The nanoworkshop has been initiated following a £1.4 million SRIF (HEFCE) award followed by multi-million pound investment from the University of Manchester, EPSRC & The Wolfson Foundation and was officially opened by Lord Sainsbury on 7th April 2003.

The collaborative nature makes the facility really unique and has already initiated a large number of projects from many departments. Emphasis will be on a niche area in nanotechnology, which lies between the so-called "bottom-up" and "top-down" approaches and remains probably the least explored, yet most close to possible applications.

ITS provides electrical tomography instrumentation, software, sensors and technical support. This enables customers to continuously scan a volume and determine the distribution of electrical properties as they change over time.

Tomography involves taking measurements around the periphery of an object (eg process vessel or patient) to determine what is going on inside.

The best known technique is CAT scanning in medicine, however process tomography instrumentation is cheaper, faster and more robust.

Nanoco was established in December 2001 in order to commercialize unique, proprietary and widely-patented methods of synthesizing quantum dots developed by the company's founder, Professor Paul O'Brien, head of Chemistry at the University of Manchester - one of the most published scientists in the field.

The company was launched with assistance from the University's incubator, Manchester Innovation Limited (MIL), and various EU government grant awards schemes. It is owned by the founder, other members of the management team and MIL.
Nanoco's mission is to be the worldwide leader in the manufacture of high-performance nanoparticles.

The RSC Biomaterials Chemistry Interest Group was set up in 2005 to provide a focus for groups in UK universities and industry working on the synthesis and characterisation of biomaterials. The group aims to enhance the understanding of the chemistries underlying the use of biomaterials in applications including prostheses, drug delivery and regenerative medicine.

Annual meetings of the RSC Biomaterials Chemistry Interest Group are designed to promote biomaterials chemistry research and development, enhance existing links, foster new collaborations and spread expertise. Meetings give participants the opportunity to present new work, discuss data and help to shape the future of research in this important and growing area of chemistry.
