Early in February ‘08 NT-MDT company promoted a training SPM NanoEducator http://www.ntmdt.com/Products/Scanning_Probe_Microscopes/product79.html compatible with Mac OS. NT-MDT is the first company who introduced the world of SPM nanoinvestigations to Mac OS users.
Single-step method settings, facile replacement of samples and user-friendly interface are the essential adjectives of a device for the research and educational process which have been replenished with Mac OS compatibility feature now.
Moreover, optical and mechanical parts of the device have been developed considerably. One can choose the most interesting regions to investigate by means of a video camera which allows to “stroll over the surface”. Details of the video picture can be emphasized in different ways owing to changeable backlight angle. Furthermore, focusing control of the video camera permits to avoid the probe damage by following the approach process more thoroughly.
NT-MDT company supplies multifunctional nanolaboratories NTEGRA and sophisticated nanotechnological facilities NanoFab to the market but focuses its attention on the development of instrumental basis for the nanoeducation now as before. Together with upgrade of the NanoEducator device its capabilities are available for the staunch supporters of Macintosh platform.

I have been a consultant, entrepreneur and teacher all of my life. Over the last 45 years, I have successfully founded and built three high technology companies - one in medical immunodiagnostics; one in manufacturing and installing microprocessor based energy conservation systems; and one in medical devices. I have had to meet weekly payrolls, the true test of an entrepreneur. I built and sold my first company, Princeton Laboratories, Inc. to Carter-Wallace, Inc. in 1974 after bringing out one of the first Over-the-Counter pregnancy tests, Answer (still in your local drugstore). I remained with Carter-Wallace as Corporate Vice President of Corporate Development until founding Aegis Systems Corporation in 1977. (Reached over $50.0 million in product line installation and sales, and sold privately 10 years later) The decade of the 1990's was devoted to wireless communication, on-line software and direct response healthcare ventures.

Before Princeton Laboratories, I was a senior technology consultant with The Diebold Group (concentrating on computer applications to businesses and forecasting technological trends and their impact on industries), and I bought and sold companies as a V.P. - Corporate Development of The Reliance Group. In parallel with my business ventures, from 1977 on, I have managed a top level business consulting company, The Aegis Group, Inc. in Princeton, NJ providing new venture, market and product analyses, corporate planning, valuation studies, and M & A advise for Fortune 500 companies and Wall Street Firms - and raising venture capital for new ventures.

I have always looking to the future and to a new world order. My interests and ventures have been on the frontiers of technology and society attempting to change the ways in which we live for the better. My interest in nanotechnology has been intense over the last three years and, having found confusion, misunderstanding and hype around my investigation of nanotechnology, I bring my over 45 years of solid venture and new technology entrepreneurial business experience, insights and analyses to NanoClarity. It is a much-needed product.

I have a BS in Electrical Engineering in computers from MIT and an MBA from Harvard. Throughout my career, I have chaired and conducted numerous seminars and panels. Recently, I have acted as an advisor to Teach for America's The New Teacher Project and to Donor's Choose, a new classroom supplemental financing initiative. In the middle 1990s, I was a Visiting Lecturer at Princeton University teaching a seminar in Technological Entrepreneurism. I am currently an Adjunct Professor in the Rutgers University Business School teaching "Managing Technology and Innovation" to MBA Students.

My passions are cosmology (a natural outgrowth of living and teaching in Princeton, N.J., the heart and soul of cosmology), tennis and lacrosse. Each spring I coach varsity lacrosse at St. Peter's Preparatory School in Jersey City, N.J.

I live with my wonderful wife and partner, Lynn Jericho, a personal counselor, lecturer and author of Ground Zero and The Human Soul; The Search for the New Ordinary Life which she and a partner published soon after 9/11 and after we had seen from our deck in Jersey City just across the Hudson River the collapse of the World Trade Center Twin Towers.

Sky High Taxes and Stifling Red Tape Can't Deter Brazil's Small Entrepreneurs

Short description

Dublauto Gaúcha is a small maker of components for the shoe industry based in the city of Ivoti

Article body

Dublauto Gaúcha is a small maker of components for the shoe industry based in the city of Ivoti, in the southernmost Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Founded in 2003, as the arm in the state of an already successful company from the southeastern Brazilian state of São Paulo, Dublauto has ten employees, produces 200,000 meters of items per month and has customers in Uruguay, Chile and Argentina.

The head of the company is engineer Evandro Wolfart. His résumé includes a prize for the invention of a product that does not stifle the feet's pores, and a project selected among 2,600 companies by the Studies and Projects Funding Body (Finep), of the Ministry of Science and Technology, under which Dublauto aims to "incorporate nanotechnology particles into textile products." To that extent, he intends to interact with universities that already do research on nanotechnology, such as Unicamp, in Campinas, interior of São Paulo.

The company cited above is a typical new Brazilian micro and small business: its structure is lean, and production is carried out according to the demand. But it grows 30% per year. And if exports totaled 6% of the company’s revenues in 2006, this year they should account for 13%.

What leads a small company to gain space like this? "Micro and small businesses need to think as big ones do: they must know how to use the Internet, to internationalize themselves, to have good distribution and to always be up-to-date with technology," explains Wolfart, who became associated with a consortium along with other small companies in the shoe sector, linked to the Brazilian Association of Shoe and Leather Components Industries (Assintecal) so as to be able to export.

Along with the group, which counts on support from the Brazilian Micro and Small Business Support Service (Sebrae) and the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (Apex-Brasil), Wolfart has even been to China on a "technological mission," to check out what the Chinese have been doing. He has also been to the United States. He came back from New York loaded with marketing ideas for his new product line.

Small Brazilian companies are becoming more dynamic, global and professional. According to the survey "Survival and Mortality Rate of Micro and Small Businesses," disclosed by the Sebrae halfway through the year, companies of those sizes have been surviving more now than they did in the past: 78% of enterprises established between 2003 and 2005 have remained in the market, as compared to 50.6% of all companies established between 2000 and 2002.

Among the reasons for such a change, the Sebrae points to a higher education level of micro-businessmen and their employees, much better trained entrepreneurs - demand for consultancy from Sebrae itself has increased five-fold in the period surveyed, compared with the previous survey (2000-2002) - as well, of course, as economical stability in Brazil.

At the time when the survey was disclosed, the president of Sebrae, Paulo Okamoto, drew a profile of the Brazilian small business entrepreneur: "He has a good education level, seeks knowledge and information so as to manage his company well, and insists on entrepreneurship, despite the obstacles that he is faced with."

Along with the consolidation of small businesses, there comes a series of positive factors for the country: the number of jobs grows, the number of exporting companies grows, and thus the economy accelerates.

Presently, according to data supplied by the Brazilian Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade, micro and small businesses - the concept of "small" being liable to include medium-sized companies, depending on revenues - account for 20% of the country's GDP.

They represent 99% of formal companies in operation, 55% of formal jobs and 51% of exporter companies. On the other hand, they account for only 2.7% of Brazilian exports.

When it comes to the informal market, micro and small businesses show even greater strength: according to data disclosed by the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics (IBGE) in 2005, there are 10.3 million micro and small businesses in informality - twice as much as the formal ones (4.91 million).

Of those informal companies, 33% are in the repair trade and services sectors, 17% are in civil construction and 16% are in the processing and extraction industries. Informal companies employ a total of 13.8 million workers.

For the time being, neither the General Law for Micro and Small Companies, passed in 2006, nor the "Super Simple" tax, passed in 2007, have managed to lure this mass into formality. The reasons for that are varied, but they are the same ones that lead formal companies to go bankrupt, or stop many others from growing: high taxes, bad management and impossible financing.

The global market for nanoparticles in electronic, magnetic and optoelectronic applications will be worth $521.9 million in 2007

According to a new technical market research report, NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS: ELECTRONIC/MAGNETIC/OPTOELECTRONIC (NAN017F) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for nanoparticles in electronic, magnetic and optoelectronic applications will be worth $521.9 million in 2007. This is expected to increase to over $1.7 billion by 2012, a compound average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 16.5%.

The market is broken down into applications of electronic, magnetic and optoelectronic applications. Of these, electronic applications hold the largest share of the market. Worth an estimated $433.7 million in 2007, this segment is expected to be worth $894.6 million in 2012, a CAGR of 15.6%.

The second largest segment in 2007, cosmetic applications are expected to decline at an average rate of almost 19% per year and, as a result, their market value is projected to be $25.4 million in 2012. Optoelectronic applications’ share should grow from 3.1% to 18% between 2006 and 2012 and reach $201.4 million.

Within these three broad application segments, several specific applications stand out; chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) was the largest market for nanoparticles in 2006, followed by magnetic recording media and multi-layer ceramic capacitors. However, consumption of nanoparticles for magnetic recording media is projected to decline, while new applications such as light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and quantum optical devices are growing rapidly. As a result, magnetic recording media are expected to drop to sixth place by 2012, behind CMP, quantum optical devices, multilayer ceramic capacitors, LEDs and advanced displays, and fiber optic cable.

Three types of nanoparticles (silica, iron oxide, and alumina) together accounted for more than 85% of the electronic, magnetic, and optoelectronic market in 2006. While alumina consumption is projected to grow faster than the market as a whole, silica and particularly iron oxide are expected to underperform the market and consequently lose market share. Meanwhile ceria and other oxides and quantum dots are expected to increase their market share significantly.

The market for organic electronics materials will be worth $4.9 billion in 2012 surging to $15.8 billion in 2015

Article body

Glen Allen, Virginia: The market for organic electronics materials will be worth $4.9 billion in 2012 surging to $15.8 billion in 2015, according to a new report from NanoMarkets, an industry analyst firm based here. The report, “Organic Harvest: Opportunities in Organic Electronic Materials” is the next in a series that analyzes the market for the semiconductors, conductors, dielectrics and substrates that will be used in the growing organic electronics industry. Details about the report can be found at www.nanomarkets.net. The firm has also released a blog entry that provides additional commentaries from the report at www.nanotopblog.com. Report summaries are available for members of the press upon request.

From the Report:

· By 2015, NanoMarkets estimates that 80 percent of organic electronics materials will be sold into three applications: RFID, display backplanes and OLED lighting and displays. By then RFID will be the largest application accounting for $6.9 billion in materials sales, with today’s dominant application – OLEDs accounting for $5.6 billion. NanoMarkets expect RFID to overtake OLEDs as the largest consumer of organic electronics materials by 2012.

· Today’s organic semiconductor materials are inadequate for the opportunity that lies ahead. Besides their limits on performance, many of them are only available in small quantities. However, NanoMarkets believes that new kinds of organic semiconductor materials such as rubrene and hybrid materials including formulations with carbon nanotubes are going to enable the market to achieve $4.9 billion in revenues by 2015 as needed improvements in electron mobilities, switching speeds and environmental stability are attained.

· To be successful, organic electronics will have to emulate the traditional semiconductor industry and invent an organic version of CMOS with its own stable materials sets. To make this happen materials companies must offer commercial quantities of n-type semiconductors and organic dielectrics.

· The substrate business will grow to $6.9 billion in sales by 2015 with the majority of these substrates of the flexible type and specially prepared for organic electronics through novel forms of barrier coatings and reduced surface roughness.

· As the organic electronics industry starts to ship devices in quantity, material suppliers will have to adjust their formulations for their offerings to work in large-scale manufacturing plants. These plants now seem more likely to use versions of traditional evaporation, coating and flexo printing, rather than the much touted ink-jet approaches. Suppliers will have to meet the specialized requirements for viscosity, volatility, etc., that the emerging organic electronics industry will require.

About the Report:

NanoMarkets' new report, "Organic Harvest: Opportunities in Organic Electronic Materials” provides a complete analysis of the new opportunities to sell materials to the organic electronics industry. It discusses and quantifies the markets for semiconductors, conductors, dielectrics and (glass, plastic and paper) substrates that will be used by the industry over the next eight years in various applications including display backplanes, organic photovoltaics, OLEDs, sensors, smartcards, and games and toys. The report includes detailed eight-year forecasts of organic electrics markets broken out by applications and device type as well as strategic profiles of 20 leading firms active in this market.

About NanoMarkets:

Nanotube-Producing Bacteria Show Manufacturing Promise (USR)

Article body

Two engineers at the University of California, Riverside are part of a binational team that has found semiconducting nanotubes produced by living bacteria - a discovery that could help in the creation of a new generation of nanoelectronic devices.

The research team believes this is the first time nanotubes have been shown to be produced by biological rather than chemical means. It opens the door to the possibility of cheaper and more environmentally friendly manufacture of electronic materials.

Study results appear in today's issue of the early edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

The team, including Nosang V. Myung, associate professor of chemical and environmental engineering in the Bourns College of Engineering, and his postdoctoral researcher Bongyoung Yoo, found the bacterium Shewanella facilitates the formation of arsenic-sulfide nanotubes that have unique physical and chemical properties not produced by chemical agents.

"We have shown that a jar with a bug in it can create potentially useful nanostructures," Myung said. "Nanotubes are of particular interest in materials science because the useful properties of a substance can be finely tuned according to the diameter and the thickness of the tubes."

The whole realm of electronic devices which power our world, from computers to solar cells, today depend on chemical manufacturing processes which use tremendous energy, and leave behind toxic metals and chemicals. Myung said a growing movement in science and engineering is looking for ways to produce semiconductors in more ecologically friendly ways.

Two members of the research team, Hor Gil Hur and Ji-Hoon Lee from Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST), Korea, first discovered something unexpected happening when they attempted to remediate arsenic contamination using the metal-reducing bacterium Shewanella. Myung, who specializes in electro-chemical material synthesis and device fabrication, was able to characterize the resulting nano-material.

The photoactive arsenic-sulfide nanotubes produced by the bacteria behave as metals with electrical and photoconductive properties. The researchers report that these properties may also provide novel functionality for the next generation of semiconductors in nano- and opto-electronic devices.

In a process that is not yet fully understood, the Shewanella bacterium secretes polysacarides that seem to produce the template for the arsenic sulfide nanotubes, Myung explained. The practical significance of this technique would be much greater if a bacterial species were identified that could produce nanotubes of cadmium sulfide or other superior semiconductor materials, he added.

"This is just a first step that points the way to future investigation," he said. "Each species of Shewanella might have individual implications for manufacturing properties."

Article body

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.-Research at UCLA sponsored by Semiconductor Research Corporation (SRC), the world’s leading university research consortium for semiconductors and related technologies, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) celebrated today CAD techniques that will facilitate advances for multiple technology generations. The resulting optimization methods can provide improvements equivalent to the investment of billions of dollars in fabrication equipment costs.

“This is a huge opportunity for the industry as optimal placement of circuits in the design process will deliver scaling of semiconductors that is independent of feature size, providing Moore’s Law progress at less cost than other options,” said Professor Jason Cong, chair of the UCLA Computer Sciences Department (www.ucla.edu). “Closing such a large optimality gap will be equivalent to several technology generation advancements. In comparison, the introduction of copper interconnects was equivalent to a 30% interconnect length reduction, and so is each generation of device scaling, but each requires a multi-billion dollar investment.”

For the past 40 years, transistor and interconnect scaling has been the required solution for maintaining continuous incremental improvements to semiconductors. With the state-of-art chip features now down to 45nm, scaling is limited by both physical and economic challenges. For most companies, fabrication factories become too expensive beyond the 30nm process, although feature sizes are projected to shrink several more generations below that.

“We’re running out of gas when forced to count on traditional performance gains. The implications of new software that can give us the equivalent of one technology node in die size and cost savings is great progress,” said Dr. William Joyner, director of CAD and Test Sciences at SRC. “UCLA research has demonstrated such possibility, even on a very well studied and classical problem such as circuit placement. The UCLA team’s persistence has paid off by proving there’s room for robust gains independent of further scaling.”

Focusing on benefits derived from reduction in wire length gap during research begun in 2003, Cong and the UCLA team demonstrated significant ‘optimality gaps’ among even the best available circuit placement algorithms at that time. The gaps ranged from 70 to as much as 150 percent away from the optimal solutions, in terms of the total interconnect length. (http://cadlab.cs.ucla.edu/~pubbench) Closing such a large optimality gap is equivalent to several technology generation advancements. Reflecting today’s news, SRC funded a circuit placement tool at UCLA which thus far has demonstrated capability of 30 percent improvement, equivalent to one technology generation. Further progress is expected.

To achieve this gain, there are two techniques: (1) a multi-level or multi-scale sequence of steps to iteratively reduce the problem complexity and then project the solution of a coarser problem to that of a finer problem until a solution to the original problem is obtained, and (2) application of sophisticated, constrained non-linear optimization at each step. Success of the techniques resulted from close collaboration among research in computer science and mathematics by Professor Cong and Professor Tony Chan, leader of UCLA’s applied mathematics group. (http://cadlab.cs.ucla.edu/cpmo/)

Highlights of the circuit placement tool and method are documented in a book published this month, titled “Modern Circuit Placement – Best Practices and Results,” edited by Cong and Dr. Gi-Joon Nam of IBM Austin Research Laboratory.

“This technique improvement is like laying out a new city that is much more efficient while still maintaining minimum setbacks,” said Dale Edwards, program manager at SRC.

“The success of this research demonstrates how collaboration between CAD and mathematics can produce results that far outperform the state of the art,” said Dr. Sankar Basu, NSF program director and a joint sponsor of the research (www.nsf.gov). “We hope this example will inspire more CAD researchers to cross boundaries and seek interdisciplinary collaborations.”

As chipmakers gain from their use of such design tools and technologies, consumers ultimately will benefit from the higher levels of integration and performance improvements without the historical costs associated with the continuing shrinkage of chips. Per its charter, SRC will continue to take a lead role in collaborating on enhancements brought about by academic research in efficient algorithms, tools and processes associated with semiconductor design and manufacturing.

About SRC-GRC

New technologies are today's reality. They're are fascinating, mind-expanding, challenging, provocative, and riveting. They continue to positively impact the world in which we live, creating new wealth and reshaping economic and social policy.

Having clear messages and public relations programs in place that enable you - today’s technologists, scientists, pundits, and executives - to distinctly articulate your vision will not only enable you to become industry leaders and advance your technologies, but provides your organization with a voice in the marketplace of ideas, facts, and viewpoints to aid informed public debate.

CameronWeeks Public Relations has perfected the art and science of building relationships between an organization and its key publics. Our practices have the ability to take your technology from obscurity to prominence - creating important visibility and generating deal flow.
