Quantum dots (QDs) are nanometer-sized semiconductor nanoparticles that emit bright, near-monochromatic light (luminesce) under light or electrical stimulation. Emission color can be tuned by choosing nanocrystal size, making QDs ideal luminophors for cutting-edge applications including ultra-thin displays, solid-state lighting, anti-counterfeit protection, and next-generation solar cells. Nanoco developed unique manufacturing methods for making multi-gram quantities of QDs reproducibly and with precise control of size, structure, and luminescence characteristics. The new core-shell Lumidots distributed by Sigma-Aldrich have luminescence colors spanning the entire visible spectrum, in addition to good stability and batch-to-batch consistency essential for research into high-technology applications.

On July 12, 2007, Ormecon’s CEO Dr. Bernhard Wessling presented the company’s new development, ORGANIC METAL NANOFINISH. This will be a new solderable surface finish for printed circuit boards. The presentation took place in a conference organized by the PCB machine manufacturer Gebr. Schmid, on occasion of the opening of their new world R+D centre in Freudenstadt / Germany. Over 300 people had followed Schmid’s invitation to the conference and the centre opening.

Ormecon’s new Nanofinish is only 50 nanometres thin, and consists of less than 10% Silver and over 90% of Ormecon’s proprietary Organic Nanometal, according to Wessling. The performance and thermal ageing resistance is said to be superior to any metal or OSP finish. Wessling cited several first external test results generated by renowned market players, e.g. Flextronics. The new process will consume less than 10% of the energy compared to other metallic finishes, and will save over 90% of (expensive and partially noble) raw materials, according to Ormecon.

Such other metallic finishes which are outperformed by Ormecon’s new nanofinish, are electroless Nickel-Gold, immersion silver and immersion tin.

KSV Instruments Ltd has more than 20 years of experience in developing and manufacturing instruments for nano- and surface science research. The main products of the company are instruments for surface/interfacial tension and contact angle measurements, as well as so called Langmuir and Langmuir-Blodgett instruments, which are used for preparing and studying nanometer thick organic layers on air-water interfaces and solid substrates.
Furthermore, KSV also manufactures more specialized characterization instruments such as Brewster Angle Microscopes for thin organic film characterization and Quartz Crystal Microbalances for very small (nanogram) mass changes at interfaces during adsorption/desorption processes or reactions taking place at the interface. KSV is very actively looking for new ideas for instruments to develop in the field of nano- and biotechnology and surface chemistry.
