2nd EU-ICT/FET Cluster Meeting

Short description

The 2nd EU/FET-Cluster meeting will help to establish a critical mass of R&D at a European level and to stimulate development of an interdisciplinary community of researchers.

Long description

In order for the field of emerging nanoelectronics to continue growing exponentially worldwide and therefore lead to new commercial applications and to change the micro and nanoelectronics paradigm, it is necessary to educate new researchers who can work across traditional disciplines. High-level dissemination activities such as this 2nd EU/FET-Cluster meeting will help to establish a critical mass of R&D at a European level and to stimulate development of an interdisciplinary community of researchers.
During this meeting, an open plenary session (1 day) and restricted EU project reviews will take place.

The 1 day plenary session program will be composed of EU representatives presentations, invited talks and short contributions on IST/FET FP6 scientific research highlights and future FP7 nanoICT funded projects.

The Advanced Materials Research Center (AMRC) is a industry-driven virtual R&D center focused on the commercialization of advanced technologies. The center is a collaboration between the State of Texas, SEMATECH, and the state's research universities.

SEMATECH is a world class, non-profit consortium that conducts R&D for the semiconductor industry. Established in Austin in 1988, SEMATECH is widely credited with jump-starting the regional high-tech economy and strengthening the semiconductor and information technology clusters in the state.

AMRC industry programs are conducted with matching funds from SEMATECH and SEMATECH manages all of the university programs selected by the University Technical Advisory Committee, a group whose membership is comprised of industry and university representatives.

The project brings together leading academic and industrial partners, each of which has a distinct role or skill in the project. A key strength of AMBIO is the unification of these partners into a coordinated, interdisciplinary programme incorporating all the necessary research elements from polymer chemistry and nanosurface engineering technologies to biological evaluation, coatings development and end-user trials.
The AMBIO network of 31 partners (10 Universities, 15 companies, 6 research organisations) also covers the full value chain from basic science to application, development, manufacturing and commercialisation, culminating in key customers for the designated fields of application. Partners mainly from universities and research institutions will work on the development and characterisation of novel nanostructured surfaces and understanding of how they function in controlling biofouling. Industrial partners will mainly focus on the manufacturing and application of innovative products. AMBIO will effectively commercialise its developments, especially with the strong contribution of SMEs in development and manufacturing.
Twelve EU Member States are represented as well as Turkey and Israel.

The 5-year project has a total budget of € 17.9 million of which € 11.9 million is funded by the European Community, and it started on March 1st 2005.

The ARC Centre for Functional Nanomaterials was established in November 2003 under the Australian Research Council's Centre of Excellence Program (Reserved Round). The Centre aims to become a world class centre of excellence with leading Australian researchers in nanomaterials.

Nanomaterials are advanced materials constructed with nanoscale building blocks, with molecular precision of control. Such materials possess much improved physical and chemical properties. These properties change with particle size, and can be controlled by manipulating the building blocks. By functional nanomaterials, we mean those nanomaterials having essential functional properties, that are useful in processes such as adsorption, ion-conducting, separation, catalysis, biomaterials and biosensing, not in structural and electronic applications.

The Centre aims (1) to carry out world-class research at both fundamental and applied levels into the synthesis, characterization and application of various nanomaterials; (2) to provide first rate research training contributing to the growth of Australia's human capital; and (3) to establish close research linkages with leading international groups, positioning Australia as a world leader in this emerging field. The programs will lead to innovative techniques and technologies that will underpin new materials and products for applications in clean energy, environmental, and health care industries.

The Centre has its headquarters at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, and a New South Wales/Australian Capital Territory Node based at The University of New South Wales. It brings together leading researchers from four Australian Universities with the Centre's Chief Investigators coming from The University of Queensland, The University of New South Wales, The Australian National University and The University of Western Sydney. We seek to establish a center with an impact which will increase the visibility of Indiana as the center of activity in computational nanoscience as well as solidify its position as a leader in information and nanotechnology, and hence help to attract substantial federal and industrial research funds. In addition, it will help involve Indiana industry in the research at an early stage so that they can exploit the benefits of nanotechnology. Quantum dots and dot ensembles constitute the theme or common area of the proposed research. In the spectrum of nanotechnologies, these nanosystems have the potential for early development and manufacture of new optical and electronic devices. Three sub-projects support the research theme: by examining different kinds of electron and energy transfer mechanisms, a study of Coupled Quantum Dot Ensembles complements research on Quantum-dot Cellular Automata, and A Computational Hub for Nanotechnology provides both computational research tools and an easy method for sharing simulation tools with industry. The sub-projects here all represent strongly collaborative cutting edge research at the forefront of nanotechnology. They will help promote cross- fertilization of new ideas and techniques within the Center. Our primary goal will be to transfer the technology of validated theory and computational tools from the academic-based Center to the practitioners' development environment which is nanotechnology-based industry. Under Ball State's coordination, computational nanoscience researchers from Purdue University, University of Notre Dame, Valparaiso University, and Ohio University will participate in the Center.
