NanoScape develops and produces a range of porous, crystalline nanosized materials on an aluminosilicate basis, known as NanoZeolites.
These materials are employed as moisture adsorbers, selective filters, catalysts or dye carriers.
In powder form they can be employed as additives for coating formulations or polymers.
NanoScape also also developed a range of composites incorporating NanoZeolite particles: ZeoGlue, ZeoGel, ZeoPaste and ZeoCoat (moisture adsorbers); and ZeoCol (encapsulated dyes).
These materials find application in MEMS, OLED, PV and pharmaceutical packaging, aswell as in heat recovery /(exchanger) systems, filters/membranes and coating systems.

CeNS, the Center for NanoScience at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, was founded to invest in this future. CeNS aims at interdisciplinary research on objects artificially tailored on the nanometer scale - new tools to support a future nanotechnology. Furthermore, it offers a wide educational program. The University of Munich with its large science base offers ideal conditions for such research activities. The synergetic interaction between different departments makes up CeNS: the emergence into the Nanoworld.
CeNSational Expertise

CeNS was initiated and established in 1998 by one theoretical and five experimental groups at the Department of Physics at the LMU and formally started its activities in the beginning of 1999. The expertise of the founding members covers the areas of:

photonics and optoelectronics (Prof. Jochen Feldmann)

biophysics on the nanometer scale (Prof. Hermann Gaub)

scanning probe analysis and nano-optics (Prof. Khaled Karrai)

nanometer semiconductor physics and devices (Prof. Jörg P. Kotthaus)

Institute for experimental physics biophysics and soft condensed matter physics (Prof. Joachim Rädler)

CeNS currently combines the activities of almost 200 highly motivated researchers and shares access to a manifold of scientific expertise and facilities.

These include laser laboratories for optical studies with the highest temporal and spatial resolution available, a broad range of scanning probe instruments for spatially resolved studies of structural, mechanical, electronic, and optical properties on the nanometer scale and advanced tools employing X-ray and neutron diffraction to study nanometer structures. Electronic properties of nanometer devices are investigated in a wide range of frequencies from radio waves through the infrared to optical frequencies. Patterning tools in a clean room include optical lithography, electron beam lithography, and scanning probe lithography with a large variety of etching and deposition technologies to produce specially designed patterns down to a few nanometers. New chemistry laboratories allow polymer films, self-assembled organic films and cell cultures to be prepared for interdisciplinary studies

Integrated BioDiagnostics (ibidi) is a biotechnology company from Munich. ibidi is developing a brand new technology to simplify and accelerate analysis of biological samples.

In the 'Lab-on-a-Slide' system, different steps are integrated on one slide for preparation and analysis. This allows for analysis to be automated, standardized and run in parallel.

The design of the Lab-on-a-Slide systems is extremely flexible. Combined with the high optical quality of the used thermoplastics, this makes our slides a new platform technology for optical readouts.

The application profile includes usage in biological laboratories as well as clinical diagnostics and the identification of single molecules.

ibidi's main goal is to make laboratory work and routine diagnostics easier, more secure and more efficient.

For the first time the mechanistic course of events during the entry of the viruses into a cell such as membrane penetration, diffusion and active transport in the cytoplasm or penetration of the nuclear envelope can be visualized live and in detail. The resulting data can help to improve specific development and screening of new antiviral substances.

The study of individual molecules allows one to look beyond ensemble-averaged properties, thus revealing details of the molecular behavior which are otherwise hidden by spatial, spectral and temporal averaging in ensemble measurements. Optical switches on the bases of single molecules have been developped and molecular machines in nanoporous cages are under investigation. A further topic is Single Virus Tracing, a novel single molecule sensitive technique for the investigation of biological processes on the molecular level. Newest results forming a detailed picture of the processes involved in the uptake of a virus in a living cell could be observed. This is of relevance to an understanding of the pathogenic mechanisms of a virus infection. In addition single virus tracing experiments can be applied to both improvement of virus-mediated gene delivery in living cells (e.g. gene therapy) and development of antiviral drugs.
