Nanosciences in Jyväskylä date back to the 1980s when atomic clusters became the focus of condensed matter physics. Combination with chemistry of supramolecules, biochemistry of molecular recognition and research of viruses added cross-disciplinary flavor to the research. The Nanoscience Center was founded in 2000 to strengthen the research infrastructure, industrial co-operation and education. Today Nanoscience Center operates in a new building designed for multidisciplinary research. It houses nearly 100 researchers, with a background in biology, chemistry or physics, working towards front-line scientific discoveries and applications for commercial use.

This event is aimed at scientists of all disciplines who are interested in nanoscience and nanotechnology.

Long description

This multidisciplinary, annual two-day seminar features world's leading scientists from different research areas of nanoscience and related fields. The seminar was organized for the first time in 2004 in connection with the inauguration of the Nanoscience Center (NSC) of the University of Jyväskylä.

The topics present a balanced overview of new results, emerging trends and perspectives in the nanoscience and nanotechnology. The seminar provides an interdisciplinary forum for presentation and discussion of fundamental and technological developments. Participants are encouraged to bring posters presenting their research.

The Conference will discuss global safety issues surrounding nanoparticles and nano- technologies, in occupational safety and health in particular; and will provide an insight into future actions for assuring the safety, and thereby the future success of nanotechnologies.

Long description

Main themes of the Conference
• A global view of the significance and safety of nanotechnologies, particularly in occupational environments
• Toxicity of given nanoparticles, including carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, quantum dots and photocatalytic nanoparticles, and the characterization and evaluation of the critical features of nanoparticles, the so-called ‘metrics’
• Chemical and physical characterization of selected (above) nanoparticles, and how these characteristics affect exposure assessment and its interpretation
• Views on the safety of nanoparticles in different parts of the world.

Who should attend?
Scientists and experts interested in the safety and health effects of nanoparticles; in their characterization and exposure assessment; representatives of the nanotechnology industry; employers and employee organizations: regulators at national, regional and international
levels; organizations funding nanotechnology research; and all other key-stakeholders in this area.

KSV Instruments Ltd has more than 20 years of experience in developing and manufacturing instruments for nano- and surface science research. Opportunities to present your work – submit an abstract now

The congress program will cover four areas; nanoelectronics and nanophotonics, nanotechnology instruments and tools, nanomaterials and particles, and nanobiotechnology and diagnostics. We already have leading speakers from academia and industry who will give agenda-setting talks in these areas – now we need your contribution. In 2007 we will have even more opportunities for contributed oral presentations, as well as a larger poster area. We welcome abstracts from both academic and industrial researchers.

Abstracts can be submitted online at www.nanotech.net/call.html, but act quickly – the first selection of speakers will be made after 30 November 2006.

Helsinki University of Technology is the leading institute of engineering education and research in Finland.
