The Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) Laboratory will be open to qualified users for imaging the topography of surfaces at the sub-100 micron scale. Undergraduates and graduate students qualify by passing the Atomic Force Microscopy course in alternating D terms; occasionally graduate students can be trained starting in A term. Students typically become competent in AFM techniques in approximately one semester, although it takes about a year of constant work to evolve into a fully independent user. One should not expect research results quickly. Thus for me to train a student requires a solid commitment to the project on the part of that student's advisor.

The second annual Johns Hopkins NanoBio Symposium will be held May 1-2, 2008 at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

The Johns Hopkins NanoBio Symposium gathers experts involved in the study, training, research, development and commercialization of nanotechnology. Participants have the opportunity to hear about leading-edge technologies and recent scientific breakthroughs from experts using nanoscale solutions to solve problems in health care and medicine.

Nearly 400 people attended the 2007 NanoBio Symposium, and more than 100 posters were displayed. Due to the enthusiastic response, the 2008 event has been expanded to two days and includes a Thursday afternoon workshop with the theme “Nanotechnology for Cancer.”

On Friday morning, attendees will have the opportunity to hear talks by some of the world’s leading experts in nanobiotechnology. Friday afternoon’s poster session will feature a display of research projects representing departments from across the Johns Hopkins University, as well as from government and industrial entities.

Academic and clinical faculty, staff, students, representatives from government, business, industry, and the general public are invited to attend this enriching two-day event. Attendees also are invited to present posters, subject to INBT approval.

The Computer Science Department at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill has one of the world's best computer graphics and virtual environments research efforts. The department also enjoys a world-class reputation in medical image analysis, networking, and hardware systems design, and has significant strengths in other areas. In addition to talented faculty and researchers, every year the department attracts some of the brightest and most creative graduate students from around the world. And there are many other technology development groups within the university with similar reputations and potential.

This premier event, sponsored by the tri-service research organizations (Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), Army Research Laboratory (ARL), the Office of Naval Research (ONR), Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA) and Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), is committed to providing a fertile and stimulating forum to enable attendees to discuss opportunities afforded by recent material innovations, which maximize control of the nanostructure (nanomaterials), to impact defense and dual-use technologies.

This year’s NanoMaterials For Defense Conference focuses on nano-scale production challenges, nanoscience for photonics and magnetics, nano-enabled multifunctional structures and materials, nanoscience for autonomous responsive surfaces, and international nanotechnology programs.
