Mitsui & Co., Ltd. (Mitsui) has positioned nanotechnology as a key new business area and is moving forward with plans to establish four research institutes to engage in R&D related to nanotechnology. Mitsui envisions these activities will result in the development of a number of commercial opportunities and plans to invest in selected nanotechnology-related businesses in the years to come.

Mitsui has positioned nanotechnology, along with IT and biotechnology, as a top priority area in its Medium-Term Strategic & Financial Plan released earlier this year. To further these activities, Mitsui set aside 6.2 billion Yen in funds in July 2001 to be used over a five-year period to develop new opportunities in two nanotechnology-related areas and is preparing further investment in two other areas. Behind this targeting of nanotechnology, IT, and biotechnology as key areas is Mitsui's conviction that what will be expected from science in the 21st century will be different from that in the 20th century. Specifically, more emphasis will be placed on applications and their usefulness to society, especially in contributing to the solution of problems in two major areas, namely the environment and energy.

What is nanotechnology? Nanotechnology is the creation and utilization of materials, devices, and systems involving ultra-small shapes on the order of one-billionth of a meter - one nanometer - to about 100 nanometers. Materials this tiny are approximately equivalent in size to atoms, at the small end of the nanotechnology spectrum, and range up to the size of molecules and supramolecular structures, such as proteins.

Nanotechnology will have an influence on virtually all industries from computers to opto-electronic devices, energy, chemicals, and pharmaceuticals. In fact, research is already under way that crosses over a broad range of academic disciplines from chemistry to physics, engineering, and biology. As research proceeds, the world of nanotechnology appears to be one of serendipity, opening the way to a seeming wonderland of scientific results, including breakthroughs in quantum mechanics, which deals with the transference or transformation of energy at the atomic or molecular scale.

Accordingly, nanotechnology materials have attracted great attention from scientists because they exhibit novel and potentially highly valuable physical, chemical, and biological properties. The anticipated nanotechnology revolution is expected to stimulate further evolution in IT, namely in the computer industry, and biotechnology, particularly in the life sciences. Nanotechnology is also expected to make possible the economic production of micromachines and renewable energy sources, lead to the development of new methods for conserving and generating energy, and provide new environmental technologies.

The ubiquitous information technology which realizes seamless communications is essential for bringing about the revitalization of our country in which the aged society will certainly dominate in the near future. In February 2002, a new research center, Nanoelectronics Collaborative Research Center (NCRC), was established at University of Tokyo for the purpose of realizing core technologies for the development of the ubiquitous information devices based on nanotechnologies. The NCRC is jointly operated by Institute of Industrial Science (IIS) and Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), University of Tokyo. The NCRC located on Komaba Research Campus aims at becoming one of the Center of Excellence (COE) in the world of advanced nano-photonics and electronics.
The NCRC investigates nanophotonic and electron devices in close collaboration with various industrial leaders, domestic universities, and overseas universities which are actively conducting research in this field. The NCRC will develop a collaborative research network between universities and industries, as well as training young persons of exceptional ability who can take a strong leadership role in the nanoelectronics field.
The NCRC is the organization selected to execute a large national project, "Nano-Photonic and Electron Devices Technology", which is one of the MEXT Focused Research and Development Projects. This project was started in 2002 as a five year project with the aim of developing innovative technologies for nano-photonic and electron devices with semiconductor nanotechnologies including quantum dots and photonic crystals. This project is jointly executed with a METI national project, "Development of Photonic Network Devices", of which the core research lab is located on also Komaba Research Campus.
