SAIC: From Science to Solutions ® The Clinical Services Program’s primary mission is to perform sequential studies of immune function in patients with cancer, AIDS, chronic granulomatous disease or other diseases associated with immunologic dysfunction, as well as to monitor viral load in patients with HIV. Will conduct research in the Laboratory of Human Retrovirology (LHR) in the Clinical Services Program to support NIAID clinical trials for HIV infected patients. LHR has first identified that Interluekin-27 (IL-27) is an anti-viral cytokine. Candidate will characterize the mechanism of HIV resistance in a novel subset of macrophages induced by a combination of the cytokine from human peripheral blood monocytes and will identify potential anti-viral host factors on macrophages surface as well as in cytoplasm. May be required to handle infectious material in BL2* level laboratory. REQUIRED SKILLS: Doctorate degree from an accredited college/university in a biological science and a strong background in immunology and molecular biology. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. None required beyond the educational requirement. Experience required with tissue culture skills using mammalian cells. Must have an interest in host defense against infection with pathogens and experience in cell culture, molecular biology and immunological techniques. In the project, it is required to have multiple skills in cell biology, cellular immunology and biochemistry, cloning of HIV RNA and DNA, construction of expression vectors, point mutagenesis, western blot, ELISA, qRT-PCR, isolation of cells from peripheral blood, purification of recombinant proteins, FPLC, siRNA transfection and establishment of cell line.
