The Asia Pacific Nanotechnology Forum (APNF) is a unique platform for networking across the Asia Pacific region between governments, developing industry, and the venture capital market.

The Asia Pacific Nanotechnology Forum is an independent non-government, not for profit organization, which facilitates the coordination of Nanotechnology development and programs and cross regional collaborations among Government policy makers, industry , R&D institutions, and leading researchers.

With support from governments from across the Asia Pacific and major industry, the APNF was formed as the Asia Pacific centered catalyst and thought leader in Nanotechnology and related development areas. The Asia Pacific Nanotechnology Forum is the leading facilitator of the Asia Nanotechnology Forum and the Asia Nanotechnology Business Alliance, and publisher of the quarterly APNF News Journal.

The Asia Pacific Nanotechnology Forum hosts the Annual APNF Conference and numerous country local symposia, workshops, seminars, and exhibitions. Since its inauguration in February 2002, the APNF maintained a key role as supporting organization of a number of initiatives and major Nanotechnology events in Asia, Europe, and the USA.

The NANO-MNRF is the peak Australian facility for nanometric analysis of the structure and chemistry of materials in both physical and biological systems. NANO operates and maintains state-of-the-art facilities for the characterisation and manipulation of matter at the atomic and molecular scale. Synthetic Bone Graft for Biomedical Load- bearing Applications

This new material and its production technique represent a significant advance on the materials currently available for bone graft and spinal implant technology.

The new product, BioAlmog, is a high-strength bone-graft material derived from hydroxyapatite. It has innovative features that give it specific advantages in its mechanical properties, in comparison to other commercially available hydroxyapatite products.

These advantages are due to the conversion treatment, and the nano-coating with carbonate apatite, which uses a novel sol-gel technique. The new bone-graft technology will be of great social benefit, particularly for sufferers of arthritis and related disabling diseases.

Potential uses for the technology include bone-grafting under load-bearing conditions, such as long bones and the spine, and bioactive coatings for artificial joints, such as total hip replacements, knee and dental implants.

When you consider that an estimated 500 million people worldwide have various forms of arthritis, you can see the great potential of BioAlmog to help these people. We developed this technology at UTS, Sydney and are collaborating with UNSW and a university in the UK.

Qucor Pty Ltd is a start-up company activated in 2003 to commercialise pathway technologies developed from quantum computing research undertaken in Australia. Qucor is backed by the very substantial technical expertise and infrastructure of Australia’s Centre for Quantum Computer Technology, headquartered at the University of New South Wales and headed by Professor Robert Clark.

Qucor works in atom-scale information technology. It connects extreme nanotechnology - work at the level of individual atoms and photons - with the emerging demands of the semiconductor and optoelectronics industries. Qucor undertakes technology demonstrations with industry, to apply single-atom and single-photon expertise to creating the foundations for the next generation of IT products.

Nearer-term products are expected to emerge in the area of security, first as single photon sources and detectors, then as Quantum Key Distribution systems. In the medium term, single atom control has application to sensor manufacture, precise doping of transistors, and could underpin novel customised semiconductor devices. Over the medium to longer term, “few qubit” devices are expected to emerge, exploiting the quantum physical properties of individual atoms. First applications are most likely to exploit their unique advantages to enable secure data transmission in the financial and entertainment industry sectors.

At UTS we are researching artificial cell membranes that will improve the bio-compatibility of implanted tissue and cells, improve the function of these implants by bypassing the bodys immune system and allow medicines to be targeted specifically to the affected area of the body. The membranes will also provide novel platforms for advanced nanosensors. We are also looking at super-strength nano-grained metals and ceramic materials, nano-coatings and surface texturing for improving prosthetics and implants.

In the area of Energy-Efficient Nano-materials we are researching nanoparticle films which will reduce solar heat gain through windows without dimming the view, dark coloured paints that reflect the heat, new refrigeration methods and a range of daylighting, decorative and safety lighting applications. We are also looking at energy storage, desalination and low-pressure water filtration using Nanotechnology.
