The project brings together leading academic and industrial partners, each of which has a distinct role or skill in the project. A key strength of AMBIO is the unification of these partners into a coordinated, interdisciplinary programme incorporating all the necessary research elements from polymer chemistry and nanosurface engineering technologies to biological evaluation, coatings development and end-user trials.
The AMBIO network of 31 partners (10 Universities, 15 companies, 6 research organisations) also covers the full value chain from basic science to application, development, manufacturing and commercialisation, culminating in key customers for the designated fields of application. Partners mainly from universities and research institutions will work on the development and characterisation of novel nanostructured surfaces and understanding of how they function in controlling biofouling. Industrial partners will mainly focus on the manufacturing and application of innovative products. AMBIO will effectively commercialise its developments, especially with the strong contribution of SMEs in development and manufacturing.
Twelve EU Member States are represented as well as Turkey and Israel.

The 5-year project has a total budget of € 17.9 million of which € 11.9 million is funded by the European Community, and it started on March 1st 2005.

Nanotechnology has been identified by the industry and governments globally as a priority area of research and billions of dollars have been invested in research and Development. US launched National Nanotechnology Initiative and other major economies have already addressed this important need through the creation of major European and Asian networks in nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is decidedly interdisciplinary and straddles all science and engineering disciplines. To adequately seize the enormous research opportunities that exist in this new field and to maximize the outcomes of such research for the nation, it is essential that links are fostered to allow researchers to interact across discipline boundaries. Australia has distinct nanotechnology thrusts in areas of nanoparticles, nano materials/devices, semiconductor electronics/optoelectronics, functional nanomaterials and polymers/composites.

ANN intends to bring together all the groups working in the field of Nanotechnology (physical sciences based) and related areas (e.g. microelectronics, microphotonics) in Australia. The ANN aims to substantially enhance Australias research outcomes in this important field by promoting effective collaboration and exposing researchers to alternative and complementary approaches from other fields. The Network will promote international links, create forum for students, young investigators and entrepreneurs, enhance the awareness of existing infrastructure and actively seek to enhance the nanotechnology infrastructure in the country and carry out outreach activities to enhance the public awareness of nanotechnology. In order to cover the broader areas and to create critical mass, four seed funding networks have joined together to create ANN and other networks with similar interests are most welcome to join ANN.

A consortium led by QinetiQ Nanomaterials Limited (QNL), a wholly owned QinetiQ subsidiary, is to develop a range of nanomaterials for use in the fight against a broad spectrum of viruses, it was announced today. The two year programme is being funded by the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) which has allocated £2m to the project, their largest single investment in science and technology to date.The initial concept was formulated by Dr Guogang Ren at Queen Mary's University of London who discovered that at the nanoscale, certain inorganic materials kill viruses such as SARS and avian flu on contact. Team AVNP, of which Dr Ren is a partner, will develop combinations of nanoparticles and nanocompounds for application to a range of antiviral products such as face masks, air filters and antiviral coatings, making full use of the larger surface area available at the nanoscale. The programme will optimise the effectiveness of nanomaterials and assess their toxicology for different antiviral applications. In addition Team AVNP will restructure the production processes of nanomaterials with the aim of delivering pre-production prototypes.

Key to the programme is the team's unique combination of capabilities in nanomaterials, polymers, toxicology and virology testing that are provided by QNL, Brunel University, Queen Mary's, and Retroscreen Virology Ltd. To develop the applications the Pall Corporation will provide expertise in filtration and Sun Chemical in coatings technology.

Speaking on behalf of Team AVNP, QNL founder and CTO Dr Paul Reip said: "H5N1 Bird Flu is just one of a number of viruses such as SARS that represent a genuine threat across the globe. There is a long term requirement for new and innovative antiviral materials that can be applied to products such as face masks to protect not only frontline staff such as nurses, doctors and paramedics but also the general public.

"Through its most substantial investment in science and technology to date, SEEDA has recognised the strengths of the AVNP team and the potential of nanoparticles to tackle a broad spectrum of viruses.

"The AVNP programme represents a new chapter in the ongoing story of the nanotechnology revolution. Most of the current applications of nanotechnology involve nanopowders, for example using the properties of UV absorption to give UV resistance in sunscreens. This project will exploit additional properties that materials have at the nanoscale to tackle real world crises such as pandemics."

Funding for the programme was provided under a SEEDA programme entitled "Emerging Nanomaterial Technologies in the South East Region." The programme supports new processes and materials in the new field of nanotechnology, and specifically the near to market area of nanomaterials.
