The research on functionalised surfacescentres on understanding conformation-switchable nanostructure embedded into microfluidic devices. The technology offers control of customised surface function and has applications in hydrophobic/hydrophilic switching to make valves, pumps or mixers, or to expose catalysts in microchannels.

Multiscale modelling is another key research area, aided by our growing knowledge base in computational materials design and performance prediction.

The Institute is a collaborative venture encompassing the knowledge and expertise of leading researchers and research facilities. Its aims are fully set out in its Strategic Plan 2003.

Victoria University of Wellington through the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences is the host organisation. The University of Canterbury and Industrial Research Ltd are the major partner organisations. Staff from Massey University, the University of Otago and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences also contribute.

Named after 2000 Nobel Chemistry Prize-Winner, New Zealander Alan MacDiarmid, the MacDiarmid Institute is one of seven national Centres of Research Excellence established in 2002-03. It was formed in recognition of its importance as an area of great scientific/economic potential for New Zealand. It is governed by a Board with input from an International Advisory Board of leading international researchers.

The Nanostructure Engineering, Science and Technology group (NEST) based at the University of Canterbury invites applications from well qualified graduates in Physics, Electrical Engineering, or a related subject, to carry out research towards a masters degree or PhD in nanotechnology.

The NEST group and the MacDiarmid Institute for Advanced materials and Nanotechnology (www.macdiarmid.ac.nz) has considerable research funding from the New Economy Research Fund. The programme involves collaborations with University of Otago, Victoria University of Wellington, Massey University, University of Auckland, GNS Science and Industrial Research; some projects are based at those institutions or will involve collaborative work with them. A number of studentships are available, covering tuition fees at the domestic rate and living expenses at a reasonable level.

Facilities available at the University of Canterbury include atomic force microscopy, reactive ion etching, electron beam lithography, thin film deposition, molecular beam epitaxy, electron microscopy and diffraction, optical spectroscopy, cluster preparation and characterisation and many other key technologies.

The group has strong collaborative links with many overseas institutions, providing access to some of the most well equipped laboratories in the world. Successful applicants will therefore be likely to travel overseas in the course of their studies.
