Spider silk has long been admired by material scientists for its unique combination of high-performance mechanical properties including toughness, strength, lightness, and flexibility. Unfortunately, no one has been able to produce this wonder material in commercial quantities. Nexia is the only company which has successfully produced fibres from recombinant spider silk and is currently in the process of developing commercial quantities of BioSteel using its proprietary transgenic goat technology. Medical device applications of BioSteel-M include wound closure systems like microsutures, surgical meshes, and artificial ligaments such as anterior cruciate ligaments in the knee (ACL). Industrial BioSteel-I applications may include consumer products such as biodegradable fishing line, tennis strings and military applications (soft body armour). Using its transgenic platform technology, Nexia also produces biopharmaceuticals, where it uses its transgenic production system to produce complex proteins that can be used as drugs.

About the Nanowalker project:
In actual nanotechnology applications the small sample that is to be manipulated or observed is brought to the - usually - big and bulky machine which will perform the desired task: this is usually done by a user, and requires long times in term of preparation and operation, thus limits drastically the throughput of the process.

The core idea behind the NanoWalker project of the NanoRobotics Laboratory of the Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal (EPM), in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), is to break with tradition. From now on, the instruments are to be brought to the samples in the form of miniature wireless instrumented robots called "NanoWalkers". With the NanoWalker robot approach, instrumentations and throughput requirements can be adjusted extremely fast by simply adding, replacing, or removing robots at will.

The laboratory's team has set its objective to develop the first version of this NanoWalker robot. With approximative dimensions of 30mm x 30mm, it will be equipped with a Scanning Tunnelling Microscope (STM) to help it in its conquest of the infinitely small.

The focus of our research program in the next few years is to apply the tools, techniques and materials developed in the past few years to the emerging new field of Nanoelectronics. In particular, our goal is to provide experimental data that will allow the stringent testing of modelling. Modelling is very important in understanding the nanoworld, but many approximations commonly made have not been tested experimentally. Experiments that control all degrees of freedom are crucial, as this leaves no room for (educated) guessing, fitting or fudging the interpretation of the data. Scanning probe microscopy is an ideal tool for these experiments, as it allows one to perform imaging, manipulation and measurements on the atomic level. Once one understands the fundamental science, engineering rules of thumb can be developed and applied to the emerging field of nanotechnology.
