The second annual Johns Hopkins NanoBio Symposium will be held May 1-2, 2008 at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

The Johns Hopkins NanoBio Symposium gathers experts involved in the study, training, research, development and commercialization of nanotechnology. Participants have the opportunity to hear about leading-edge technologies and recent scientific breakthroughs from experts using nanoscale solutions to solve problems in health care and medicine.

Nearly 400 people attended the 2007 NanoBio Symposium, and more than 100 posters were displayed. Due to the enthusiastic response, the 2008 event has been expanded to two days and includes a Thursday afternoon workshop with the theme “Nanotechnology for Cancer.”

On Friday morning, attendees will have the opportunity to hear talks by some of the world’s leading experts in nanobiotechnology. Friday afternoon’s poster session will feature a display of research projects representing departments from across the Johns Hopkins University, as well as from government and industrial entities.

Academic and clinical faculty, staff, students, representatives from government, business, industry, and the general public are invited to attend this enriching two-day event. Attendees also are invited to present posters, subject to INBT approval.

Registration is required. JHU affiliated faculty, fellows, staff, and students may attend the symposium at NO COST. Non-JHU affiliated registrants pay a minimal fee. Registrants may also submit a poster, subject to approval by INBT.

Deadline for poster submissions is Thursday, April 17, 2008. Deadline for general registration without a poster submission is Thursday, April 24, 2008.

These markets already represent a $32 billion opportunity that is rapidly growing based on the availability of new and innovative enabling technologies. Capturing market share with attractive and sustainable returns on investment is definitely achievable.

Despite their value, current technologies have significant limitations preventing their utility in broader research and diagnostic applications where rapid, accurate and cost-effective analysis of multi parameter testing is critical. Current immunological or PCR based methods do not provide a high level of sensitivity or reproducibility and are expensive and time-consuming. Various template amplification technologies provide sensitive and reproducible analysis but are limited to analyzing up to 4 to 5 genes at a time and thereby become prohibitively expensive for monitoring larger sets of expressed biomarkers.

The convergence of recent advances in nanotechnology with modern biology and medicine has created the new research domain of nanobiotechnology. The use of nanobiotechnology in medicine is termed nanomedicine. Nanomedicine research includes the development of diagnostics for rapid monitoring, targeted cancer therapies, localized drug delivery, improved cell material interactions, scaffolds for tissue engineering, and gene delivery systems. Successful research and development in nanomedicine where ultimately patients can benefit from these new technologies require the interaction of a multitude of disciplines including material science and engineering, cellular biology and clinical translational research.

Research in the Center focuses on nanostructures made from novel materials that exhibit enhanced magneto-electronic properties. These include:

Materials with high spin polarization, especially half-metallic ferromagnets.

Materials with long carrier mean free path and spin diffusion lengths.

Heterogeneous layers that exhibit interfacial phenomena.
Multi-section quasi one-dimensional structures.

Lithographically patterned arrays of dots, antidots, nanowires, and other structures.

Nanowires with multi-functionality for chemical and biological applications.

The research effort encompasses synthesis and processing, characterization of nanostructures, measurements of properties, theoretical modeling, and prototype device fabrication and applications.

These five tightly linked components form the research basis of this MRSEC.

The JHU MRSEC also has extensive Education Outreach programs and extensive collaborations with other academic institutions, national labs, and industrial concerns.
