The host city of the 3rd NanoSMat conference will be - Barcelona, Spain! The event will take place during 21-24 October 2008 at the Meliá Barcelona hotel, located in the financial and commercial heart of the city.

Long description

As with the NanoSMat meetings in 2005 and 2007, NanoSMat-2008 will foster the gathering of talented people from the world for the exchange of ideas and information. The conference will thereby provide a platform for interaction between researchers, scientists and engineers from industry, research laboratories and academia, and it will feature state-of-the-art developments in all aspects of processing, characterisation and applications of nanostructured materials.

A major purpose of the NanoSMat conference is to foster collaborations among scientists, engineers, researchers and industrialists, and thus to stimulate future technological developments. There will be ample opportunity for conference delegates to network in a friendly and supportive environment.

The success of a technology becomes especially apparent when it is translated from a laboratory curiosity into economic development and wealth creation. Every endeavour will be made to stimulate and promote the discovery, development, and commercialization of advanced nanoscale materials and new applications in the evergreen field of surface and coatings technologies.

The event will also host an exhibition and offer several short educational courses relating to nano-scale and nanostructured materials.

nanoGUNE will develop the Cooperative Research Center (CIC) concept which has been successfully implemented in various cases in the Basque Country. CIC accounts for “Centro de Investigación Cooperativa”, which means Cooperative Research Center in Spanish. CICs are promoted by the Department of Industry, Trade and Tourism of the Basque Government and are designed with the aim of creating an effective framework of collaboration that strengthens interdisciplinary basic and applied world-class research in order to provide technology transfer and promote competitiveness of the Basque Industry in strategic areas.

Besides, nanoGUNE has been awarded as the first Consolider Center by the Spanish Education and Science Council. Consolider Centers are created under the Consolider-Ingenio 2010 Program which funds the highest ranked Spanish research consortiums with world-class research lines at the forefront of Science and Technology.

The main objectives of CIC nanoGUNE are the following:

* To lead, support and coordinate research and development in nanoscience and nanotechnology in the Basque Country.
* To promote technology transfer and the development of a nanotechnology-based Industry.
* To support new academia curricula and high-level training of researchers in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

The 2nd EU/FET-Cluster meeting will help to establish a critical mass of R&D at a European level and to stimulate development of an interdisciplinary community of researchers.

Long description

In order for the field of emerging nanoelectronics to continue growing exponentially worldwide and therefore lead to new commercial applications and to change the micro and nanoelectronics paradigm, it is necessary to educate new researchers who can work across traditional disciplines. High-level dissemination activities such as this 2nd EU/FET-Cluster meeting will help to establish a critical mass of R&D at a European level and to stimulate development of an interdisciplinary community of researchers.
During this meeting, an open plenary session (1 day) and restricted EU project reviews will take place.

The 1 day plenary session program will be composed of EU representatives presentations, invited talks and short contributions on IST/FET FP6 scientific research highlights and future FP7 nanoICT funded projects.

6th International Conference: Porous Semiconductors - Science and Technology (PSST-2008)

Short description

The Conference will critically analyze the state-of-the-art in the field of porous semiconductors during the two years that have passed since the PSST-2006 event. The emphasis will be kept on breakthroughs in understanding the mechanism of growth and physical properties of porous semiconductors; critical issues in their properties and emerging applications. We challenge expanding applications of porous semiconductors in natural and life science, as well as in sensing, chemical and photochemical applications.
The Conference will serve to join researchers active in physics and chemistry of semiconductors, optics, electrochemistry, analytical instrumentation, biochemistry, medicine and other related field.

Long description

The Program of the Conference will include up to 10 invited presentations, contributed oral and poster presentations. The balance of the final program will be determined by the members of the International Scientific Committee by January 20, 2008 upon evaluation of the received abstracts. Although reports on all aspects relating to porous semiconductors are welcome, particular areas of current interest include:

Our technology is based on a proprietary microfluidic platform called Flow Focusing. Flow Focusing Technology is based on a combination of specific geometry and hydrodynamic forces, making it a very versatile microfluidic system. The phenomenon is characterised by the presence of a steady micro-jet which is “sucked” through a small orifice, and breaks up into well defined droplets within the micro and nanometric range. Solidification of these particles gives rise to capsules with infinite applications. Electricity storage in nanostructured carbon
The unique combination of tunable porosity and nanosize crystallinity provides nanostructured carbon with the large surface area and conductivity needed to storage huge amounts of energy when used as a supercapacitor. Exciting results on bench-scale supercapacitor prepared with nanostructurd carbon based supercapacitors encouraged us to move the pilot scale step that we are doing in collaboration with ITE.

Enhaced gasoline production with nanostructured zeolites
Controlled mesoporosity incorporation in type Y zeolites produces a remarkable increase both in conversion and gasoline yield. These materials present enhanced hydrothermal stability due their unique combination of crystallinity and mesoporosity in one single phase. Our patented process does not modify the shape of the original zeolites crystals that expand to accomodate the introduced mesoporosity.

Nanomaterials:
Functionallized metal nanoparticles as surfactants replicas
Metal nanoparticles functionallized with cationic groups have been used as metallic replicas of conventional cationic surfactants (CTAB) used in the production of mesoporous silica. The combination of functionallized metal nanoparticles and CTAB allows for the efficient incorporation of metal nanoparticles in MCM-41

Biomimetics:
Circular mesoporous silica produced with phospholips
The combination of cationic surfactants typically used in the fabrication of mesoporous materials and biomolecules found in cell membranes produces the formation of a novel family of nanostructured materials with circular ordered esoporosity that mimic the structure of certain marine microorganisms

Medice:
Nanostructured titania for more durable orthopedic implants
Nanostructured coatings on metallic orthopedic implants accelerate osteoblast proliferation improving the adhesion between the implant and the bond. Finite element calculations have been used to prove the usefulness of ultrasonic spectroscopy to in-vivo monitor the evolution of the implant in real time.

April 2004, Sensia spun-off from the technologies developed at the Biosensor Group within the National Microelectronics Centre (CNM) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). Concluding research results and availability of biosensing systems already working at lab level originated the proposal of bringing them into commercialisation, after an initial phase of prototyping and industrialisation. This first idea was supported by Genetrix a young biotech company which is interested in developing biosensors for the characterisation and detection of molecular interactions which are relevant in human pathologies. Dr. Pedro Banda, with experience in the semiconductor industry and biosensor technologies, joined in to get in charge of the project.

The research interest of our Group is the development of a new kind of anisotropic adsorbates: tripod-shaped oligo-p-phenylenes (OPPs) substituted with oligo(ethyleneglycol)s chains (OEGs). Also, we wish to prepare self-assambled monolayers (SAMs) of these tripods where the tripods are bonded to silicon surfaces via Si-C bonds. Functional groups could be attached to the focal point of the tripods. Hence, the size of the base of the tripods controls the distance between the functional groups in the monolayers. As result of the OEG substitution on the tripod, the tripod itself and the its SAMs will be protein-resistant. This biocompatible material could be used as biosensor, to study biological samples or for example, to prepare protein microarrays.
