The facility includes a 4,000 square foot cleanroom, three thin film labs, and a photo reduction darkroom. The Nanofab is managed by the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) and occupies space in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department in Hamerschlag Hall and in the College of Engineering building, Roberts Hall.
The facility was constructed by the university to support the wide variety of thin film and solid state electronics research conducted primarily by the DSSC and the ECE department. Research requiring the use of the facility is inherently multidisciplinary. Faculty, staff, and students access the labs and collaborate on projects originating from the DSSC, ECE, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Robotics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and industry. Areas of research include process development of magnetic recording and magneto optic recording thin films and device structures, microelectromechanical systems, semiconductor materials and quantum structures, and integrated electro-optics.

Energy:
Electricity storage in nanostructured carbon
The unique combination of tunable porosity and nanosize crystallinity provides nanostructured carbon with the large surface area and conductivity needed to storage huge amounts of energy when used as a supercapacitor. Exciting results on bench-scale supercapacitor prepared with nanostructurd carbon based supercapacitors encouraged us to move the pilot scale step that we are doing in collaboration with ITE.

Enhaced gasoline production with nanostructured zeolites
Controlled mesoporosity incorporation in type Y zeolites produces a remarkable increase both in conversion and gasoline yield. These materials present enhanced hydrothermal stability due their unique combination of crystallinity and mesoporosity in one single phase. Our patented process does not modify the shape of the original zeolites crystals that expand to accomodate the introduced mesoporosity.

Nanomaterials:
Functionallized metal nanoparticles as surfactants replicas
Metal nanoparticles functionallized with cationic groups have been used as metallic replicas of conventional cationic surfactants (CTAB) used in the production of mesoporous silica. The combination of functionallized metal nanoparticles and CTAB allows for the efficient incorporation of metal nanoparticles in MCM-41

Biomimetics:
Circular mesoporous silica produced with phospholips
The combination of cationic surfactants typically used in the fabrication of mesoporous materials and biomolecules found in cell membranes produces the formation of a novel family of nanostructured materials with circular ordered esoporosity that mimic the structure of certain marine microorganisms

Medice:
Nanostructured titania for more durable orthopedic implants
Nanostructured coatings on metallic orthopedic implants accelerate osteoblast proliferation improving the adhesion between the implant and the bond. Finite element calculations have been used to prove the usefulness of ultrasonic spectroscopy to in-vivo monitor the evolution of the implant in real time.

The Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB) is a premier research organization in the frontier areas of modern biology. The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) is one of the constituent national laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research CSIR, the premier multidisciplinary Research & Development organisation of the Government of India. It was set up as a semi-autonomous Centre in 1977 in Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, became a full-fledged national laboratory during 1981-82, and was dedicated to the nation on 26 November, 1987 by the then Prime Minister of India late Shri Rajiv Gandhi. The ongoing research programmes at the CCMB are in three major categories - high quality basic research in the frontier areas of modern biology, research relevant to societal needs, and application-oriented research towards commercialisation. These include the areas of biomedicine & diagnostics, evolution & development, gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, host-parasite interactions, membrane biology, protein structure, bioinformatics, functional genomics, theoretical biology, etc. CCMB has also taken lead in the dissemination of modern biological information through popularisation of science, science education in schools, and has been a meeting point for art and science. In recognition of its contribution to modern biology, CCMB has been chosen as a Centre of Excellence by UNESCO Global Network for Molecular and Cell Biology MCBN and has been designated as a South Centre for Excellence for Research and Training by the Third World Academy of Sciences TWAS , Italy. Our three main areas of research are:

Hepatic Tissue Engineering
We are interested in understanding the structure/function relationship of the liver to improve cell-based therapy for liver disease. In particular, we focus on how the microenvironment around hepatocytes (the functional cell of the liver) affects cell fate and function. We utilize microfabrication tools (methods developed to manufacture microelectronic circuits) to control and study the role of cell-cell interactions, cell-extracellular matrix interactions, soluble stimuli (e.g. O2), and three-dimensional context on hepatocyte function.

Cell-Based BioMEMS
MEMS is a term used to describe integrated microscale devices that combine electrical, mechanical, and even optical components. Since many biological species are on the same length scale as MEMS devices, the synergy of combining biological systems with MEMS (BioMEMS) can provide the basis for novel, highly instructive biological platforms. We are interested in using arrays of living cells as biosensors and as high-throughput platforms to study fundamental aspects of stem cell biology. Our repertoire of tools includes chemical, topological, fluidic, electrical, and optical manipulation of living cells on chip platforms.

Nanobiotechnology
We are involved in a multidisciplinary effort to develop nanomaterials as tools for biological studies and as multifunctional agents for cancer therapies. By bridging the unique electromagnetic properties of nanomaterials with advances in bioconjugate chemistry, photonics, and phage display we aim to develop ‘intelligent' systems for tumor therapy and biomolecular detection. Our interest centers around nanoparticles and nanoporous materials that can be designed to perform complex tasks such as: home to a tumor, sense changes in cells and tissues, enhance imaging, and trigger the release of a therapeutic payload.

In CEMES, we study materials from an experimental and a theoretical point of view, from the atomic up to the macroscopic scale. CEMES encompasses an important activity in elaboration, chemical synthesis, realisation of new devices and instrumentation.

Of course, the CEMES experimental means cope with the challenge of study matter from nano-materials to nanoscale sciences: last generation of electron transmission microscopes, fabrication of UHV near-field microscopes (STM, AFM, SNOM), X-ray diffractometers. They allow to probe matter down to the atomic scale, to manipulate atoms and molecules and to start to study the quantum control of molecules.

The CEMES commitments are both fundamental and applied: induce, understand and model phenomena from atomic scale to materials in relation with the major present industrial domains (Aeronautics, electronics, chemistry)

The CEMES is strongly engaged towards the future, towards new frontiers of sciences and technologies like new materials and miniature machines in the realm of nanosciences, nano-materials and nanotechnologies. Those fascinating areas point out the possibilities offered by structuring matter atom by atom, reaching more efficient materials or establishing the future of nano-machines.

The European Molecular Biology Laboratory [EMBL] is an international research organisation with its main laboratory in Heidelberg [Germany], and four outstations in Hinxton, [UK] [the European Bioinformatics Institute, EBI], Grenoble [France], Hamburg [Germany], and Monterotondo [Italy].

The main laboratory in Heidelberg was inaugurated in 1978 as the first EMBL facility dedicated to basic molecular biology research, technology development, service provision and advanced training. Today more than 750 staff members are working at EMBL Heidelberg in five research units [Cell Biology and Biophysics, Developmental Biology, Gene Expression, Structural and Computational Biology and Directors' Research, covering two independent research groups headed by the Director General of EMBL and the Executive Director of EMBO], service facilities and administration.

Research at EMBL emphasizes experimental analysis at multiple levels of biological organisation, from the molecule to the organism, as well as computational biology, bioinformatics and systems biology. Research is supported by the development of enabling technologies that are made available to the scientific community in core facilities like for e.g. genomics, electron microscopy, advanced light microscopy, and proteomics. Many scientific breakthroughs have been made at EMBL Heidelberg, most notably the first systematic genetic analysis of embryonic development in the fruit fly by Christiane Nüsslein-Vollhard and Erich Wieschaus, for which they were awarded the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1995.

Outstanding training is available at multiple levels: predoctoral students, postdocs and visiting scientists are provided with exceptional training opportunities. Many courses, conferences and workshops are organised in collaboration with EMBL's sister organisation, the European Molecular Biology Organisation [EMBO]. Young scientists are trained at EMBL for a limited time before the majority of them move back to their home countries. As a result of its unique turnover policy, EMBL has become the major advanced training centre for molecular biology in Europe.

Heidelberg is the largest centre for biomedical research in Germany and home to the oldest German university, the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg. Many bilateral links between scientists at EMBL and the other Heidelberg research institutions have been established. In addition to many bilateral collaborations, EMBL participates in several larger projects: the Molecular Medicine Partnership Unit, a pilot project established in 2002 between the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg and EMBL; the BIOMS project in collaboration with the University of Heidelberg, the German Cancer Research Centre [DKFZ], the Max-Planck-Institute for Medical Research and the European Media Lab [EML Research]; a joint Chemical Biology Core Facility for small molecule screening that was established together with the German Cancer Research Centre [DKFZ] in 2004.

A very active Science and Society Programme and other outreach activities promote a better and broader understanding of the growing social and cultural relevance of the life sciences through a variety of activities and events where members of the scientific community, scholars from other disciplines, as well as members of the public meet to engage in a dialogue.

The Sensors, Actuators and Microsystems Laboratory was created in 1982 by the professor Nico F. de Rooij. Since then, SAMLAB has increased in size and has reached a staff of about 50 persons, including 15 PhD students.

SAMLAB is funded by the University of Neuchatel, the EPFL, the Commission of Technology and Innovation (KTI/CTI), the Swiss Federal Office for Education and Science, the Swiss National Science Foundation, the Swiss Foundation for Microtechnology Research, the Swiss Priority Program in Micro- and Nanosystem Technology (MINAST). SAMLAB is also a "node" of the European Network of Excellence in Microsystems (NEXUS) and has been appointed Competence Centre for bio-analytical microsystems within the EC EUROPRACTICE initiative.

CNM researchers will work at the leading edge of science and technology to develop capabilities and knowledge that complement those of industry. The challenges the CNM faces involve fabricating and exploring novel nanoscale materials and, ultimately, employing unique synthesis and characterization methods to control and tailor nanoscale phenomena. The unique capabilities of Argonne's Advanced Photon Source (APS) play a key role. APS's hard X-rays, harnessed in a nanoprobe beamline, will provide unprecedented capabilities to characterize extremely small structures.

Argonne's long-standing culture of outreach to, and inclusion of, the academic and industrial communities will help support regional and national goals and strategic interests. The CNM welcomes outside users, both as independent investigators and as collaborators, from a wide range of scientific fields. This accessibility ensures a cross-disciplinary approach to nano-related research that will help ideas and activities to cross-pollinate, mature, and evolve over time into the pathways of scientific investigation and discovery that will help shape the future of our society.

The laboratory was established in 1983 and known as Laser Single Atom Detection (LSAD) Laboratory. It was approved as an open laboratory by Ministry of Education in 1990. With the broadening of research area, the laboratory was renamed in 2001 as Key Laboratory of Atomic and Molecular NanoSciences (AMNS), Ministry of Education.

The Main Research Areas:

1. Theoretical Study of Detection, Recognition and Control of Atoms, Molecules and Nanometer Scale Particles.
2. Dynamics and Structure of Atoms, Molecules and Clusters.
3. Synthesization and Characterization of Nano Materials .
