When the CRANN building opens in early 2006, it will provide the physical and intellectual environment for world-class fundamental research. Special laboratories with ultra-low vibration zones will permit development of the point-probe microscopies needed to image the topography and chemistry of the nano-world. State of the art equipment will sculpt or assemble atomic and molecular building blocks. Modern research clean rooms, high precision laboratories and facilities for the 150-strong scientific and administrative staff will fill 4000 sq.m on four of the six floors. Innovative architectural design of small common spaces and meeting rooms will make CRANN a true research centre where interdisciplinary interactions arise spontaneously. Two public floors adjoining the College Millennium Entrance, used by thousands of students and commuters every day, will include a public lecture theatre, seminar rooms and display space. An innovative outreach program will be spearheaded by the Science Gallery. Offering a stimulating program of exhibitions, the Science Gallery will engage schoolchildren, students, tourists and the general public in thinking about progress in science and its place in our society.

The support is critical for academics who wish to spin out technologies from laboratories but lack expertise in business areas. Enterprise Ireland can provide funding, but equally important can provide advice and contacts to the venture capital community through their Irish based staff or their network of overseas offices. In addition, Enterprise Ireland provides grant supports to third level institutions to undertake basic research and applied, or near market research independently or in partnership with an established business.

Ireland has an active nanotechnology sector, according to Dr. Robert Flood, Senior Development Advisor at Enterprise Ireland. Dr. Flood said that the government has funnelled money into basic research through Science Foundation Ireland. The two main themes, he said, are information and communications technologies and biotechnology. He believes that nanotechnology is well suited to Ireland's research infrastructure. "It's an enabling technology that will actually straddle practically every single technological area," he said. "An application developed in a chemistry lab can equally find its way into a computer or into a novel drug delivery system".

Northern Ireland currently has a community of over 150 nanotechnology researchers based in its two major universities and industry, representing a significant block of the wider nanoscience research capability across the UK.

Nanotec NI aims to further stimulate the region's industrial and academic role in the international nanotechnology arena. The correlation between a strong research base and economic development is well recognised and the economic benefits of investment in research can clearly be seen in the work of a number of companies based in Northern Ireland.

Among these is Seagate, believed to be the largest nanotechnology employer in the UK with some 2000 staff. Seagate is a world leader in next generation magnetic recording technology and is one of over 20 Northern Ireland companies with active interests in the exploitation of nanotechnology. These companies include both indigenous high-tech start-ups and multi-nationals, with products ranging from pharmaceuticals to military systems.

Nanotec NI represents a significant step towards a coherent infrastructure for the exploitation of nanotechnology in Northern Ireland adding new equipment and new research teams to the existing local nanotechnology cadre.

The Nanotechnology Research Institute (NRI) is a new world-class research complex at the University of Ulster’s Jordanstown campus. Its purpose built facilities house some of the most sophisticated nano fabrication, manipulation and characterisation equipment in the world. It is also staffed by an internationally recognised team of researchers and academics. The NRI builds on the long pedigree of research and commercial success enjoyed by its adjoining sister building - the Northern Ireland Bioengineering Centre (NIBEC).

The NRI represents a consolidation of five advanced functional materials research groups (28 full time academics), dealing with thin film material types used in electronic, photonics, nanotechnology, sensor, MEMS, optical, environmental, magnetic and bio-materials devices and tissue engineering. The multi-disciplinary nature of the expertise at NRI makes this a unique nanotechnology centre, with strong capabilities in physics, chemistry, materials, biology and engineering, combining in a dedicated and focused collaborative environment.
