New approach in nanotechnology have been opened by developing techniques of nanostructures preparation, using the high energy ions produced by ion beams accelerators. At present, very promising results in the development of new generation of immunoassays based on the fluorescent quantum dots have been got.
Dr. Mikhail Artemyev’s team from the Institute for Physico-Chemical Problems, Minsk, Byelorussia.
RTD activities consist of studying the chemistry and physics of nanostructures including semiconductor QDs and optically active composite materials based on inorganic nanoparticles. Primary scientific interest of the group now lies in the chemical synthesis of highly luminescent colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals and their utilization as novel type of fluorescent materials for biological applications.
Head of NFM Ltd is Dr. Oleg Sharapov, Ph.D. in Economical Sciences. Dr. Sharapov has directed diverse technological and scientific projects ranging from gas production, where he was a Director of company working with the GAZPROM holding, to development of anticancer drugs in collaboration with Shemyakin-Ovchinnikov Institute of Bioorganic Chemistry of Russian Academy of Sciences. Dr. Sharapov is the author of several publications on management under specific conditions of Russian economical development. Dr. Sharapov also holds a Master of Sciences degree in physics with specialization in optical spectroscopy. Prof. Dr. Alexander Baranov is Head of Laboratory of Photophysics and Photochemistry of Quantum Nanostructures and Professor of St.-Petersburg State Polytechnic University. Prof Baranov is a recognized expert in the physics of quantum nanostructures including the energy transfer mechanisms within the nanostructures. Beginning from the middle of 80th, he pioneered studies of electronic and phonon structures of the semiconductor nanocrystals by linear and non-linear resonant optical methods where the first information about the NC electron structure, electron-phonon interaction and its size-dependence and the NC-surroundings interactions was obtained. Last years, the main field of interests of Prof. Baranov comprises mechanisms of the energy transfer in systems of core/shell quantum dots and nanobiotechnological approaches to biosensing. Dr. Baranov authored nearly 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and a co-author of a WO02/073155 "Ultra-sensitive non-isotopic nanocrystals" patent family.

Dr Artemyev developed a number of synthetic protocols for the highly luminescent II-VI nanocrystals (CdSe, ZnSe, etc.) with controllable optical properties and preparation of biocompatible water soluble fluorescent markers based on semiconductor nanocrystals. He was a key participant in the original investigations of enhanced luminescence from semiconductor quantum dots on the surface of gold colloids, preparation of self-organized structures with quantum dots and biomolecules. Dr. Artemyev is a co-author of a WO02/073155 "Ultrasensitive non-isotopic nanocrystals" patent family.

Recently Chemical and Engineering News had an issue devoted to nanotechnology. One of the articles listed and discussed the many new firms entering the field of nanoparticles. In that article C&E News referred to Cabot, describing us as venerable.

Currently the exciting new field is nanotechnology. Governments are investing heavily in research and development and you can attend at least one conference a week with nano in its title. At one of these conferences a few years ago, the plenary speaker announced that nano particles have reached commercialization and that sales exceeded $20 million in the past year. Of course they ignored that the fact that carbon black sales exceed $4 billion and precipitated silica sales exceed those of carbon black. They also ignored the many, many other fine particle products that go into almost every conceivable materials application.

What is nanotechnology? The numerous topics that are raised under the heading of nanotechnology are one of two types. The first includes very small ordered structures. The approaches to making these ordered structures apparently are also of two different types. One is the more or less conventional construction. Techniques such as the atomic force microscope or extremely resolved photolithography are being used to make micro-machines on an increasingly smaller scale. The other approach is termed "self assembly" and in its most complex form is the way the structures of living things are created. The techniques have in common the fact that the chemistry determines spatial structure.

The second type of topic includes fine particles or fine porous media that are more or less disordered. The varieties include truly disordered fractal particles such as those of aerosols, mono-dispersed spherical particles such as quantum dots, small fibers such as single or multi-wall carbon tubes, and templated porous or multi-phase particles. In general, these types of materials are made by precipitation, exploiting the phenomena of nucleation and growth. The precipitations can be single or multi-step and they can take place in media with low viscosity and therefore rapid mass transfer, such flames, or with high viscosity and therefore slow mass transfer, such as molten salt or polymer matrices.

The first type of topic is the area where the science and the technologies are developing the fastest. However, many new approaches to the second area have recently emerged and often they are ingenious and intriguing.

Cabot's core capabilities are in many aspects of the second type. We have excellent expertise in high temperature aerosol processes in both intellectual understanding and commercial operations. Similarly, we understand dense phase precipitations, with commercial operations using reduction precipitation of tantalum from molten salt and hydrothermal precipitation from aqueous solutions of mixed oxides, as well as large pilot plant operations in silica gelation for aerogels. In all of these areas, we have proprietary technologies that allow us to achieve particles or porous media with unique morphologies.

We also have proprietary technology for creating the desired surface chemistry on high surface are materials. Perhaps the most notable one is our ability to covalently bond organic groups to the surface of most of the many different forms of carbon.

We also understand many of the aspect of deagglomeration or deaggregation. We use both mechanical and chemical approaches to the problem where applicable.

Cabot is not a center of expertise for either of the process used in the first type of nano-technology. We have created a research capability in "smart" polymer design and fabrication. We are learning how to exploit such techniques as block copolymer self-ordering.

Our research and development programs are very strong in the second type or "conventional" nanotechnolgy. We are also investing in expanding our capabilities in at least some of the "new, hot" areas. We want to work with others to create solutions to materials problems.

Our innovative Size Exclusion (SEC) phase derives from a unique proprietary surface chemistry process which results in a uniform polymer chains covalently bonded on the silica surface. Such a uniform stationary phase is neutral and hydrophilic, which has negligible nonspecific interactions with biological molecules, especially proteins. KSV Instruments Ltd has more than 20 years of experience in developing and manufacturing instruments for nano- and surface science research. The main products of the company are instruments for surface/interfacial tension and contact angle measurements, as well as so called Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett instruments, which are used for preparing and studying nanometer thick organic layers on air-water interfaces and solid substrates.
Furthermore, KSV also manufactures more specialized characterization instruments such as Brewster Angle Microscopes for thin organic film characterization and Quartz Crystal Microbalances for very small (nanogram) mass changes at interfaces during adsorption/desorption processes or reactions taking place at the interface. KSV is very actively looking for new ideas for instruments to develop in the field of nano- and biotechnology and surface chemistry.

The new technology enables the covalent bonding of functional groups to the surface of magnetic particles. The particles, with diameters below 50 nm, achieve magnetic moments 5x exceeding the moment of ironoxide beads and 10x exceeding the moment of dynabeads.

Semiconductors and Electronic Materials:
Isonics has developed isotopically pure silicon-28 to replace natural silicon in the production of wafers for computer chips. Our silicon-28 offers remarkably higher thermal conductivity to improve performance of high power devices. Isonics also manufactures silicon-on-insulator (SOI) wafers for micro electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) applications, optical switches, and high performance IC applications. These SOI wafers are available with natural silicon or silicon-28.

Isonics also produces enriched silicon-29 chemicals for more efficient ion implantation, and is investigating other isotopically engineered semiconductor products.

Life Sciences and Healthcare:
Isonics offers a variety of radioisotopes and stable isotopes that are used in medical diagnostics and therapy. Oxygen-18 used to make fluorine-18 for PET imaging and iodine-125 and palladium-103 used in brachytherapy seeds are our featured products. We also supply carbon-13 for use as a metabolic tracer in diagnostic breath tests. We can provide almost any other radioactive or stable isotope upon request.
