Improving the growth rate and uniformity of carbon nanotubes is a major hurdle to transfer of this technology from research to production. Nano@home is an open source project, as much as it is a science project, to help advance nanotechnology. Specifically it is set up to help in the design of nanometer-sized molecular machines that will make it feasible to manufacture just about anything that is possible within the constraints of the laws of nature. The process of building stuff with nanomachines is also called "Molecular Manufacturing" and is the ultimate goal of nanotechnology. Nanomachines will build with atomic precision and with an efficiency that we can only dream of at present. We will be able to produce new materials, faster and smaller computers, better and more efficient running appliances and other consumer products... Nanomachines will also be able to repair stuff.
