IMRA America, Inc. is a world leader in the research and development, manufacturing, and application of ultrafast and short-pulsed fiber lasers.

The idea of a global IMRA research and development network was born in Japan and championed by Mr. Minoru Toyoda, the Honorary Advisor to the All Aisin Group. Aisin is Japan's largest, and one of the world's top ten manufacturers of automotive related components.

The IMRA network is dedicated to the creative research and innovative development of key technologies for future industrial applications. The company's international exchange of advanced technologies successfully implements Mr. Toyoda's visionary philosophy of "World Harmony Through the Development and Sharing of Science and Technology" (1985).

Our first facility - originally IMRA, "Institut Minoru de Recherche Avancée", and now IMRA Europe S.A. - opened in Valbonne/Nice, France, in 1986. Since then it has expanded to include additional sites in the United Kingdom and Germany.

IMRA America was established in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1990. Today IMRA America is a globally active company.

Research, development, prototyping, manufacturing and marketing and sales for ultrafast fiber lasers are carried out at our Ann Arbor Headquarters. The Femtolite™ ultrafast fiber laser series, the first IMRA America product line, is manufactured in Kariya, Japan, at a facility close to the headquarters of IMRA's parent company, Aisin Seiki.

Since 2004, the FCPA µJewel™ ultrafast laser series has been produced in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Other laser models and accessories are being added to the manufacturing line-up to keep up with market demand.

The lasers are distributed worldwide through our own sales forces in the United States and Japan and with an international network of sales representatives.

IMRA America has developed an intellectual property portfolio of more than 80 national and international patents.

In 2000, we established our Applications Research Laboratory (ARL) in Fremont, California. There we collaborate on pulsed laser micromachining applications with the semiconductor, display, as well as biomedical, medical device, and other high-tech manufacturing industries. A similar facility at the headquarters in Ann Arbor opened in 2005.

Nanotechnology and Microfabrication Workshop

Location: UM North Campus, Ann Arbor, MI

Please note the new schedule: October 24th and 25th 2007

This is a 2-day workshop held at the Michigan Nanofabrication Facility at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. It will provide an introduction to micro and nanofabrication technologies for industrial engineers and researchers. No previous microfabrication experience is required.
Note: Openings are also available for researchers from academia and large businesses.
The agenda includes lectures on:
MEMS and microfabrication/micromachining technique
Deep RIE
Wafer bonding
Nanoelectronic devices
Nanofabrication and photonic applications
MNF capabilities and how to complete a project at the MNF.

For each technique or technology, we will review:
Physics and Technology
Equipment
Applications
Capabilities of the MNF

The workshop will include both classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory activities.  Space is limited so early registration is recommended.
Registration fee for non-academic attendees is $450, which includes attendance to the lectures and cleanroom lab sessions, lecture/lab notes, breakfast/lunch and a $300 credit towards MNF user fees if the attendee subsequently becomes a user of the MNF.

Registration fee for academic attendees is $225, which includes attendance to the lectures and cleanroom lab sessions, lecture/lab notes, breakfast/lunch and a $150 credit towards MNF user fees.

The technology is effective against bacteria, virus, fungi, and spores. Because of this and the lack of toxicity, the antimicrobial nanoemulsions enable commercial product applications in the consumer and pharmaceutical OTC and Rx markets. In 1998, we formed the Center for Biologic Nanotechnology at the University of Michigan. At its core, the Center was formed to take advantage of the advances in the basic sciences and engineering and apply them to biological systems for medical applications. Participants came with an extremely wide range of expertise: optics, chemistry, biology, applied physics, and computation. The Center has successfully competed for funding from a variety of sources, including the NIH Unconventional Innovations Program and NASA.
Over this period, the interdisciplinary collaboration has proven very successful. A tremendous amount of knowledge has been generated and, equally important, a large range of technology has been developed. Examples include examination of nanoparticle interactions with membranes, synthesis and characterization of novel nanoparticles for targeted cancer treatment and MRI contrast enhancement, and development of minimally invasive two-photon fiber optic probes for detection and diagnosis of cancer. In each of these cases, the success of our investigation required the interdisciplinary skills provided by a team of researchers drawn from across campus.

A rate-limiting step has been to facilitate productive interaction of these diverse scientific disciplines. To both recognize the success of the Center and improve the interaction of our multidisciplinary team of chemists, physicists, engineers and biologists collaborating on nanoscience in biology and medicine, the university expanded the Center into the "Michigan Nanotechnology Institute for Medicine and Biological Sciences" (M-NIMBS) on April 21, 2005. James R. Baker Jr., M.D., the Ruth Dow Doan Professor of Biologic Nanotechnology and Chief of the Division of Allergy, serves as the Institute's first director. This Regentially chartered research institute brings together a larger group of interdisciplinary researchers to apply the techniques and knowledge from the physical sciences to biological and medical research. M-NIMBS will have centralized facilities and core resources that enable interdisciplinary teams of faculty to collaborate. It is expected that the interaction of nanoscale analytical science, synthetic materials science, and engineering with biological systems offers great opportunities for the biomedical sciences.
