Cavendish Kinetics’ Nanomech-based activities are focused on the development and qualification of Non Volatile Memory technology which originated at the famous Cavendish Laboratory, Cambridge University.

Nanomech™, using standard CMOS process technology, enables the implementation of unique storage functions with ultra low-power, high speed read/write characteristics combined with an ability to continue to fully function (read and write) at temperatures up to 200°C and are completely insensitive to radiation. Compared to current technology, Nanomech storage devices offer 200x increased write performance while consuming 50x to 100x less power. The ultra low power of Nanomech™ devices is based on the ability to program them at native voltages (e.g. 1.0V for a 130nm process). These devices are fully scalable to below 45nm.

Cavendish Kinetics is an IP company; it delivers its products in the format of an IP package which is composed of the embedded process module, a set of Design IP packages and a service organization that will help install and qualify the embedded process module and supporting design IP at the customers’ fabrication facility. This combination guarantees the customer an easy integration path, full access to the combined expertise of the Cavendish team and the shortest time to market for the products that will use Cavendish Kinetics’ IP. All products are demonstrated first on an industrial qualified CMOS process.

Quantum Transport (QT) is a research group in the department of NanoScience in the Faculty of Applied Science at Delft University of Technology. We are also part of DIMES (Delft Institute for Microelectronics and Submicron Technology). The group is lead by two professors, J. E. Mooij and L. P. Kouwenhoven.

Our group studies electron transport through metal or semiconducting structures with critical dimensions of a few nanometers. The physics of electron transport in nanostructures is incredibly rich. Electrons are quantum particles that move as waves but exchange energy and momentum as particles. When electrons interact, they can condense into states such as superconductivity, charge density waves, or the quantum hall state. At the nanometer length scale, motion is described by quantum mechanics. The energy levels in the structures we study are quantized, just like atoms and molecules. To make these structures, advanced nanotechnolgy techniques are used. The quantum effects are most clearly observed if the nanostructures are cooled. To cool them down, we use dilution refrigerators that can reach temperatures of a few thousandths of a degree above absolute zero.

The mission of the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience Delft is to advance research on nanoscience, aiming at fundamental breakthoughs and novel concepts. Its research is primarily focused on the physics of nanostructures with emphasis on electronc transport phenomena in individual objects. The nanostructures vary from superconductors to biopolymers and are obtained from nature or fabricated with bottom-up methods (starting with atoms or molecules) or top-down techniques (such as electron-beam lithography). Experiments aim to explore new physics and to exploit novel principles in devices with a new functionality. In the past, groups participating in the Institute have been among the first to explore quantum point contacts, single-electron turnstiles and to measure the conductance of single carbon nanotubes. At this time the research groups at the Institute are led by Gerrit Bauer (theory), Cees Dekker (molecular biophysics, carbon nanotubes), Teun Klapwijk (physics of nano-electronic devices), Leo Kouwenhoven (quantum computation with semiconducting nanocircuits), Hans Mooij (quantum computation with superconducting nanocircuits), Yuli Nazarov (theory), Henny Zandbergen (high-resolution electron microscopy). Hans Mooij will serve as first director of the newly established Kavli Institute.

About Nanofiltration:
The nano filtration technique is mainly used for the removal of two valued ions and the larger mono valued ions like heavymetals . This technique can be seen as a coarse RO (reversed osmosis) membrane.
Because nano filtration uses less fine membranes, the feed pressure of the NF system is generally lower compared to RO systems. Also the fouling rate is lower compared to Ro systems.

Nano Specials was founded on November 1st 2005 as a buy-out from LWB Eindhoven. In 1999 LWB bought the chemical department of Philips Display Components in Eindhoven and started LWB Eindhoven. The main business was based on the development, production and sales of fluorescent powders for the cathode ray tubes (CRT) of Philips and LG Philips Displays.

All people working at Nano Specials worked in the past on the development and operations of CRT phosphors in Eindhoven. They are used to work with big volumes of inorganic powders, suspensions and dispersions. The capacity of the CRT-phosphor plant was 500 ton phosphor powder per year.

In 1995 Philips started using nanosized Antimony-TinOxide for a transparent antistatic coating on the outside of a CRT tube. They decided to develop their own nanoATO particles and started production in 1998 at the chemical department of Philips Display Components. At its peak 20 ton ATO dispersion (12%) was produced in the Netherlands (Eindhoven) and Taiwan. Until 2003 this ATO product was only used for Philips and LG Philips Displays CRT production.

In 2003 the current Director Hugo Delissen of Nano Specials and R&D manager Roel van de Belt started business development of these nanosized ATO particles beyond the CRT business.

From 1986-1996 the Phthalcon 11 product was developed at Shell in Amsterdam. The project leader was Dr Brokken. When Shell sold their Polymer division the Phthalcon 11 project was discontinued. After her retirement at Shell Dr Brokken started working at the TU Eindhoven and Dutch Polymer Institute (DPI). She is very experienced in the field of (nano)composite polymer materials and coatings. In februari 2005 entered a cooperation with LWB Eindhoven to commercialize the Phthalcon 11 product.

During 2005 the decision was made that LWB would consolidate the phosphor business. As a result Nano Specials became an independent company focusing on the production and aplication of nanoparticular materials.

The objective of NanoNed is to generate a strategic impulse for the Dutch scientific and industrial knowledge position in nanotechnology.

NanoNed will:

· Maintain and strengthen the strong nanotechnology position of the involved scientific/industrial groups in the Netherlands;

· Ensure the future availability of well trained workers for Dutch knowledge driven industry;

· Strengthen the Dutch knowledge infrastructure through a comprehensive knowledge distribution/transfer approach, leading to industrial nanotechnology applications.

To this end the consortium partners of NanoNed have formed 11 interdisciplinary Flagship programs. Each Flagship is a vehicle for national cooperation between different partners including industry, and is lead by an independent scientific leader. The Flagships and their captains are:

· Chemistry and Physics of Individual Molecules (Feringa, Groningen)

Alltogether ca. 200 research projects have been defined, which corresponds to more than 1200 man years of research.

As a part of this initiative, NanoNed initiated NanoLab NL, a national nanotechnology facility. NanoLab NL combines the existing facilities of Twente, Delft and Groningen, and carries out a targeted € 80 million re-investment program in the coming 5 years, as part of the above-mentioned NanoNed initiative. The first € 18 million phase of this program had begun under the NanoImpuls initiative. NanoLab NL coordinates the use of the facilities, tariffs, investments and the cooperation with industry, with a special emphasis on Small and Medium-sized high-tech Enterprises.

One of the aims of NanoNed is to strengthen Dutch knowledge infrastructure through a comprehensive knowledge transfer approach, leading to industrial nanotechnology applications (processes, products, services, general industrial activities). Besides, attention will be paid to societal output and the innovation proces. To this end, a Valorisation platform has been established that will play an important role in realising the valorisation targets by coaching and monitoring. Besides, users' committees are installed within each flagship.
