Frank has been engaged in Nanotechnology and especially with Nanomedicine since ~1996, and has envisaged concepts and developed designs for a wide array of near-term (~3 to 5 years), and longer-term (~10 to 20 years), Nanotechnological and Nanomedical components, devices, and systems. He is currently in collaboration with a number of International Nanomedicine researchers from various Universities and research facilities who are together implementing a widely diverse range of expertise with the aim of transforming his innovative Nanomedical concepts into tangible and beneficial real-world medical platforms.

To date, Frank has written over 500 pages as relates to his Nanotechnology and Nanomedical research and concepts, based on the scientific literature, and has recently signed with CRC Press to generate a text that will explore in depth Nanomedical component, device, and systems design issues.

Frank has developed additional published works including a study that investigates the potential/prospects for DNA-based Manufacturing (written for the Center for Responsible Nanotechnology entitled "An Investigation of Nucleic Acid/DNA-Based Manufacturing"). A corporate intelligence-based research report was also generated. It explores potential applications of Nanotechnology for addressing the myriad of current environmental issues (written for BCC Research entitled "Nanotechnology in Environmental Applications").

The Road Ahead and To The Stars:

Hundreds of Nanotechnology-enabled products have already streamed into the marketplace, and many more are queued and pending. As with any new and powerful technology, it will be incumbant upon investigators and producers to ensure that any commercially targeted Nanotechnologies, as well as Nanomedical devices and systems, are developed in a safe, ethically, and morally responsible manner. With proper implementation, inclusive of contingencies for end-of-use recycling and/or engineered biodegradability, Nanotechnologies will undoubtedly lead to some amazing capabilities that were never considered possible.

In addition to opening many novel and exciting avenues for the eventual resolution of most primary human disease states, including aging, advanced Nanomedical devices and systems might also have potentially valuable applications when integrated as modular facets of an onboard medical suite for spacesuits and spacecraft. They may provide for a wider range of portable, compact, and robust diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities for medical facilities within permanent human habitats on the Moon and on Mars. The precise sectioning and imaging capabilities of FIB milling, combined with its ability to etch complex patterns (including bitmapped images) make focused ion beam microscopes the ideal tool for one-of-a-kind micromachining, or micromachining of a wide variety of materials.
In the example to the left, a comparatively flat diamond indenter tip has been FIB micromachined to produce a narrow, 100-nm diameter parabolic tip for sub-micron indentation into hard materials.
