plus.
The technical resources available at ORNL are outstanding and the opportunities to participate in multi-disciplinary research are exceptional. The Environmental Sciences Division at ORNL has a strong core expertise and research facilities in wet chemical synthesis, environmental chemistry and technology. ORNL hosts two world-class neutron sources (http://neutrons.ornl.gov) and Centers of Nanophase Materials Science (www.cnms.ornl.gov) and Joint Institute of Biological Sciences. Opportunities exist to collaborate with skilled researchers in chemistry, biology, geochemistry, environmental microbiology, and physical and material sciences within ORNL, at collaborating Universities and other National Laboratories.
The positions require Ph.D. in chemistry, material science, biochemistry, or a related discipline with demonstrated experience using advanced techniques for nanomaterials fabrication, characterization, and application. Strong background in nanotechnology, catalysis, photochemistry, electrochemistry or polymer chemistry is desirable. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. The candidate must have the ability to work in a team environment and interact effectively with a broad range of colleagues.
