CRF was founded in 1976 as an Engineering Centre providing R&D services to each of the different companies within the FIAT Group.
Today, the links to FIAT Auto, IVECO, CNH and other FIAT companies remain as strong as ever. Moreover, over the last ten years, CRF has adopted a new strategy for extended collaboration, opening its doors to business with other companies and organisations which are seeking to achieve and maintain leadership in their respective fields of activity.

It is largely acknowledged that nanotechnology could be the first disruptive technology of the XXI century and that its diffusion can start a new technological revolution. Few industries will escape the effects of nanotechnology which can reshape the industrial landscape, put in jeopardy or even tilt established positions, give way to new opportunities for growth and occupation. The failure to answer their challenge can endanger the future competitive position of a great part of the economy of a country and therefore it is vital to build up at all levels a strong commitment in this field.

AIRI, the Italian Association for Industrial Research, is well aware of the risk and to live up to its mission has promoted the creation of Nanotec IT with the aim of stimulating the activity on nanotechnology in Italy and help to establish a competitive nanotechnology based national industry.

Veneto, the region in North Eastern Italy which includes Venice, is one of the most innovative areas in Europe. It has been the leader of the Italian industrial development for the last decades, with plenty of small and medium-size enterprises (SMEs) focused on exporting "smart" products and niche technologies. Moreover, Veneto universities (Padua, Venice and Verona) have excellent research units concentrated in nanotechnologies applied to materials.

That's why in 2002 the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research decided to create in Veneto a high-tech cluster on nanotechnologies applied to properties of materials: Veneto Nanotech. The cluster is funded by the central government, the regional government of Veneto and local administrations and institutions, for an expected total investment of 55-60 million Euros over 5 years.

The research at TASC is financed by means of European grants, Italian Government grants and contracts, funds from INFM and other Research National Institutions and contracts with industry.

The activity of TASC is monitored and steered by the Scientific Council of the TASC-INFM Laboratory, composed of six members who meet annually, by the Scientific Council of INFM, and by the Board of Directors (Consiglio Direttivo) of INFM.

The scientific staff of the Laboratory includes about 50 researchers (INFM and associated scientists), organized in several groups developing research programs on materials science (growth and characterization of semiconductors, two dimensional highly mobile electron gases, insulating oxides, carbon based nanostructured materials), surface and interface science (atomic structure and electron states at surfaces, surface phase transitions, plasma treatments), advanced microscopy (FEG-TEM analytical microscopy, variable temperature STM, cross-sectional STM, AFM), nanostructuring by electron, X-ray and AFM lithography, synchrotron radiation spectroscopies in the UV and soft X-ray range with variable polarisation sources.

The Synchrotron Radiation activities are developed on six beamlines that belong to the TASC-GdR (Gruppo di Ricerca) which receive photons from insertion devices and bending magnets of ELETTRA.
