Innovative Mode For Achieving Super-Fast Speeds In Andor Technology’s Scientific Cameras

Innovative Mode For Achieving Super-Fast Speeds In Andor Technology’s Scientific Cameras

Article body

Belfast, Northern Ireland, 31 July 2008 – Today Andor Technology plc (Andor), a world leader in scientific imaging and spectroscopy solutions, announces the implementation of the ‘Cropped Sensor’ Mode as a standard, user-selectable feature with its iXon+, Newton and iKon range of high-performance EMCCD and CCD cameras. This highly flexible and specialized readout mode is capable of achieving extremely fast continuous frame rates (typically sub-millisecond exposures) of either images or spectra.

In this mode, the user defines through software a ‘sub-array’ from within the full sensor area, such that it encompasses the region of the image where light is actually falling and change is rapidly occurring, e.g. a trapped Bose Einstein condensate, a ‘calcium spark’ within a living cell, or a dispersed spectral signature. The sensor subsequently “imagines” that it is of this smaller defined array size, achieved through specially optimized readout patterns, and reads out at a proportionally faster frame rate. The smaller the defined array size, the faster the frame rate achievable.

Cropped Sensor Mode has the end result of achieving much faster sustainable speeds than those obtainable in a conventional ‘sub-array’ / ROI readout mode. Combined with EMCCDs, this mode also offers potential for replacement of PMT or APD detectors with a higher sensitivity alternative.

Dr Colin Coates, Market Development Manager within Andor Technology, said ‘The addition of the Cropped Sensor Mode to our existing camera families brings a useful functionality: the ability to dramatically boost speed by defining a sub region in situations where only part of the sensor is accepting light is central to some exciting areas of research, such as the field of super-resolution nanoscopy’.

For more information, please visit www.andor.com/cropped_sensors, or email press@andor.com.

BudgetSensors® introduces All-In-One AFM Probes

Sofia, Bulgaria – 29th July 2008

BudgetSensors®, a Bulgarian manufacturer of silicon and silicon nitride probes, as well as AFM accessories for Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM), announces the commercial introduction of the “All-In-One AFM Probe” - a versatile silicon AFM probe with 4 different cantilevers on a single holder chip.

All-In-One AFM probes (Order Code: AIO and AIOAl) feature cantilevers for Tapping Mode, Soft Tapping Mode, Force Modulation and Contact Mode on one and the same holder chip.
They are made of monolithic silicon and offer excellent uniformity and reliable performance.

The main advantage of this product compared to regular, single-cantilever AFM probes is the freedom to choose in the very last moment the right cantilever for each application.
AFM users don’t need to stock various AFM Probe types any more. Nevertheless, this product is not meant as a substitution to comparable single-cantilever АFM probes, because the geometry of each one of the All-In-One cantilevers differs from the geometry of comparable specialized single-cantilever AFM probes.

All-In-One AFM Probes are offered without any coatings (Order Code: AIO) and with an aluminium reflex coating on the back side of the cantilever (Order Code: AIOAl).

For detailed product specifications, please visit www.budgetsensors.com/all_in_one.html.

More new products, which are under development in BudgetSensors’ R&D centre, will be released soon.

Sofia, Bulgaria – 26th May 2008

As a response to the increased demand for affordable high-quality AFM calibration standards, BudgetSensors®, a Bulgarian manufacturer of silicon and silicon nitride probes, as well as AFM accessories for Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM), announces the commercial introduction of 2 different AFM height calibration standards – the HS-100MG and the HS-20MG.

Both height calibration standards feature silicon dioxide structure arrays on a 5x5mm silicon chip. The fabrication process guarantees excellent uniformity of the structures across the chip. This in turn ensures easy and reliable Z-axis calibration of any AFM system.

Arrays of structures with different shape and pitch are integrated on each chip.
Aside from Z-axis calibration, this design also allows X- and Y-axis calibration for bigger scanners (40-100µm range).

The HS-100MG features structures with 100nm and the HS-20MG features structures with 20nm step height.

SAN DIMAS, CA – May 22, 2008 – Organic and inorganic contaminants of precision devices such as flat panel displays, MEMS device and patterned semiconductors are often difficult to detect. Many contaminant materials are essentially invisible to common analytical techniques such as optical microscopy. CRAIC Technologies, Inc, a global leader in application-focused microanalysis solutions, provides the capability to both detect and analyze trace contaminants with a single instrument. This is done by combining both ultraviolet microscopy with ultraviolet microspectroscopy in the CRAIC Technologies QDI 2010™ microspectrophotometer equipped with the optional QDI ImageUV™ package.
Many organic and inorganic materials absorb light in the ultraviolet region but are invisible to the naked eye. This means that standard optical microscopy will not be able to detect these contaminants and has no other means of analyzing them. While other techniques are available, they require extensive sample preparation and can damage the sample. By utilizing ultraviolet micro-imaging, the user is able to quickly, easily and non-destructively locate many contaminants. UV microspectroscopy can then be performed to measure the electronic spectral characteristics of the contaminant in order to identify it. The spectra can also be used to further improve the clarity of the image of the contaminants by determining the wavelength of maximum absorbance. By combining both techniques in a single instrument, the QDI 2010™ microspectrophotometer, the user is easily able to locate and identify contaminant materials on flat panel displays, semiconductor chips, MEMS and even microfluidic devices. The QDI 2010™ microspectrophotometer is the first system ever to combine both UV microscopy and microspectroscopy in a single tool. It can also be upgraded to enable ultraviolet, visible and near infrared reflectance, transmittance and fluorescence microscopy and microspectroscopy.
For more information about the QDI 2010™ Microspectrophotometer and contamination detection by UV microscopy, visit www.microspectra.com.

About CRAIC Technologies: CRAIC Technologies, Inc. is a global technology leader focused micro imaging and microspectroscopy in the ultraviolet, visible and near-infrared regions. CRAIC Technologies creates innovative solutions, with the very best in customer support, by listening to our customers and implementing solutions that integrate operational excellence and technology expertise. CRAIC Technologies provides solutions for customers in forensic sciences, health sciences, semiconductor, geology, nanotechnology and materials science markets whose applications demand accuracy, precision, speed and the best in customer support.

NANOSENSORS™ introduces AdvancedTEC AFM Probes with Gold and Platinum Coating

Short description

NANOSENSORS™ today announced the introduction of new Gold and Platinum coated variations of its well-known speciality probe type for Atomic Force Microscopy - the AdvancedTEC™ SPM probe.

Article body

Neuchâtel/Switzerland, May 19th 2008. NANOSENSORS™ today announced the introduction of new Gold and Platinum coated variations of its well-known speciality probe type for Atomic Force Microscopy - the AdvancedTEC™ SPM probe.

The Platinum Iridium and the gold coated AdvancedTEC™ AFM probes will be available in different force constants and resonant frequencies for contact mode, non-contact/tapping mode and force modulation mode measurements.

These new variations extend the range of applications for the AdvancedTEC to Electrostatic Force Mode (EFM), Scanning ElectroChemical Microscopy (SECM), Scanning Capacitance Mode (SCM), Scanning Kelvin Probe Microscopy (SKPM) as well as to usage in combined imaging techniques such as: Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) – Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) imaging, Infra Red – Scanning Nearfield Optical Microscopy (IR-SNOM) or Electrical Micro-Nanprober systems.

The gold coated AdvancedTEC™ is especially interesting for applications in the fields of Biology and Life Sciences like Force Spectroscopy, Binding Force Spectroscopy (Pull-off measurements) and chemical spectroscopy.

The general advantage of the AdvancedTEC is that this highly doped monolithic silicon probe is designed for precise positioning and high resolution imaging. It features a rectangular cantilever with a triangular free end and a tetrahedral tip that protrudes from the very end of the cantilever. This unique feature allows precise positioning and makes the AdvancedTEC™ the only scanning probe in the world that offers real tip visibility through the optical system of the Atomic Force Microscope – even when the probe is slightly tilted due to its mounting. This makes it the premium choice for all applications where the tip has to be visible (e.g. nanomanipulation). The AdvancedTEC™ Tip is defined by real crystal planes which results in highly reproducible geometries and extremely smooth surfaces. Due to its very small half cone angles this new tip also shows great performance on samples that have a small pattern size combined with steep side walls.

The AdvancedTEC™ is especially interesting for all applications where a direct optical access from top or from the side is necessary in order to be able to illuminate the AFM probe, the AFM tip or the sample simultaneously with the measurement with a laser, electron beam etc.

About NANOSENSORS™:

Since more than 15 years researchers world-wide rely on the guaranteed high quality of NANOSENSORS™ probes for Atomic Force Microscopy and Scanning Probe Microscopy.

NT-MDT and Nano & Giga Solutions sign an agreement for development of an educational web portal in nanotechnology

Nanotechnology being defined as “a field of applied science and technology whose unifying theme is the control [and fabrication] of matter on the atomic and molecular scale” (see wikipedia and other internet resources) is quickly expanding its area from science savvy geeks and gurus to the general publics attention. For future generations of engineers, fundamental knowledge of atomic scale materials structure and design will be critical to be competitive as an engineering professional. Meanwhile high school science curriculum in many countries are behind the technology curve and students are missing out due to lack of resources.

NT-MDT has joined and supported an initiative of Anatoli Korkin, President of Nano & Giga Solutions in developing an informative and entertaining educational web portal, which is dedicated to enhance public knowledge in all aspect of “atomistics” from inorganic materials to bio molecules and demonstrate how new phenomena appear from different combinations of chemically bound atoms as their number and variety increases. Combining some of the ideas of poplar web portals, such as Wikipedia and MySpace, ASDN invites scientists, teachers and students to develop their pages on their favorite subjects in atomic scale science and nanotechnology. Expressing personalities and humor are welcome and encouraged on this very informal web site.

NT-MDT will participate in the Spring 2008 ACS National Meeting & Exposition in New Orleans, LA, USA, April 6th to10th . During the ACS exhibition, NT-MDT will debut their newest product innovation the Solver Next, the first general-purpose SPM automated for ease-of-use at any user level. The system offers complete automation, intelligent software and ergonomic design making this general-purpose SPM acceptable for state-of-the-art scientific laboratories and multi user facilities.

The essential features of the Solver NEXT are its two built-in SPM measuring heads for AFM and STM operation. The system automation removes the need for manual setup of the measuring head and adjustment of laser feedback. As an option, additional manually inserted measuring heads are available for experiments in liquid or nanoindentation measurements. The System has closed-loop sensors to compensate for inherent piezoelectric imperfections such as scan nonlinearity, creep and hysteresis. The sample can be heated up to 150 oС. The video monitoring system enables high resolution, motorized focusing, and continuous zooming. Selection of the scan area is motorized as well. The sample positioning is tied in with the movement of video monitoring system thus automatically bringing the chosen sample area to the SPM measurement area. The Solver Next has an advanced controller with library of scripts and MAC OS compatibility for versatility to meet the many challenges of scientific research.
Training Scanning Probe Microscope for Mac OS (Apple) users

Early in February ‘08 NT-MDT company promoted a training SPM NanoEducator compatible with Mac OS. NT-MDT is the first company who introduced the world of SPM nanoinvestigations to Mac OS users.

Early in February ‘08 NT-MDT company promoted a training SPM NanoEducator http://www.ntmdt.com/Products/Scanning_Probe_Microscopes/product79.html compatible with Mac OS. NT-MDT is the first company who introduced the world of SPM nanoinvestigations to Mac OS users.
Single-step method settings, facile replacement of samples and user-friendly interface are the essential adjectives of a device for the research and educational process which have been replenished with Mac OS compatibility feature now.
Moreover, optical and mechanical parts of the device have been developed considerably. One can choose the most interesting regions to investigate by means of a video camera which allows to “stroll over the surface”. Details of the video picture can be emphasized in different ways owing to changeable backlight angle. Furthermore, focusing control of the video camera permits to avoid the probe damage by following the approach process more thoroughly.
NT-MDT company supplies multifunctional nanolaboratories NTEGRA and sophisticated nanotechnological facilities NanoFab to the market but focuses its attention on the development of instrumental basis for the nanoeducation now as before. Together with upgrade of the NanoEducator device its capabilities are available for the staunch supporters of Macintosh platform.

Last summer SPECIM visited NIR 2007 in Umeå Sweden, and presented its high performance NIR Hyperspectral imaging technology. We had the chance to meet many new people from the NIR world, and get valuable insight from the chemical imaging community.

For many years, SPECIM has created a standard in the hyperspectral imaging industry, by providing high quality products, with superior performance, being cost-effective. Attributes which would be muted, without a very detailed understanding of how end-users will interact with our products. During NIR 2007, this point became even more evident as visitors continued to emphasize the importance of a technically superior instrument, with usability as a clear and cut design goal.
With this target clearly in mind, SPECIM has spent the last 8 months completing the latest addition to the SPECIM hyperspectral imaging product line, SisuCHEMA. SisuCHEMA is a completely integrated Hyperspectral Chemical Imaging Workstation, which will be officially launched during the Analytica trade fair, held in Munich, Germany, April 1-4 2008. We would like to invite you to visit us at Analytica for a demonstration of this innovative new product at booth 117 in Hall A2, where we will be jointly presenting SisuCHEMA with our German distributor, L.O.T. Oriel.
As a service to our customers, SPECIM is offering free entrance tickets to Analytica. To receive your complementary entrance ticket, please send your contact details to info@specim.fi being sure to write "Analytica" in the subject line of your message.

For more information about SisuCHEMA, please visit our website.
