The Institute is a collaborative venture encompassing the knowledge and expertise of leading researchers and research facilities. Its aims are fully set out in its Strategic Plan 2003.

Victoria University of Wellington through the School of Chemical and Physical Sciences is the host organisation. The University of Canterbury and Industrial Research Ltd are the major partner organisations. Staff from Massey University, the University of Otago and the Institute for Geological and Nuclear Sciences also contribute.

Named after 2000 Nobel Chemistry Prize-Winner, New Zealander Alan MacDiarmid, the MacDiarmid Institute is one of seven national Centres of Research Excellence established in 2002-03. It was formed in recognition of its importance as an area of great scientific/economic potential for New Zealand. It is governed by a Board with input from an International Advisory Board of leading international researchers.
