The Nano-Net conference positions itself at the intersection of two worlds, namely, emerging nano-technologies on one-side, and network/communication theory on the other side. The standing question that this conference will address is: What are the new communication paradigms that derive from the transition from micro- to nano-scale devices? The related degrees of freedom and constraints associated with these new technologies will change our notions about efficient network and system design. Nano-Net provides a multi-disciplinary forum for the discussion of new techniques in modeling, design, simulation, and fabrication of network and communication systems at the nano-scale.

ALIO Industries began in 2001 with an idea to create “a better way” to meet the nano and micron precision robotic needs of the 21st century. This initial idea has grown into an ever-expanding product line that includes Hexapod robotic systems, air bearing systems and mechanical bearing linear and rotary nano-precision systems for atmospheric, clean room and ultra high vacuum chambers.

ALIO, (which is Latin for “A better way.”) is an innovator in nano technology motion systems. ALIO’s designs exceed current standards of precision product designs for automation technology. Holding two patents for the Parallel 6 Axis Hexapod and the Parallel 3 Axis Tripod, ALIO has set the pace for nano precision design.

ALIO’s linear and rotary stage lines were designed to be cost effective and complement the market demand for high resolution, nano precision motion. These applications can be used in normal atmospheric environments, clean rooms, and vacuum chamber environments. ALIO’s design of the rotary stages can be utilized for stand-alone motion or stackable for various serial kinematic structures.

ALIO has also developed a series of standard and custom high-resolution air bearing stages for nano-precision applications. These robust stages offer the same 5-nanometer resolution capabilities as our standard products with high stiffness and speeds from1 micron/sec to over 1 m/sec depending onapplication needs. These air-bearing stages are well suited when smooth, precise motion is required for advacned FPD and Semiconductor metrology, process and repair.

About the Nanowalker project:
In actual nanotechnology applications the small sample that is to be manipulated or observed is brought to the - usually - big and bulky machine which will perform the desired task: this is usually done by a user, and requires long times in term of preparation and operation, thus limits drastically the throughput of the process.

The core idea behind the NanoWalker project of the NanoRobotics Laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal (EPM), in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is to break with tradition. From now on, the instruments are to be brought to the samples in the form of miniature wireless instrumented robots called "NanoWalkers". With the NanoWalker robot approach, instrumentations and throughput requirements can be adjusted extremely fast by simply adding, replacing, or removing robots at will.

The laboratory's team has set its objective to develop the first version of this NanoWalker robot. With approximative dimensions of 30mm x 30mm, it will be equipped with a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) to help it in its conquest of the infinitely small.

Many new nanotechnology research fields require a high degree of precision in both observing and manipulating materials at the atomic level. The advanced nanorobotics technology needed to manipulate materials at this scale, a million times smaller than a grain of sand, is being developed in the new Sheffield NANOLAB.

The integration of different technologies to act as simultaneous real-time nanoscale `eyes´ and `hands´, including the advanced nanorobotics, high-resolution ion/electron microscopy, image processing/vision control and sophisticated sensors, will be the key to realising such nanomanipulation.

The NANOLAB programme will thus allow unique experiments to be carried out on the manipulation and observation of the smallest quantities of materials, including research into nanoscale electronic, magnetic and electromechanical devices, manipulation of fullerenes and nanoparticles, nanoscale friction and wear, biomaterials, and systems for carrying out quantum information processing.
