Nanotech Northern Europe 2008 combines an international nanotechnology
conference, exhibition and tech transfer event in an exciting new setting in
Copenhagen, Denmark.

The call for contributions is now open. You’ll find the call topics and details about how to submit below. We’re looking for presentations of innovative research work, which fits within the focus areas of the event, and which also demonstrates an awareness of the potential applications. Submissions are welcomed from universities, research centres and companies.

The deadline for submissions is 29th February 2008. Abstracts will then be reviewed, and authors contacted by April.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory [EMBL] is an international research organisation with its main laboratory in Heidelberg [Germany], and four outstations in Hinxton, [UK] [the European Bioinformatics Institute, EBI], Grenoble [France], Hamburg [Germany], and Monterotondo [Italy].

The main laboratory in Heidelberg was inaugurated in 1978 as the first EMBL facility dedicated to basic molecular biology research, technology development, service provision and advanced training. Today more than 750 staff members are working at EMBL Heidelberg in five research units [Cell Biology and Biophysics, Developmental Biology, Gene Expression, Structural and Computational Biology and Directors' Research, covering two independent research groups headed by the Director General of EMBL and the Executive Director of EMBO], service facilities and administration.

Research at EMBL emphasizes experimental analysis at multiple levels of biological organisation, from the molecule to the organism, as well as computational biology, bioinformatics and systems biology. Research is supported by the development of enabling technologies that are made available to the scientific community in core facilities like for e.g. genomics, electron microscopy, advanced light microscopy, and proteomics. Many scientific breakthroughs have been made at EMBL Heidelberg, most notably the first systematic genetic analysis of embryonic development in the fruit fly by Christiane Nüsslein-Vollhard and Erich Wieschaus, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1995.

Outstanding training is available at multiple levels: predoctoral students, postdocs and visiting scientists are provided with exceptional training opportunities. Many courses, conferences and workshops are organised in collaboration with EMBL's sister organisation, the European Molecular Biology Organisation [EMBO]. Young scientists are trained at EMBL for a limited time before the majority of them move back to their home countries. As a result of its unique turnover policy, EMBL has become the major advanced training centre for molecular biology in Europe.

Heidelberg is the largest centre for biomedical research in Germany and home to the oldest German university, the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. Many bilateral links between scientists at EMBL and the other Heidelberg research institutions have been established. In addition to many bilateral collaborations, EMBL participates in several larger projects: the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit, a pilot project established in 2002 between the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg and EMBL; the BIOMS project in collaboration with the University of Heidelberg, the German Cancer Research Centre [DKFZ], the Max-Planck-Institute for Medical Research and the European Media Lab [EML Research]; a joint Chemical Biology Core Facility for small molecule screening that was established together with the German Cancer Research Centre [DKFZ] in 2004.

A very active Science and Society Programme and other outreach activities promote a better and broader understanding of the growing social and cultural relevance of the life sciences through a variety of activities and events where members of the scientific community, scholars from other disciplines, as well as members of the public meet to engage in a dialogue.

* Priorities for development of nanotechnology measurement tools
* Priorities for pre-normative research

Key outputs of the Nanostrand project will be roadmaps which define nanometrology research and standardisation priorities. We hope these will offer value to key stakeholders in nanometrology and standards, particularly the European Commission FP7 expert group on Nanotechnology and the CEN Technical Committee. These will be developed through wide consultation with nanotechnology experts and practitioners in industry, academia and the public sector.

WHAT IS NANOELECTRONICS?

Microelectronics has changed our world drastically: computers, mobile phones, digital television, DVD players, car navigation and security features, medical screening and health care equipment have all become essential parts of our everyday lives. Nanoelectronics is just the next evolutionary step, as the number of transistors that can be integrated on a single chip reaches one billion, but it indeed represents a revolution marking a dramatic step forward.

WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM IT?

Products with totally new capabilities will become available for general use, dreams such as intelligent cars, non-invasive health monitoring and disease prevention, homes sensitive and responsive to the needs of the persons living in it will become available to everybody., We will get better control of our health and environment, and over the quality of our food and our air, we will be able to recognise diseases even before symptoms appear, and we will be able to be fully mobile and at the same stay constantly in touch with everybody.

WHY ENIAC?

Such developments will require completely new architectural approaches to deal with the ever increasing levels of complexity required. If the primary knowledge needed for innovation, that is the development of the enabling technology for Nanoelectronics, will be built up and retained in Europe, this will result in enormous benefits to national and regional economies of the EU Member and Associated States, in terms of industrial competitiveness, employment and the resulting general wellbeing of citizens.

A fundamental condition for such knowledge-based European leadership is co-operation and interaction between all key players: European research centres, major producers of semiconductors, materials, equipment and applications, high technology small and medium-sized enterprises, national and regional authorities, universities and financial institutions.

The European Technology Platform on Nanoelectronics and its governing structure European Nanoelectronics Initiative Advisory Council (ENIAC) have the mission to bring together all these leading players to develop and implement a coherent European vision, making the best use of European talent and infrastructures to ensure European leadership in shaping our future.

The NANOS4 proposal is driven by the market need of cheap and reliable gas sensing systems, e.g. for: increased safety, comfort and economy of flying in large passenger aircrafts and in vehicles, early detection of smouldering fires, reliable and cost effective monitoring of environmental odour nuisances and workplace safety.
The sensors will be fabricated by nanoengineering techniques like vapour phase transport process crystal growth. Optical, ion and electron beam nanolithography will be a tool for selective removal of materials. The materials will be deposited as sensor arrays over micromachined semiconductor substrates with surfaces suitable for high-temperature growth of metal oxides.

The ambition of the project is to incorporate the arrays into miniaturised low-power-consumption gas sensing systems equipped with tiny micro-chambers operated in an active sampling mode as micro-reactors.

The systems will operate with power-consumption budgets comparable to a single commercial thick-film gas sensing element, featuring at the same time superior gas distinction, drift compensation as well as self-test functionalities.

The SustainPack project will extend the limits of fibre based packaging materials through the application of nanotechnologies to put the European industry at the forefront of global fibre-based packaging technology, and to provide users and consumers with more added value packaging choices based on a sustainable resource. The SustainPack project will overcome the challenges of commercialisation of new technologies by:

* identifying what the market actually needs from fibre-based packaging
* conducting applied research directed towards delivering fibre-based packaging solutions that address these market needs
* delivering demonstration projects that prove the technical and commercial viability of the technologies

Project structure

SustainPack is a pull-driven project, focusing on customer and downstream supply chain needs in order to identify and prioritise research requirements and to integrate other key themes such as sustainability, European competitiveness, legislation and policy. The work programme for SustainPack is structured around a series of six Sub-Projects:

* Sub-Project 1 will determine the market needs and therefore provide direction for the applied research projects. Success of SustainPack will be confirmed through a series of demonstration projects with industry partners delivering commercially and technically viable nanotechnology packaging solutions
* Sub-Project 2 will involve the establishment of a nanofacility for the production of cellulose and mineral based nanostructures for use in other research Sub-Projects. The sub-project will deliver lean and effective fibre based materials
* Sub-Project 3 will develop renewable composite films, incorporating fibres materials and renewable plastics, to compete with synthetic polymers
* Sub-Project 4 will develop coating and printing technologies to enhance barriers and other functional properties
* Sub-Project 5 will develop fibre based 3-D composite packaging solutions
* Sub-Project 6 will develop one and two way communicative packaging.

3. FP7 Brokerage Event, March 21st, Dublin – NanoMicroClub
Venue: Enterprise Ireland Conference Theatre (Glasnevin, Dublin 9). 10.00 - 16.30.

ENTA and Enterprise Ireland will provide an FP7 NanoMicro brokerage event on the 21st of March for industrial and academic researchers seeking project opportunities and partners. A total of EUR 3.5 billion has been earmarked for the NMP Programme over the duration of FP7 and the ICT Programme budget is EUR 9.0 billion. There are also NanoMicro opportunities under other programmes such as health, energy and food.

The day will consist of presentations to 1) to introduce Irish participants into proposals; 2) link companies into FP7 proposals led by Irish coordinators.

Presentations will be given by a variety of organizations including Intel, Enterprise Ireland and successful participants in FP6.

The European Federation of Biophysics is structured so as to avoid the pitfalls of profit motivation, biased promotion of a selected competing product, inadequate scientific backing, and unwarranted protection of entrenched political or medical interests. It functions as a network of collegial individuals extending from basic physicists, self-trained highly creative thinkers, experts in both traditional and alternative healing arts, engineers, and suppliers of various products and devices.

To encourage this free flow of information, faculty members are fully committed to neither disclose or to commercially use information received in confidence from another member. Rather, the intent is to establish cooperative group relationships with individuals pursuing similar goals and to use the collective wisdom and expertise of such groups to inform and guide the pursuits of other faculty members.

Recognition by fellow faculty members of one's scientific accomplishments and one's commitment to the overall mission of the Institute is to be highly valued. Future faculty appointments will be made upon the unanimous approval of those faculty members with related interests and expertise.

Departments will be organized around central themes with regular reporting of progress and requests for problem solving assistance. By working together, many of the obstacles commonly encountered by researchers pursuing controversial topics can be overcome.

Moreover, valuable clinical observations using energy-based therapies can be subjected to formal clinical trials leading to licensure and more open and widespread usage. An integrated approach will achieve far more than the sum of separate individual efforts. While the Institute will clearly be prosperous for its members, the real beneficiary will be the vast number of patients who are currently inappropriately served by conventional medicine.

The Institute will use its resources to foster research endeavors of its members and to provide a measure of financial security to those who have been willing to freely contribute their expertise and passion in a collaborative endeavor. Resources will also be used to provide educational materials on the Foundation's web site, prepare major grant applications, and to encourage financial and other donations from members of the public who wish to become supporters.

The integrated project PACE will explore the utilization of the simplest technically feasible elementary living units (artificial cells much simpler than current cells) to build evolvable complex information systems. We will create, analyse and investigate the applications of such systems that process information by self-organization starting at molecular scales. We will also determine whether life-like properties are necessary for computational systems to be fully robust and adaptive and investigate the tension between evolvable living autonomy and programmable utilization.. We will explore the collective properties of artificial cells and demonstrate that they are the right material for building nanoscale robot ecologies. The particular molecular systems we will consider will have genetically controlled catalytic reactions, self-assembly of complex supramolecular structures, and energy transduction. We will investigate the stepwise evolution of such complex systems by machine complementation and combinatorial search using a programmable microfluidic interface. We will provide theoretical and simulation frameworks for understanding emergent computational properties of such systems, and experimental frameworks for programming them by evolutionary exploration of chemical reactions. We will integrate and disseminate multidisciplinary European activities to give it a decisive international competitive advantage in this FET.

The overall aim of this Co-ordination Action is both, firstly, to anticipate the societal and ethical issues likely to arise as nanobiotechnologies develop and, secondly, to use the lessons from the European GM debate to respond pro-actively and responsibly to the probable public, media and political concerns.

This is an interdisciplinary ethics research and communication project with the objectives to:

* bring together the key relevant players in the field including committed ethicists, social scientists, nanobiotechnologists, communication specialists, SMEs and major companies using nanobiotechnology,
* horizon-scan for the scientific and commercial developments likely to cause public and political concern
* clarify the ethical issues involved or as they arise, and recommend and carry out strategies for public communication to address the emerging questions
* take on board the experiences and lessons learned from the European GM debate of the last decade and apply them with this project to the nanobiotechnology discussions
* incorporate the recommendations of the European Commission’s Communication “Towards a European Strategy for Nanotechnology” and the results of its Nanoforum public consultation which surveyed European public opinion on these issues
* prepare for the relevant actions in the European Commission’s Action Plan for Nanotechnology to be published in Spring 2005 and the Technology Platform on Nanotechnology foreseen in its Seventh Framework Programme commencing in 2006

SINANO’s activities, with long-term and multidisciplinary objectives, could herald a revolution in IC technology, involving integration of nanoscale CMOS and emerging post-CMOS logic and memory devices.

SINANO will work to enhance device performance and integration, to meet the ever increasing demands of communications and computing. The network includes partners with expertise required in developping these advanced devices, from basic materials science through design and fabrication to characterisation and device modelling.

SINANO is a Network of Excellence funded by the European Commission under the 6th Framework Programme (EC Contract n°506844) and belongs to the Information Society Technologies programme (IST). It lasts from January 1st, 2004 to December 31st, 2006.

The NEURONANO network major aim is to integrate carbon nanotubes (CNT) with multielectrode array (MEA) technology to develop a new generation biochips to help repair damaged central nervous system (CNS) tissues.

The impact of carbon nanotubes on multielectrode array (MEA) technology and therefore on neuro-implant technology represents an advanced goal on CNS Nanoengineering. The carbon nanotubes functionalized with neuronal networks is the key of NEURONANO project.

The specific interest is in understanding how the components underlying electrical activity are organized when implemented with conductive substrates, and how this organization changes in the presence of molecular cues or chronic stimulations.
