UK: Research Associate

College/Department: College of Arts and Science

Job title: Research Associate

Salary: £21,565-£24,273 p.a. (Grade F)

Location: Clifton campus

Closing date: 5pm on 19 December 2010

Special conditions: Fixed-term up to 15 months. Development of novel gold-antibiotic composite particles for wound care applications.

This project builds on our successful synthesis of novel gold-cefaclor (second generation beta lactam antibiotic) nanoparticles that were very successful in killing both gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Our early work has provided proof of concept for maintenance of activity, greatly enhanced longevity of the antibiotic (100% activity for more than 5 days as opposed to ca. 11% activity after 9 hours in solution that is routinely observed) and shown that the antibiotic containing nanoparticles can be affixed to surfaces. Our project generated much interest in the general press with radio and tv appearances (East Midlands today) as well as newspaper articles (the Mail online, the Metro and Chemistry Worldwide) and scientific releases ((J. Mater. Chem., (2010) 20, 6789-6798), Microbe today, Laboratory World).

Following an award of funding from the World Gold Council we are seeking a recently qualified postdoctoral researcher to extend our research in this area and to explore the following: (a) the range of molecules for which the novel synthesis method (or variants thereof) works; (b) the activity (including microbiological) of the novel composites in the laboratory; and (c) potential applications of the technology in the market place. We would also anticipate increasing our understanding, at the molecular level, of the nature of the particles that are formed, so that their activity and behaviour over time can be predicted.

The successful candidate will have a strong chemistry/ nanotechnology background and be willing to learn new techniques for characterisation and assay (including a modest amount of microbiology). The post is initially available for a period up to 15 months and is available straightaway.
