The development of nanotechnology in Taiwan is still in the initial research stage. Dr.Tom Lee,graduated from Department of Mining,Metallurgy,and Materials in NCKU, formed a strong R&D center consisting of Ph.D.s and integrated a manufacturing team that has the ability to mass-produce superior-quality nano raw materials. In 2003, we were founded with the goal of leading Taiwan to become the leader of nanotechnology research in the world.
Dr. Lee is our technical director. He has already accumulated many years of experience on the research of nanotechnology and has been proudly awarded with many domestic and foreign patents (e.g. U.S.No5, 244580, U.S.No5, 2441, 323, Invention No.56086, 57199, 65557, and 65654). Our company's aim is to develop and deliver products that offer a compelling advantage over that of traditional products for our customers and strategic partners. Currently, many composite raw materials and products, including nano composite pastes, nano composite powders, nano composite master batch and nano commodity applications, are already on the market. The Powder Science Lab. which was established in 1976 is the predecessor of the research center in National Cheng Kung University. The research field is expanded from the research group of alumina ceramics which focus in theory of micro-processing and in techniques integration. In a prerequisite of foresight, energy saving, and low pollution, the aims of the center are engaged in the generation, synthesis, and re-use after usage/ recycling of nano-sized oxide powders. Moreover, the center devoted to explore the properties and techniques related new function development of particulates system. The research center attends to last and integrate the past achievements to set up a research platform of nano-sized raw powders/ materials for Taiwan. Also, the center predict that the league between commerce and academia and national corporation will be established through kinds of key results, and hope to promote the capability for researching and production of industries in Taiwan to attain the lasting development forever in industries and economics.

The formation theory of α-Al2O3 crystallites was accomplished in 2002 by the research center, so it occupied the first position in the world at the preparation of nano-sized α-Al2O3 crystallites (50~100 nm). However, this research center is the only one organization who can produce nano-sized α-Al2O3 powders (＜100 nm) and has the ability to offer such powders in units of kilogram now. The phenomena of the phase transformation of nano-sized powders, topotatic reaction and the solid state reaction of particles have been studied to synthesize nano-sized particles by some members of the last generation of this research center. These works have the advantages of low energy consumption and low pollution. γ-Fe2O3, α-Fe2O3, ZrO2, TiO2, PZT, ferrite (Fe-Zn, Ni-Zn, Li-Zn), BaTiO3, ZnTiO3 and ZTA (Zirconia toughened alumina) powders are all the objects in this research.

This center will be diligent to set up a technological platform based on the theory, and then (1) discover the formation mechanisms of nano-sized powders, (2) prepare nano-sized powders based on the formation mechanism, (3) discuss the properties of nano-sized powders and (4) modified the properties of the powders directly or indirectly; utilize the properties to develop industrial powders with nano-sized of the prospect and innovation.

The center has a show room of about 1080 square feet; it shows the products of each nanotechnology product invented in school or off campus. There are three Laboratories at the center: the Nanomaterial Laboratory, Nanobiomedical Laboratory and Nanoelectronic Laboratory. They relate to research/development of new materials, biomedicine and light and display and energy respectively.

The core nanotechnology includes: grinding technology, nanocomposites, surface engineering, CNT-FEL/D, biosensor and biomedicine etc.
Multimedia was used to exhibit the research/development results of nanotechnology products. It helps teachers, students and other visitors to understand this technology. Various seminars (domestic and international), forums on nanotechnology industry, workshops on nanotechnology and camps of nanotechnology for primary and high schools all took place on campus.

The center provides measurement services in nanoscale for school and off campus. This interaction service of various nanotechnologies is very welcomed by the experts in Taiwan. Feng Chia University is focusing on integrating talents in nanotechnology and micro-electro-mechanical, and developing prospects and innovative researches as well as cooperating with the industries/authorities/academia and talents cultivation etc.

Nano-Architect Research Corporation (NARC) was established in May of 1998. It is located at the legendary Hsinchu Science Park - the concentrate of Taiwan's high-tech research and manufacturing site. Also can be found in Hsinchu Science Park are world-famous IC foundries -- TSMC and UMC; top universities - National Tsing-Hua University and Chiao-Tung University; central government affiliated research labs including ITRI, Nano-Device Laboratory (NDL), Synchrotron Radiation Research Center, Precision Instruments Research Center, Super Computing Center and Space Research Center.
