BudgetSensors®, a Bulgarian manufacturer of silicon and silicon nitride probes, as well as AFM accessories for Atomic Force Microscopes (AFM), announces the introduction of a new tapping mode AFM probe, as well as a new feature for a selection of AFM probes.

Following the introduction of BudgetSensors®’ Soft Tapping Mode AFM Probes Tap150-G and Tap150Al-G, the company now announces the introduction of another type of Tapping Mode AFM probe – the Tap190-G. In addition to a resonance frequency of about 190 kHz, Tap190-G AFM probes are characterized by a long cantilever, compared to Tap300 and Tap150-G AFM probes, which is required for some specific models of AFM systems by certain manufacturers, such as Quesant.

At the same time, BudgetSensors announces that it now offers a selection of AFM probes featuring alignment grooves on the back side of the holder chip, which is indicated by the index “-G” in the product order code. Alignment grooves are a necessary requirement for the mounting of AFM probes into some specific AFM systems, such as NanoSurf. In AFM systems where alignment grooves are not necessary, this feature doesn’t affect the mounting of the AFM probe in any way.

The facility includes a 4,000 square foot cleanroom, three thin film labs, and a photo reduction darkroom. The Nanofab is managed by the Data Storage Systems Center (DSSC) and occupies space in the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) Department in Hamerschlag Hall and in the College of Engineering building, Roberts Hall.
The facility was constructed by the university to support the wide variety of thin film and solid state electronics research conducted primarily by the DSSC and the ECE department. Research requiring the use of the facility is inherently multidisciplinary. Faculty, staff, and students access the labs and collaborate on projects originating from the DSSC, ECE, Materials Science and Engineering, Physics, Robotics, Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and industry. In CEMES, we study materials from an experimental and a theoretical point of view, from the atomic up to the macroscopic scale. CEMES encompasses an important activity in elaboration, chemical synthesis, realisation of new devices and instrumentation.

Of course, the CEMES experimental means cope with the challenge of study matter from nano-materials to nanoscale sciences: last generation of electron transmission microscopes, fabrication of UHV near-field microscopes (STM, AFM, SNOM), X-ray diffractometers. They allow to probe matter down to the atomic scale, to manipulate atoms and molecules and to start to study the quantum control of molecules.

The George J. Kostas Nanoscale Technology and Manufacturing Center Facility will serve as the main facility for the new NSF Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing (CHN) at Northeastern University, in partnership with the University of Massachusetts Lowell, and the University of New Hampshire. The facility is open to faculty, students, researchers, coop students, and external users. The facility provides support and materials based on user fees.

Established through Mr. George J. Kostas '43 generous gift, the Nanoscale Technology and Manufacturing Center Facility will be ready in January 2005. The facility will extend and add capability to the existing Microfabrication and Microcontamination Laboratory in the Egan Research Center. The center will consist of three areas. The first area consists of class 10 and 100 cleanroom space and includes capability for nanolithography, wet chemical processes and characterization, including electron microscopy, scanning probe microscopy and particle characterization.

The second area will include testing, design, and imaging activities. The third area is dedicated to undergraduate and graduate student teams to work on projects with corporate partners.

New equipment incorporated into the Kostas Center includes a Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope with e-beam lithography capability, a precision alignment nanoimprint lithography system, a Multimode SPM and Nanomanipulator AFM System, and a surface energy analysis system.

The current facility represents a major fabrication and characterization resource for the Center for High-rate Nanomanufacturing. It includes 5000 ft2 of class 10/100 cleanroom space that includes 6 wafer MEMs fabrication facilities, including modern lithography, etch, thin film, and plating capabilities for 3 and 6 inch substrates as well as supercritical CO2 release and a full range of process and electrical test instruments. Sub-100 nm lithography is available using a J.C. Nabity Nanometer Pattern Generation System coupled with a JEOL SEM. NEU also has characterization facilities (STEM, XRD, NFSOM) and machine and electronics shops.

Microcontamination equipment includes a KLA-Tencor Laser surface scanner (200 nm resolution), two TSI CNC particle counters (10 nm resolution), a Goniometer, four Megasonic and two ultrasonic cleaning stations, a TSI particle classifier, and a Bond Tester.

CNM researchers will work at the leading edge of science and technology to develop capabilities and knowledge that complement those of industry. The challenges the CNM faces involve fabricating and exploring novel nanoscale materials and, ultimately, employing unique synthesis and characterization methods to control and tailor nanoscale phenomena. The unique capabilities of Argonne's Advanced Photon Source (APS) play a key role. The Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB) is a premier research organization in the frontier areas of modern biology. The objectives of the Centre are to aid the development of biotechnology inIndia on a sound basis, conduct training courses in advanced areas of biology, promote centralized national facilities for new and modern techniques in the inter-disciplinary areas of biology,interact with industry carrying out basic and applied work, and to collect, collate and disseminate information relevant to biological research. The Centre is ushering in the new millennium to continue its mission of conducting a high quality basic research in chosen areas of biology, socially relevant research and application-oriented work towards commercialization.

The Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) is one of the constituent national laboratories of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research CSIR, the premier multidisciplinary Research & Development organisation of the Government of India. It was set up as a semi-autonomous Centre in 1977 in Hyderabad, the capital city of Andhra Pradesh, became a full-fledged national laboratory during 1981-82, and was dedicated to the nation on 26 November, 1987 by the then Prime Minister of India late Shri Rajiv Gandhi. The ongoing research programmes at the CCMB are in three major categories - high quality basic research in the frontier areas of modern biology, research relevant to societal needs, and application-oriented research towards commercialisation. These include the areas of biomedicine & diagnostics, evolution & development, gene regulation in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, host-parasite interactions, membrane biology, protein structure, bioinformatics, functional genomics, theoretical biology, etc. CCMB has also taken lead in the dissemination of modern biological information through popularisation of science, science education in schools, and has been a meeting point for art and science. In recognition of its contribution to modern biology, CCMB has been chosen as a Centre of Excellence by UNESCO Global Network for Molecular and Cell Biology MCBN and has been designated as a South Centre for Excellence for Research and Training by the Third World Academy of Sciences TWAS , Italy. Many prestigious international and national awards have come to CCMB including the CSIR Technology Award (twice) and FICCI Award for outstanding achievements in Science & Technology.
