NANOTEC2008 will show how nanotechnology can lead to the development of a new generation of products, devices and processes which can revolutionise sectors of great relevance. The agenda will mirror the objectives of the Strategic Programme launched by the Italian Government, Industry 2015, which focus also on themes that are at the front line at world level:

• Energy efficiency;
• Sustainable mobility;
• New technologies for life sciences;
• New technologies for Made in Italy;
• Innovative technologies to preserve the cultural heritage.

Long description

Nanotechnology, the ability to observe and manipulate matter at nanoscale, in the range between 1 and 100 nanometres, is considered one of the drivers capable of shaping the technological evolution of the XXI Century. In the past years all over the world increasing human and economical resources have been devoted to this sector. Nano-related products are already available on the market, but the full impact of nanotechnology has yet to be realised. The expectations are high.

NANOTEC2008, jointly organised by Airi/Nanotec IT, Veneto Nanotech and Regione Veneto, intends to:

• Give a comprehensive picture of nanotechnology at Italian level in relation to activity, perspectives and needs, in comparison to what happens in other countries;
• Present the latest developments and trends in terms of R&D, applications and governance at world level;
• Offer the opportunity for a debate amongst representatives of industry, public research and governmental bodies;
• Stimulate initiatives of cooperation, coordination and support aimed to promote and make more effective the efforts in this field.

• Energy efficiency;
• Sustainable mobility;
• New technologies for life sciences;
• New technologies for Made in Italy;
• Innovative technologies to preserve the cultural heritage.

A session will be specifically devoted to the responsible development of nanotechnology, crucial for the success of this technology.

The 17th International Conference on Electronic Properties of Two-Dimensional Systems (EP2DS-17) and the 13th International Conference on Modulated Semiconductor structures (MSS-13) will be jointly held at the Magazzini del Cotone in Genova, Italy, July 15 - 20, 2007.

Long description

This will be the 2007 edition of the biennial conference series that began in 1975 and are now established as the major events in the research fields of modulated semiconductors and low-dimensional electron systems. EP2DS traditionally covers the fundamental physics as well as the transport and optical properties of electronic states in low dimensional semiconductors and other mesoscopic systems.
MSS addresses the synthesis, processing and applications of modulated materials. With an initial focus on semiconductor hetero- and nanostructures, MSS now also encompasses the broader range of hybrid, modulated organic, spintronic, and biologically-based modulated structures.

The technological know-how developed by MBN consists of two complementary activities: the synthesis of nanopowders and the following manufacturing of semi-finished products using proprietary consolidation technologies.

The center consists of about 60 people, including physicists, chemists, engineers and biologists.
The activity will be complemented by the proximity X-ray lithography Beam line (LILIT) at the Synchrotron facility of Trieste.

NEST was jointly created by Scuola Normale Superiore and Istituto Nazionale per la Fisica della Materia in 2001 and absorbed the existing Laboratorio di Fisica.

The scope of the research activities spans from semiconductor/superconductor nanostructure design, growth and experimental investigation to single-molecule studies in live cells and tissues. Despite this broad scope, NEST scientists adopt a unified approach thanks to the close cultural integration of the multidisciplinary teams which is characteristic of nanoscience.

This web page provides a presentation of the main research activities and provides the technical sections of recent NEST Activity Reports. Experimental facilities are also presented with a map of the present location. NEST new home is currently being built by SNS and will be available at the end of 2006.
