Researchers in Australia report development of a new type of gold nanoparticle that destroys the parasite responsible for toxoplasmosis, a potentially serious disease acquired by handling the feces of infected cats or eating undercooked meat. Their so-called "golden bullet" could provide a safer, more effective alternative for treating the disease than conventional drug therapy, they say.

Toxoplasma gondii, the parasite that causes the disease, infects more than 60 million people in the United States alone. Although most infected people have no symptoms, it can cause serious health problems in pregnant women and individuals such as AIDS patients or organ transplant recipients who have weakened immune systems.

In the new study, Michael Cortie and colleagues attached antibodies to the parasite onto gold nanorods that are activated by laser-light. A group of Toxoplasma-infected animal cells were isolated in cell culture dishes and subsequently exposed to these "golden bullets."

The cells were then exposed to laser-light, which heated up the "bullets" and destroyed the parasites. The treatment killed about 83 percent of the parasites containing the gold particles, the researchers say. They hope to develop a similar technique for killing the parasite in patients.

The second annual Johns Hopkins NanoBio Symposium will be held May 1-2, 2008 at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine

The Johns Hopkins NanoBio Symposium gathers experts involved in the study, training, research, development and commercialization of nanotechnology. Participants have the opportunity to hear about leading-edge technologies and recent scientific breakthroughs from experts using nanoscale solutions to solve problems in health care and medicine.

Nearly 400 people attended the 2007 NanoBio Symposium, and more than 100 posters were displayed. Due to the enthusiastic response, the 2008 event has been expanded to two days and includes a Thursday afternoon workshop with the theme “Nanotechnology for Cancer.”

On Friday morning, attendees will have the opportunity to hear talks by some of the world’s leading experts in nanobiotechnology. Friday afternoon’s poster session will feature a display of research projects representing departments from across the Johns Hopkins University, as well as from government and industrial entities.

Academic and clinical faculty, staff, students, representatives from government, business, industry, and the general public are invited to attend this enriching two-day event. Attendees also are invited to present posters, subject to INBT approval.

"We have developed a silicon locket at IIT. It will record ECG for 12 hours in one change of battery. The standard mobile interface will help the user send the SMS to the doctor about the latest ECG. This is going to help the patients immensely," Prof V Ramgopal Rao of IIT Mumbai said.

It is a hand held device, which will be with a patient all time and once fully charged the battery can record 12 hours of ECG, he said adding with constant ECG recording the doctors can find out where the actual problem is and can diagnose and give the prescription more precisely.

This mobile device will hit the market very soon, Rao, who was in the city to deliver a keynote address at a national conference on Applications of Nanotechnology, said.

The first commercially available products using this approach are the SilvaSorb® silver antimicrobial dressings and gel which incorporate AcryMed’s proprietary stabilized silver chemistry. SilvaSorb is sold in North America by Medline industries and in China by Guongdong Pharmaceuticals Import and Export Corporation. AcryMed is currently seeking additional geographic distribution partners for SilvaSorb.

Our three initial product candidates are designed to address large unmet clinical needs within cardiology, oncology and asthma. Combidex is our investigational molecular imaging agent consisting of iron oxide nanoparticles for use in conjunction with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to aid in the differentiation of cancerous from non-cancerous lymph nodes.
