Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) is the integration of mechanical elements, sensors, actuators, and electronics on a common silicon substrate through microfabrication technology. While the electronics are fabricated using integrated circuit (IC) process sequences (e.g., CMOS, Bipolar, or BICMOS processes), the micromechanical components are fabricated using compatible "micromachining" processes that selectively etch away parts of the silicon wafer or add new structural layers to form the mechanical and electromechanical devices.

Our current research program focuses on understanding, control, and applications of localized nucleation of nanostrcutures upon patterned surfaces. By coupling advances in experimental and modeling methods, we are advancing understanding of the concept of "templated assembly," the study of epitaxial nucleation as controlled by local surface variations. These advances provide the foundations for exploration and development of new nanostructured systems. Our current emphasis is on the epitaxial Ge(Si)/Si system, but we are extending the breadth of our discoveries through programs on templated assembly of metal oxide nanostructures and endothelial cells.

Basic research in nanotechnology and nanomedicine is rapidly producing commercially viable products. Political alliances and battle lines are beginning to gel. In 2005, governments, corporations and venture capitalists globally spent almost 10 billion US dollars on nanotechnology R&D. In light of the potential market value of nanomedicines, a sort of “patent land grab” is in full swing by “patent prospectors” as startups and corporations compete to lock up broad patents in these critical early days.

Nanotech researchers, executives, policy-makers, patent practitioners, and investors from the medical, business, patent and life sciences community will gather in Washington, DC in November for the 2nd Annual Nanomedicine Conference to discuss the most important applications of nanotechnology in drug delivery, diagnostics and medical devices. Dr. Raj Bawa, a biochemist and microbiologist, is a registered patent agent licensed to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office (PTO). He specializes in all aspects of biotechnology, nanotechnology and pharmaceutical patent law, including prosecution, patent strategy, application drafting, prior art searching, freedom-to-operate searching and technology research opinions. Dr. Bawa has over fifteen years of patent experience. He has been a researcher for more than twenty years. Since 2002, Dr. Bawa has served as a technology and patent consultant to national and international biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies. Additionally, Dr. Bawa is Advisor to the Office of Technology Commercialization at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York where since 1998, he has taught numerous courses in biotechnology, HIV/AIDS, microbiology, immunology and biodefense as a Visiting/Adjunct Professor. He is also Adjunct Professor of Natural and Applied Sciences at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia. There are about seventy faculty with active nano or quantum research programs at UVa. Annual sponsored research in these fields was recently estimated at $15 million per year, with over $20 million recent investment in instrumentation, and a slate of cutting edge courses are offered or under development.

The Institute has identified five initial research thrust areas that build upon existing excellence at UVa, and that have the potential to help define the scientific and technological futures in these fields:
