MOSCOW: A Russian university has bought one of the world's most powerful supercomputers, the first time that such sophisticated technology has been exported to the former Soviet Union, its maker, IBM, said Thursday.

The Moscow State University has selected a Blue Gene device capable of 27.8 trillion operations a second to use in research on nanotechnology and scientific applications like modeling the heart, International Business Machines said.

"This agreement with IBM heralds a new era of supercomputing in Russia," said Viktor Sadovnichiy, rector of the university, in a statement.

The world's most powerful supercomputer is a Blue Gene device owned by the U.S. Department of Energy and used at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to model the aging of the U.S. nuclear weapons stockpile and predict potential problems.

IBM said the supercomputer sold to Moscow university would be among the 50 most powerful supercomputers in the world but had received an export license from U.S. authorities and would be used "purely for scientific research."

The Department of Computational Mathematics at the Moscow university paid around $5 million for two racks of the supercomputer, which can run 2,600 times faster than the fastest home PC and should be operational by April 2008.

Because of advances in technology, each rack of the supercomputer is about the size of a American home refrigerator and additional racks can be added as requirements grow.

The Blue Gene version used by the U.S. government is almost 20 times more powerful than the one bought by Moscow.

Large revolution, but on a tiny scale

By thinking small, a St. Paul start-up has put its nanotechnology on a world stage.

Article body

As chief executive of Cima NanoTech Inc., Jon Brodd keeps an active global itinerary. The St. Paul-based start-up operates a research-and-development center in Israel, and manufacturing and marketing operations out of Japan. ¶ Today, Brodd embarks on perhaps his most high-profile trip: Davos, Switzerland, the site of next week's World Economic Forum, where top political and business leaders including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and Microsoft founder Bill Gates will discuss everything from poverty to global warming.

The forum recently named Cima a "Technology Pioneer," a distinction given to 39 companies around the world this year whose innovative technologies contain the "potential to have a substantial long-term impact on business and society in the future." Past winners include Google, Mozilla and Napster.

Founded in 2002 using Israeli technology, Cima manufactures materials that are used to make plasma television screens, solar cells and radio frequency identification tags in a way that's cheaper and greener. Cima has raised $24 million, mostly from investors in South Korea and Japan, home to major electronic manufacturers such as Panasonic and Sony. The venture-capital backed company is in the "pre-revenue stage."

Cima's technology is "both basic and revolutionary," said Ataru Onuma, senior managing director of Nikko Antfactory, a Japanese venture capital firm and one of Cima's largest investors. "It is not easy to copy."

Broadly defined, nanotechnology is the ability to manipulate matter on a molecular level. Substances behave differently in smaller sizes, which means scientists can alter certain chemical, biological and physical properties to produce everything from stain-resistant clothing and lighter tennis racquets to powerful microchips and sensors.

From small things, big money

Products incorporating nanotechnology generated more than $50 billion in sales in 2006, according to New York consulting firm Lux Research Inc. Venture capitalists poured $699 million into nanotechnology that year, up 10 percent from 2005, Lux said.

Wall Street is also taking notice. In November, Minneapolis-based Piper Jaffray & Co. helped underwrite the $112.7 million initial public offering of Nanosphere Inc., a company that uses gold nanoparticles to develop genetic tests that are faster and cheaper than competing products.

Cima's "self-assembling" nanoparticles will help electronics manufacturers save money and reduce waste, according to Brodd, a former 3M Co. executive.

Normally, manufacturers make plasma screens by covering entire pieces of plastic with copper, then using acids to wash away 90 percent of the copper, forming a fine grid pattern that conducts electricity, transmits light and shields consumers from electromagnetic radiation. But the process is expensive, time-consuming and produces waste that can't be recycled, Brodd said.

Cima's process involves spraying or coating special silver nanoparticles onto glass or plastic. Once the film is air-dried and heated, the silver nanoparticles automatically form patterns and shapes that accomplish the same tasks as copper grids, but without the waste.

Brodd says the technology presents significant benefits for manufacturers of plasma televisions that want to cut costs in the face of shrinking profit margins.

A sharp and persistent decline in flat-panel TV prices has triggered a financial meltdown in the consumer electronics industry. Retail chains and manufacturers that initially prospered from consumers' desires for the sleek sets now face a flooded market, thanks to intense competition from discounters.

"The suppliers don't really care that we have nanotechnology," Brodd said. "They care that we developed a high-performance, low-cost coating. There is real intense pressure to drive down the costs."

But the long-term environmental benefits of Cima's technology -- the ability to do more with less without generating waste -- is what caught the eye of the World Economic Forum.

"At the end of the day, it's always about cost" for manufacturers, Brodd said. "Green is nice, but it's not enough to open doors. But I think longer-term, the environmental impact -- or should I say the lack of environmental impact we are going to have -- is going be much more important. You are seeing consumers already today, almost unprecedented, requesting green technology."

Microvision (NASDAQ:MVIS), developer of light-scanning technologies for display and imaging products, will unveil at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week an advanced prototype of the first handheld, battery-powered, ‘plug-and-play’ projector based on the company’s single micro-mirror laser scanning display technology.

Code-named SHOW™, Microvision’s stand-alone pico projector intended for mobile device applications, is powered by the company’s proprietary ultra-miniature PicoP™ display engine. Microvision will preview the PDA-sized, fully self-contained, battery operated, full-color laser projector to select global OEMs, mobile carriers, content providers, development partners and members of the media.

SHOW connects directly to laptops, mobile phones, portable media players (PMPs), digital cameras and other mobile devices to project large, high-resolution images and video onto any surface. The images projected can range anywhere from 12 inches (30 cm) to 100 inches (2.5 m) in size depending upon the projection distance and are always in focus. The production version of the device is expected to offer approximately 2.5 hours of continuous battery life, sufficient to watch a full-length movie without a need for recharging.

Microvision says that SHOW can project a widescreen, WVGA (848 X 480 pixels), DVD quality image — offering a very different experience from the tiny 2-inch display solutions available today on various portable devices. Designed for viewing high-quality projected images in a variety of controlled lighting environments, SHOW offers more than five times the resolution compared with competing miniature projectors that typically only offer QVGA resolution (320 x 240 pixels).

At the heart of SHOW is Microvision’s PicoP display engine, measuring close to 5 cc in volume and approximately 7 mm thick (approximately the size of a thin mint chocolate candy). Microvision envisions the PicoP display engine being used not only in stand-alone accessory products like SHOW, but also embedded directly into mobile consumer products.

“Consumers want better display solutions that will enrich their experience in watching TV, videos and movies, in playing games, and in browsing the web from their cell phones and other mobile devices,” points out Alexander Tokman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Microvision. “While mobile multi-media subscription services are on the rise, handset manufacturers, content providers and service providers view tiny cell phone displays as a barrier to stronger consumer adoption of their products and services. With Microvision’s SHOW you could view and share everything ranging from YouTube videos, MSN newscasts, and Google search results to PowerPoint presentations, feature-length films, and family photos in a large, full-color, hi-resolution format instead of a 2-inch, QVGA display.”

“SHOW is a significant milestone for Microvision and is proof that our technology is maturing according to plan and is close to being market-ready. Microvision’s low-profile and low-power design, supported by leading supply chain partners, is very attractive to numerous mobile handset device manufactures, carriers and content providers. We believe that this milestone is meaningful not only for our company but for the industry at large,” concluded Tokman.

Microvision’s advanced prototypes of SHOW will be available in limited quantities to select OEM and carrier partners for customer feedback and applications development in the first half of 2008. The release of a commercial product is targeted for the end of 2008. Demonstrations of SHOW will be held during CES 2008, and again at the 3GSM conference in Barcelona in February 2008.

Research 26/12/2007 15:23:00 Business Wire Printed electronics hold the potential to be a game-changer in a wide variety of end markets, according to a new study from ABI Research.
Innovative printing techniques have the capability to facilitate high volume, low cost manufacturing of electronics components, which will enable new applications that were not previously addressable with traditional electronics manufacturing techniques.
While this market is currently in its infancy, ABI Research forecasts that printed electronics will see very high growth rates through 2012 and beyond.
"For many end markets the first products are becoming commercially available now, and market realization will be dictated by fulfillment of the promise of printing capabilities at a very low price point," says research director Michael Liard.
"It will take some time before printing and cost are optimized and this will certainly vary from market segment to market segment in terms of what customers will accept." This new ABI Research study presents a detailed assessment of the state of the printed electronics landscape today, with market opportunity analysis across the optoelectronics, large area electronics and power generation/management sectors to assess drivers, barriers, key applications, materials and technologies, manufacturing and key industry competition.
Within these sectors, ABI Research has further segmented the market applications for printed electronics as follows: displays, solid state lighting, electronic paper and displays, transistors, integrated circuits, batteries, and photovoltaics.
The greatest market penetration by printing technologies to date has been in displays and lighting for portable electronics.
Many of the technologies under development are not quite ready for prime time yet and initial applications are targeting niche markets.
"The most interesting applications involve leveraging printing for entirely new applications, especially those that can provide added value through needed functionality, industry cost savings, security and resource conservation," notes Liard.
"There has been public, government and financial investment interest in developing alternative energy solutions.
Applying printing technologies to solar cell manufacturing, for example, can result in better, more efficient materials utilization and manufacturing for greater return on energy investment and capital expenditure." Long URLs in this release may need to be copied/pasted into your Internet browser s address field.
Remove the extra space if one exists.
IDGLOBAL Lauded as One of the “Hottest Technologies” in the Fight against Counterfeiting

IDGLOBAL (Pink Sheets:IDGJ) Following on the heels of the largest counterfeiting bust in Canadian history, IDGLOBAL’s Nano-Molecular Marking™ technology was lauded as being “one of the hottest technologies” in anti-counterfeiting.

On December 1, 2007, police executed criminal code search warrants and seized counterfeit goods including footwear, purses, wallets, clothing, jewelry, sunglasses and luggage. Eight people in the Toronto area face thirty-six charges in an estimated $10 million counterfeit goods investigation in what is considered one of the biggest busts of its kind in North America. What is significant about this case, however, is that instead of going after storefronts, this counterfeiting operation targeted suppliers.

“We found thousands of unassembled Nike and Puma boxes,” commented Lorne Lipkus, founding partner of Kestenberg Siegal Lipkus LLP (http://www.ksllaw.com). “They then had cases of stickers or labels that go on the front of the box. There are fakes that look so authentic that it’s difficult to tell them apart from the real thing. In some cases even the brand owners have a hard time telling them apart. In order to protect their brand, more companies are spending money on brand protection technology, which goes into, on or around an authentic product to assist in authenticating it. This could include chemical ink, holograms, 3D bar codes or micro-thread with writing on it (which you’d need a magnifying glass to see).”

“One of the hottest technologies right now is synthetic DNA, developed by a company called IDGLOBAL in Kelowna, BC. I have several clients now using that product,” says Lipkus. “It’s covert. People can’t copy it — you know 100 per cent whether it’s your product or not.”

SAN JOSE, Calif.--Force10 Networks®, the pioneer in building and securing reliable networks,

Article body

SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Force10 Networks®, the pioneer in building and securing reliable networks, today announced that it provides the high performance foundation for 41 of the fastest supercomputers in the world, including six of the top 15, according to the 30th edition of the TOP500 list. Highest on the list of supercomputers that the Force10 TeraScale E-Series® family of switch/routers anchors is German research center Forschungszentrum Jülich’s newest supercomputer, which ranks second in the world and is the most powerful in Europe.

“More and more of the world’s fastest supercomputers are relying on Force10’s TeraScale E-Series to provide the industry’s highest density and resiliency,” said Sachi Sambandan, vice president of engineering at Force10 Networks. “As supercomputers grow more powerful it is increasingly important to minimize the bottlenecks that can occur, and that’s where we provide the necessary scalability and reliability to continually expand the frontiers of what these machines can achieve.”

Force10 powers three of the top six IBM BlueGene supercomputers at Forschungszentrum Jülich (#2), the New York Center for Computational Sciences at Stony Brook/Brookhaven National Laboratory (#10) and the Computational Center for Nanotechnology Innovations at Renssalear Polytechnic Institute (#12). Additionally, four of the five fastest Dell cluster computers — at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (#14), Sandia National Laboratories (#18), Texas Advanced Computing Center (#22) and the Louisiana Optical Networking Initiative (#32) — utilize the TeraScale E-Series to build reliable Gigabit and 10 Gigabit Ethernet networks and achieve the throughput necessary to attain these rankings.

With research environments and national laboratories demanding more computational power, supercomputers continue to increase in size. The Force10 TeraScale E-Series provides the reliability and scalability that are needed to optimize supercomputer performance and enhance state-of-the-art of research and analysis.

The Top500 project was started in 1993 to provide a reliable basis for tracking and detecting trends in high performance computing. Supercomputers are ranked twice a year based on performance. The current list is available at www.top500.org.

MagiQ Technologies is a pioneer in converting quantum information processing opportunities into real-world implementations. MagiQ has assembled a group of scientific collaborators to provide the company with early insight into the latest developments in QIP research. MagiQ has also assembled an advisory board of leaders from academia, business and government to provide ongoing outside counsel throughout the product identification and development process.

MagiQ’s mission is to unlock the benefits of quantum information processing (QIP) for organizations seeking competitive advantage through technology. We view QIP as a group of revolutionary technologies with enormous potential to dramatically affect the future of computing. We believe QIP will revolutionize the 21st century the same way that the steam engine, electricity, and transistors transformed the 19th and 20th centuries.*

We are actively pursuing R&D initiatives that commercially exploit QIP in the areas of quantum communication and quantum cryptography. At the same time, we’re working on quantum technologies that bring us closer to the long-term goal of large scale quantum computing.

Colossal Storage knows the invention and patents by Michael E. Thomas on a technique for changing matter at the molecular level is one of the World's only NEW enabling technologies having hundreds of electro-optic applications in which a few are discussed on our other applications of Patented Technology webpage .
Atomic Holographic Nanotechnology will allow for the first time a functional method for programmable molecular lenses that will allow incoming light to be rejected, modified internally, or allowed to pass un altered thru a transparent lens known as disk, tape, card, drum, film, plate, etc.

By being able to use plasmonic physics to program optical lenses many applications based on light and color can be developed like holographic data storage, bio-terror detection devices, optical electronics, OLED displays, and spintronic data storage. Michael E. Thomas has invented and patented a mankind first and only concept for non-contact UV photon induced electric field poling of ferroelectric non-linear photonic bandgap crystals which offers the possibility of controlling and manipulating light within a UV/Deep Blue frequency of 1 nm to 400 nm.

The small size of ferroelectric transparent structures makes it possible to fabricate nano-optical devices like volume holographic storage having both positive and negative index of refraction that will allow molecular particles of an atomic size to be modified, controlled, and changed to perform a specific function, desired task, used for low cost accurate chemical / biological matter detection, and reprogrammed to accept new non-volatile data and molecular functions.

Subsequently, the company attracted considerable attention in the venture capital community, closing its first round of funding late in 2001. ZettaCores venture backers include Draper Fisher Jurvetson, Oxford Biosciences, Radius Venture Partners, Access Venture Partners, Garrett Capital/BancOne and Stanford University.

ZettaCore is an attractive partner for the semiconductor industry. Our focus has always been on creating technology and product platforms that can be used broadly for memory applications and on ensuring that adoption of our technology can occur in existing and planned semiconductor fabrication facilities using reliable and established processes. Our technology has the flexibility to be used across a wide spectrum of products where silicon semiconductor memory is used. Initial target markets are in areas where the potential for significant density improvement, reduced cost, and reduced power demand will have the most value. This includes portable devices such as laptops, PDAs, cell phones and cameras, as well as desktop and server computers.

Nantero, Inc. is building a high density nonvolatile random access memory chip, which can replace DRAM (dynamic RAM), SRAM (static RAM), flash memory, and ultimately hard disk storage--in other words a universal memory chip suitable for countless existing and new applications in the field of electronics. The target markets in aggregate exceed $100B in revenue per year. Nantero's product is called NRAM (Nanotube-based/ Nonvolatile RAM), developed using proprietary concepts and methods derived from leading-edge research in nanotechnology.

Nantero has created multiple prototype devices, including an array of ten billion suspended nanotube junctions on a single silicon wafer. Nantero's design for NRAM involves the use of suspended nanotube junctions as memory bits, with the "up" position representing bit zero and the "down" position representing bit one. Bits are switched between states through the application of electrical fields. The wafer was produced using only standard semiconductor processes, maximizing compatibility with existing semiconductor factories.

Long description

There were over three billion biochemical assays performed in the United States, European Union and Japan in 2000 that cost over $24 billion(B) to perform. Most were done in 96 or 384 well plates in 50-299 microliter(uL) volumes. These relatively large volumes necessitate the creation of extensive infrastructures for generating, storing and disposing of the required reagents and labware. Attendant problems include evaporation, air bubbles, long incubation times and reagent stability all of which limit boththroughput and quality of data.

Nanolytics' proprietary technology eliminates all of these problems. We provide an open platform for controlling precisely the dispensing, movement and positioning of nanoliter scale droplets (nanodroplets). Theextant platform consists of a biochip containing 10,000 "virtual" wells each of which defines a nanodroplet, and a computer-controlled microactuator to move and position the nanodroplets independently. "Open platform" means it is compatible with any current assay protocol, it is capable of running multiple protocols on the same chip and it can be reconfigured "on-the-fly". The use of nanodroplets means that compared to that of traditional plates, assay density is increased by 50-200 fold, incubation times are decreased by 100 fold, and all reagents can be decreased by 1000 fold. These advantages mean that assay throughput is increased 5,000-20,000 fold. Coupled with the fact that our platform is compatible with existing assay facilities and instrumentation, it is clear that Nanolytics has the ability to change dramatically the way all assays will be done for the foreseeable future.

D-Wave Systems Inc. (D-Wave) is building a new type of ultra-fast computational machine-a superconducting quantum computer-whose speed will be far in excess of any current or future silicon-based processors.

The primary application for D-Wave's technology-and the company's mission-is to provide a platform for simulation, modeling and design of nanoscale products and processes. It is known and recognized that prediction of the properties and behaviour of very small (nanoscale) systems is not possible using conventional computer technology.

In the four years since its founding in 1999, D-Wave has laid the groundwork for turning this ambitious vision into reality. Through its collaborative R&D network D-Wave has access to more than 90 world-class research scientists and a unique combination of specialized fabrication and testing equipment, accessing an investment of hundreds of millions of dollars.
D-Wave operates with business discipline and is focused on future commercial applications. Its Board and management include senior executives with proven track records building companies, financial and technology backgrounds, and extensive experience with technology companies in early phases of development.
