Zia Laser Inc., an ISO 9001:2000 certified company, is the innovator in Quantum Dot (QD) lasers; our technology builds better lasers for communications networks and medical applications. NanoPore, Incorporated was founded in 1993 with the purpose of commercializing high porosity/high surface area materials for a wide range of applications including adsorbtion, gas separation, advanced thermal insulation, low-K dielectrics, and optics.

NanoPore's technical strengths are based on our strong focus on chemical processing of novel porous materials, an understanding of the relationships between the structure and properties of these types of materials, and from being directly involved with many customers on what their real needs are for advanced materials-based products.

The company's employees have published over 400 refereed publications, have made over 450 presentations, and over 100 patent applications have been submitted to the U.S. Patent Office. Over 69 US patents have already been issued related to NanoPore's development and commercialization activities. In addition, NanoPore (along with the University of New Mexico and Sandia National Laboratories) received R&D Magazine's "R&D 100 Award" in 1996 for work on ambient pressure aerogel process technology.

NanoPore's employees have given invited talks at many technical meetings including the national meetings of the Materials Research Society and American Ceramic Society, Sematech's low K workshop, Planar/USA, Planar/Asia, DUMIC, ULSI Advanced Metallization and the fifth International Symposium on Aerogels in France which is the preeminent scientific meeting on aerogels in the world. NanoPore and Sandia National Laboratories jointly hosted the Sixth International Symposium on Aerogels during October, 2000 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

NanoPore has developed several product lines including the NANOGLASS family of porous silica interlevel and intermetal dielectrics thin films for use in advanced semiconductors, NanoPore superinsulation vacuum insulation panels and inserts, and NanoCool adsorption cooling systems. Other porous materials developed at NanoPore have been used for applications including adsorbents, catalyst supports, and thickener/viscosity control.

NanoPore currently has research and development activities in both Albuquerque, New Mexico and Sunnyvale, California with manufacturing facilities located in Albuquerque.

Sandia is a multiprogram lab, primarily doing national defense R&D, energy, and environment projects. It's no wonder that venturing into the tiny domain of atoms and molecules is catching on. Amazing discoveries are being made, inspiring scientists the world over.
Throughout the scientific community, including Sandia National Laboratories, researchers say building things atom-by-atom or molecule-by-molecule will revolutionize the production of virtually every human-made object. Exciting prospects--but they also point out the promise of nanotechnology can only be realized if we learn to understand the special rules that control behavior at this small scale and develop the skill needed to integrate these concepts into practical devices.

The excitement stems from the understanding that the behavior of materials at the nanoscale is nothing like that at the large scale. Only recently have the necessary tools, such as powerful new microscopes, been developed to let researchers see these surprising behaviors. Sandia National Labs' scientists and engineers are among the leading architects and builders of these tools. To appreciate their unique design features, it helps to get an idea of the size of things at the atomic level. In nanoscience objects are measured in nanometers, 1 billionth of a meter. For comparison, the smallest features on current computer chips, measure about 200 nanometers. And a human hair is 100,000 nanometers thick.

Moving beyond observation, scientists are now poised to make exciting advances in nanotechnology, the creation of materials, devices and systems through the control of matter at the atomic level. By understanding and controlling the way molecules organize into nanoscale patterns, scientists are discovering new phenomena and learning to design materials with vastly different sets of properties. As one Sandia scientist put it "Design possibilities are limited only by one's imagination."

Sandia Labs continues to enhance its proficiency in many fields, all in keeping with its Department of Energy mission to unite science and engineering to serve national needs. And along with world class capabilities in materials science, micro fabrication - including 40,000 square feet of clean room space - high performance computing and systems engineering - Sandia is uniquely positioned to be the integrating center for new discoveries in nanoscience.
