Memjet technology is comprised of four tightly integrated components: page-width printheads, driver chips, ink and software. Printheads are comprised of individual microchip segments, joined together into page-width printing systems. Each chip measures just 20mm across and contains 6,400 nozzles. The printheads incorporate five color channels that can be flexibly configured to meet the needs of diverse markets. The driver chip is an integrated printing system that calculates 900 million drops per second and drives 70,400 nozzles in a standard A4/letter printer, delivering color page-width printing at 60 pages per minute. The Memjet software is highly portable and modular, allowing software developers to drive Memjet printers at rated speed and quality avoiding the details of printhead, nozzles or hardware. Printheads and driver chips can scale from 20mm to large format sizes, enabling printing in virtually any width. Introduction

The manufacture of nano-scale materials presents unique challenges for researchers, managers and safety professionals. Though many manufacturing processes and procedures may remain the same the hazards encountered are increased with the introduction of nano-particles whose dangers are not fully understood. Development of nano-materials requires a higher level of user and environmental protection, but it is widely believed that the risk from these unknown hazards can be reduced through the use of good laboratory practices and engineering controls designed to minimize worker and environmental exposure.

Improved Safety through Containment

Material containment is a key factor in protecting users and the environment from accidental exposures. When mounted to standard laboratory vessels the Delp Mixer efficiently seals for varying conditions such as moderate pressure or deep vacuum; allowing the fully contained mixing of nano-particles and blended materials. The mixer is designed to integrate with established products such as explosion-proof motors and clean room equipment, thus maximizing the Health, Safety & Environmental advantages of established controls and increasing the benefits to the user and the surrounding environment.

Safer Equipment

When working with nano-materials safety is increased when separation between the user and the materials can be maximized. Barriers such as gloves, protective clothing and standard PPE for hazardous materials are believed to be effective first steps in user protection. The molecular analysis of DNA, RNA, and protein derived from diagnostic tissue specimens and/or blood samples has revolutionized pathology. Techniques such as Immunocytochemistry, Southern blot analysis, and especially the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are an integral part of the diagnostic repertoire in pathology. However, the reliability of tests based on tissue or cell extracts often depends crucially on the relative abundance of the cell population in question, and sampling errors or a large number of “contaminating” cells as a result of the inherent complexity of primary tissues which can lead to false negative results. Therefore, cell separation has become increasingly commonplace for researchers and clinicians who study single cells or homogeneous cells populations to understand how cells function in different environments or to diagnose disease occurrence, recurrence, or progression.
Columbus NanoWorks (CNW) has created magnetic nanoparticles through use of Delp Mixers. CNW colloidal particles needed to be highly specific as defined by a tight standard deviation in hydrodynamic diameter, as well as having an efficient coupling process of antibodies to the surface of the particles to target cancer cells, stem cells, and other cell types. Tight control of reaction parameters within the Delp mixer allowed CNW to produce particles with a very tight size distribution, as well as coat the particles so that they retained their magnetic properties even when exposed to air. This allowed for the enrichment of 1 ovarian tumor cell in 107 total nucleated blood cells with an average recovery of 74.1% of spiked tumor samples, as well as an average 3.21 log10 depletion of contaminating cells in a flow through magnetic cell separation device. Reagents of this nature could have significant clinical impact in the early stage detection of cancers, as well as therapeutic applications in the selection of stem cells and islet cells for transplantation.

Delp Mixers have also allowed CNW to scale up their manufacturing efforts in the production of their silica particles, dextran particles, as well as ferric oxides.

The main field of interests is physics of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs), namely the electron and phonon energy structure of QDs, electron-phonon interactions, dynamics of various elementary excitations of QD systems, and mechanisms of energy transfer in NC-based systems. Pioneering works on the interaction of optical phonons with QD electronic subsystem have been carried out here.
Prof. Vladimir Oleinikov’s team from Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry (SIOBC), Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia.
The main RTD activities of this group are concentrated on the new selective and ultrasensitive spectroscopic techniques for the analysis of different classes of biological objects based on new methods of preparation of nanostructures. At present, very promising results in the development of new generation of immunoassays based on the fluorescent quantum dots have been got.

RTD activities consist of studying the chemistry and physics of nanostructures including semiconductor QDs and optically active composite materials based on inorganic nanoparticles. Primary scientific interest of the group now lies in the chemical synthesis of highly luminescent colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals and their utilization as novel type of fluorescent materials for biological applications.
Head of NFM Ltd is Dr. Oleg Sharapov, Ph.D. in Economical Sciences. Dr. Sharapov has directed diverse technological and scientific projects ranging from gas production, where he was a Director of company working with the GAZPROM holding, to development of anticancer drugs in collaboration with Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Sharapov is the author of several publications on management under specific conditions of Russian economical development. Dr. Sharapov also holds a Master of Sciences degree in physics with specialization in optical spectroscopy. He has developed and is involved in development and quality control of functionalized fluorescent labels based on CdSe/ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals.

Dr. Chuvurin has over 150 scientific publications and 122 ex-USSR patents in the fields of organic, physical and pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmacology. He has developed several original synthetic pharmacological medications. Prof. Dr. Alexander Baranov is Head of Laboratory of Photophysics and Photochemistry of Quantum Nanostructures and Professor of St.-Petersburg State Polytechnic University. Prof Baranov is a recognized expert in the physics of quantum nanostructures including the energy transfer mechanisms within the nanostructures. Beginning from the middle of 80th, he pioneered studies of electronic and phonon structures of the semiconductor nanocrystals by linear and non-linear resonant optical methods where the first information about the NC electron structure, electron-phonon interaction and its size-dependence and the NC-surroundings interactions was obtained. Last years, the main field of interests of Prof. Baranov comprises mechanisms of the energy transfer in systems of core/shell quantum dots and nanobiotechnological approaches to biosensing. Dr. Baranov authored nearly 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and a co-author of a WO02/073155 "Ultra-sensitive non-isotopic nanocrystals" patent family.
Dr. Mikhail Artemyev from the Institute for Physico-Chemical Problems, Minsk, Byelorussia, has a more than 15 years of experience is studying the chemistry and physics of nanostructures including semiconductor quantum dots and optically active composite materials based on inorganic nanoparticles. Dr. Artemyev has more than 60 scientific publications in the international per-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. Dr Artemyev developed a number of synthetic protocols for the highly luminescent II-VI nanocrystals (CdSe, ZnSe, etc.) with controllable optical properties and preparation of biocompatible water soluble fluorescent markers based on semiconductor nanocrystals. He was a key participant in the original investigations of enhanced luminescence from semiconductor quantum dots on the surface of gold colloids, preparation of self-organized structures with quantum dots and biomolecules. Dr. Artemyev is a co-author of a WO02/073155 "Ultrasensitive non-isotopic nanocrystals" patent family.

A professor at a major university has applied nanotechnology to invent a new generation of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes for water reuse and desalination applications. These nanotechnology-based membranes have shown the promise to dramatically improve the baseline economics of desalination and water reuse without having to reinvest in a new technology platform or alter current operational techniques. Driving this next generation performance is the combination of a highly permeable yet fouling-resistant membrane that maintains industry standards for solute rejection. NanoH2O has obtained a worldwide license to develop and market thin-film nanocomposite (TFN) membrane technology which is currently patent-pending.

A Brief History of RO

In the 1970’s, despite their propensity to foul, polyamide thin-film composite (TFC) membranes replaced cellulose acetate RO membranes as the industry standard because of superior performance in permeability and solute rejection. Driving the growth of the desalination industry, the optimization of polyamide TFC membranes have improved both permeability and solute rejection several times over while decreasing the cost of RO membrane modules seven-fold. The result has made RO cost competitive for treating both freshwater and groundwater as well as a viable option for seawater purification in locales that have limited freshwater supply. However, future economic improvements will be limited to small increments because of the permeability constraints and unchanged fouling propensity of polyamide TFC membranes.

The Future of RO

The next large improvement in RO economics is likely to come from the ability to operate at a higher flux – increasing output capacity without further capital investment or requiring less capital expenditure and less energy for a desired capacity – without compromising solute rejection. Only a more permeable and fouling resistant membrane can achieve this new level of performance. Further benefit from such a membrane would also come from a reduction in operating pressure (and associated energy consumption) and membrane maintenance. With the noted limitations in polyamide TFC membranes, a new generation of highly permeable, fouling-resistant RO membranes must be developed in order for reverse osmosis processes and the desalination industry to realize the next step in market expansion.
