&lt;p&gt;Because innovation and scientific discovery cannot be constrained within international boundaries, KAUST&#039;s work will also occur well beyond its physical campus. An integral part of KAUST&#039;s research strategy is to support scientists at first-rank institutions around the world. Indeed, the University will also establish formal collaborations with such institutions, as well as with the private sector, around research of mutual interest. That work is set to begin immediately.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Supported by a multi-billion dollar endowment and governed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees, KAUST will:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;    * Provide leading researchers – both faculty and students – with the resources they need to do their best work and pursue their professional goals: cutting-edge tools and an environment uniquely free of administrative barriers that can inhibit innovation and discovery.&lt;br /&gt;
    * Convene the best minds – based strictly on merit – and create a collaborative community of passionate and talented researchers from around the world, who can transcend the boundaries of their fields to transform the lives of millions of others who will benefit from their work.&lt;br /&gt;
    * Act as a catalyst for research that applies science and technology to problems of human need, social advancement, and economic development in Saudi Arabia, across the Middle East region and around the globe.&lt;br /&gt;
    * Feature an academic structure that organizes interdisciplinary teams around problems of science and technology, a structure that most leaders in higher education around the world agree is well suited to meet the demands of 21st century research.&lt;br /&gt;
    * Focus initially on four interdisciplinary research clusters: 1) resources, energy and the environment; 2) biosciences and engineering; 3) materials science and engineering; and 4) applied mathematics and computational science.&lt;br /&gt;
    * Feature a campus that reflects KAUST&#039;s academic philosophy, which encourages collaboration and collegial relationships that can spawn innovation and invention. The campus will also be constructed for low environmental impact, with an emphasis on energy efficiency, sustainable development, and conservation of historical/cultural sites and sensitive ecosystems.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;KAUST will lead the world toward a constructive, interdependent and hopeful future by encouraging critical collaborations between East and West and, at the same time, continue a tradition of scholarly inquiry dating back to ancient Islamic institutions of learning such as the House of Wisdom.&lt;/p&gt;

Later, in 1906 it was relocated in the agriculturally progressive district of Coimbatore as an Agricultural College. During 1908, students were first admitted into the Agricultural College for an educational programme leading to Licentiate in Agriculture (L.Ag.).&lt;/p&gt;

1930  	- Recognized as a Post-graduate  Centre.&lt;br /&gt;

1971	- Formation  of TNAU.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;TNAU, rated as the ‘numero uno’  State Agricultural University in India, continues to maintain its hegemony in academic excellence, including agricultural research,  policy interfacing and outreach programmes. TNAU received the ‘Best University Award’ and ‘Best performing University’ from Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) for 1998.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;•The University’s constituent colleges received accreditation from ICAR / AICTE for superior standards of education and infrastructure.&lt;br /&gt;
•Well trained faculty in different areas of specialization.&lt;br /&gt;
•Largely responsible for the noteworthy and rapid agricultural development of the State of Tamil Nadu.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Uptil recent past, this group has devoted significant effort on understanding harmonic and anharmonic effects in simple, molecular and complex solids. Codes were developed in early eighties to compute phonon line widths and shifts in molecular crystals. Experiments using inelastic neutron scattering were also carried out to measure the temperature dependence of phonon profiles and correlating these with theoretical models for organic molecular crystals. Study of micellar systems using Small Angle Neutron Scattering Experiments leading to shear induced organization and decay of rod-like mi-cells was carried out.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Since recently, we have been involved in areas of research, like modeling structure and dynamics of doped and undoped carbon cluster solids, fullerene solids, carbon nanotubes and nanoparticales, simple and organic molecular crystals. We also study anharmonic effects, and energy flow in materials under high static and dynamic pressure.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Experimental activities involve irradiation of thin film samples to heavy and swift ions and characterizing them, working on methods to produce carbon nanotubes.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Fullerene Solids and Nanotubes: Using theoretical model potentials, we have accounted for bulk, structural, lattice dynamical, thermodynamical and electronic properties of pure and doped C60 solids and pure C70 solids and carbon nanotubes. This has also helped in studying phase transformations under high pressure and temperature in these materials.  We are studying structure of carbon nanotubes under high pressures to determine their structure and any modifications. We have also studied structural modifications of thin film of C60 under high energy (~100 MeV) high fluence heavy ions. Similar attempts are being made to study thin films of CNT.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;Since its formation in 2001, the Ohio University Nanoscale and Quantum Phenomena Institute (NQPI) has worked to promote research excellence in the nanoscale science and engineering of its members. The organization is a highly interdisciplinary entity with 26 members from two colleges and seven departments. NQPI members have developed on-going and steadily growing cross-campus collaborations. Several of these research efforts in nanoscience are already highly successful, as measured by strong external support and international recognition. &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Mission Statement:&lt;br /&gt;
•To enable a collective voice and visibility for nanoscience at Ohio University&lt;br /&gt;
•To foster cross-disciplinary research and educational activities in nanoscience at Ohio University&lt;br /&gt;
•To enable Ohio University to attract major research and educational grants, conferences, workshops, awards and accolades to Athens&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Research of NQPI:&lt;br /&gt;
The focus of nanoscience at Ohio University has developed into two major NQPI categories. In 2004, the Biomimetic Nanoscience and Nanoscale Technology Initiative (BNNT) was formed as a research thrust of NQPI. The primary focus of BNNT is on Soft Nano. BNNT’s research includes the following three overlapping areas:&lt;br /&gt;
•Nanomaterials&lt;br /&gt;
•Nanosensors&lt;br /&gt;
•Nanomedicine &lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;NQPI’s other focus is on Hard Nano research involving surface science and condensed matter areas. Soft and Hard Nano are areas of nanoscience that overlap, and almost all members of BNNT are members of NQPI. The Hard Nano research has been condensed into the following three focus areas where Ohio University already has particular strengths in both experiment and theory:&lt;br /&gt;
1. Nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, nanomagnetism and nanospinstronics&lt;br /&gt;
2. Nanoscale Properties, Manipulation, and Assembly&lt;br /&gt;
3. Quantum Structures, Nanocrystals, and Nanosensors&lt;br /&gt;
Grants and Awards&lt;br /&gt;
Members of NQPI currently comprise a network of cutting-edge researchers who already bring in millions of dollars in external grant support, often through prestigious awards including:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;• National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award&lt;br /&gt;
• NSF Presidential Early CAREER award in Science &amp;amp; Engineering&lt;br /&gt;
• Two NSF Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team Awards&lt;br /&gt;
• Funding from the Office of Naval Research and the National Institute of Health&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Educational Activities:&lt;br /&gt;
NQPI members have formulated specific plans for a Nanoscience Graduate Education Program that involves NanoMENTORING and a NanoEXCHANGE. The program is designed to bring students from across the campus, and across the world together to increase and strengthen collaborations. The program will eventually lead to a Graduate Certificate in Nanoscience. An Undergraduate Certificate will also be available.&lt;br /&gt;

The Center uses nanotechnology to study physical processes on which life is based using the simplest model systems — those that exist on the level of a single molecule or several molecules. By doing this, researchers plan to gain a better understanding of gene regulation, molecular signaling and molecular transport in cells that will lead to improved biosensors and other new technologies.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Center for Single Molecule Biophysics seeks to better understand the physical basis of life by studying the individual molecules that comprise living cells. Researchers at the Center are using scanning probe methods to measure and manipulate individual molecules. Our premise is that single molecules are simple enough to be molded accurately with computer simulations, yet complex enough to reflect the variations that are important to their function.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Center is also dedicated to advancing the latest techniques for research on the single molecule scale and to translating discoveries into new tools and new applications that are relevant to promoting health and combating disease. With a clearer understanding of the individual components that comprise integrated living systems, researchers are better able to grasp the many complex interactions between gene products (molecules) that cause disease. By learning from nature’s repertoire of experiments on its own ”nanomachines” researchers at the Center are figuring out how to craft components for machinery of undreamt-of complexity and sophistication.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Our research program is inherently interdisciplinary. The tools are in the domain of engineering and chemistry: nanostructures that connect to molecules and instruments that manipulate and measure at the single molecule level. The interactions and modeling come from physics: understanding the quantum phenomena that dominate interactions on this length scale and building simple models of the complex many-particle phenomena. The systems come from biology: molecules involved in gene expression (signaling and the control of processes in living cells). Finally, the building of molecular model systems and the controlled assembly of nanostructures is dependent upon chemistry, biochemistry and materials chemistry).&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The recent evolution in nanotechnology has given us new tools with which researchers can imagine measure, manipulate and modify individual molecules, one at a time. Previous probes of biological molecules, such as X-ray crystallography, inferred their properties by averaging billions of molecules. However, single molecule studies now show that, outside the confines of a crystal, proteins fluctuate through a series of very different structures. Therefore, the crystal structures are often not only inappropriate, but they fail to capture the set of states that the protein uses to do its job.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;For example, adhesion proteins must adopt one structure when a cell rests and another (non-sticky) structure when the cell moves. But molecules are in a state of constant fluctuation, with, on average, more of them in the ‘sticky’ state when the cell rests, changing to more in the ‘non-sticky’ state when the cells move. The only way to capture the structural changes that drive the process is to study just one molecule as it jumps between the two states. Thus, single molecule methods are often the only way to follow the changes in structure that rival the fundamental processes of life.&lt;/p&gt;

    * A spin coater for the deposition of thin, transparent, nano-composite films&lt;br /&gt;
    * A complete set of conventional ceramic processing equipment such as pot mills, uniaxial presses, and isostatic presses&lt;br /&gt;
    * Several optical microscopes for material characterization&lt;br /&gt;
    * Regular and easy access to a scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction equipment, spectrophotometer, surface area analyzer, and a thermal analyzer within the Materials Science and Engineering department&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The Center has access to the College of Engineering Micro/Nanofabrication Facility at the University of Utah. This is a multi-purpose cleanroom facility with approximately 5,300 ft² of laboratory floor space which provides the clean environment necessary for semiconductor materials and device research, micromachining, microfabrication, and semiconductor materials systems research. The laboratory has equipment for the deposition of materials, photolithography, test/characterization/inspection equipment, and many other planar processes necessary for micro and nano system research and characterization.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;The recently established Surface Analysis and Nano Imaging Laboratory is equipped with various instrumentation including the Tencor P-10 Stylus profilometer, a Kratos AxisUltraDLD (Imaging XPS, Auger, ISS), a Digital Instruments Dimension 3000 AFM, a Polyvar optical microscope with digital imaging with Nomarski, etc.&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;p&gt;The Nanoscience &amp;amp; Nanotechnology Cluster (NanoCluster) is a NTU-wide network of research centres that includes shared facilities for nanofabrication, nanocharacterization, and exploitation of nanotechnology applications. The NanoCluster seeks to coordinate, facilitate, and stimulate research in nanotechnology in NTU by grouping together the following centres in NTU: Advanced Materials Research Centre (AMRC), Microelectronics Centre (MEC), Photonics Research Centre (PhRC), Micro-electromechanical Systems (MEMS) and Precision Engineering Centre (PEN).&lt;/p&gt;

At its core, the Center was formed to take advantage of the advances in the basic sciences and engineering and apply them to biological systems for medical applications. Participants came with an extremely wide range of expertise: optics, chemistry, biology, applied physics, and computation. The Center has successfully competed for funding from a variety of sources, including the NIH Unconventional Innovations Program and NASA.&lt;br /&gt;
Over this period, the interdisciplinary collaboration has proven very successful. A tremendous amount of knowledge has been generated and, equally important, a large range of technology has been developed. Examples include examination of nanoparticle interactions with membranes, synthesis and characterization of novel nanoparticles for targeted cancer treatment and MRI contrast enhancement, and development of minimally invasive two-photon fiber optic probes for detection and diagnosis of cancer. In each of these cases, the success of our investigation required the interdisciplinary skills provided by a team of researchers drawn from across campus.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;A rate-limiting step has been to facilitate productive interaction of these diverse scientific disciplines. To both recognize the success of the Center and improve the interaction of our multidisciplinary team of chemists, physicists, engineers and biologists collaborating on nanoscience in biology and medicine, the university expanded the Center into the &quot;Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences&quot; (M-NIMBS) on April 21, 2005. James R. Baker Jr., M.D., the Ruth Dow Doan Professor of Biologic Nanotechnology and Chief of the Division of Allergy, serves as the Institute&#039;s first director. This Regentially chartered research institute brings together a larger group of interdisciplinary researchers to apply the techniques and knowledge from the physical sciences to biological and medical research. M-NIMBS will have centralized facilities and core resources that enable interdisciplinary teams of faculty to collaborate. It is expected that the interaction of nanoscale analytical science, synthetic materials science, and engineering with biological systems offers great opportunities for the biomedical sciences.&lt;/p&gt;
