NNPP was incorporated in 1989 and quickly emerged as a leader in the new technology of diamond deposition for electronic and protective coating applications. It completed a $5 million initial public offering (IPO) in1993 under its previous name, SI Diamond Technology, Inc.

In 1993, upon discovery that their thin film diamond provided an excellent cathode for Field Emission Displays (FED's), NNPP acquired Plasmatron Coatings & Systems, Inc. to support development of production equipment for diamond field emission.

In 1995, NNPP further expanded by acquiring Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation's (MCC) diamond field emission intellectual property and fabrication facility. The facility supported SIDT's diamond field emission development and provided semiconductor wafer bumping and packaging services under the name of Diamond Tech One, Inc. (DTO).

During 1996, SIDT demonstrated high brightness field emission picture elements. The elements have shown great potential in applications of large outdoor displays and specialty lighting. This technology is currently being commercialized by Applied Nanotech Inc. (ANI).

In 1996 SIDT also demonstrated a complementary technology for large outdoor displays using liquid crystal display (LCD) technology. This technology provides a dynamic product for outdoor advertising and features a low price and excellent picture quality. This technology was developed and patented by EBT.

To better focus on its core areas of research at ANI and EBT, NNPP divested itself of Plasmatron, Inc. in 1997 and Diamond Tech One, Inc. in 1998.

To facilitate the electronic billboard development work at EBT, NNPP acquired Sign Builders of America, Inc., a small manufacturer of outdoor signage, in 1999. From 1999 through 2001, EBT developed a sun-visible outdoor electronic billboard, as well as indoor point-of-purchase display products.

In 2002, as the result substantial progress at ANI, a decision was made to focus the majority of our effort and resources on the intellectual property at ANI. NNPP sold the operations of Sign Builders of America, and restructured EBT to focus on licensing its technology, rather than continued development, marketing and sales of products.
Effective July 1, 2003, SI Diamond Technology, Inc. changed its name to Nano-Proprietary, Inc.

The efficiency of the DECTM Cell stems from its single step capture-and-conversion method. DECTM Cells use energy produced from the decay of a radioactive isotope, not a chemical reaction. The Company's patented architecture - based on the same physical principles that are employed in solar cells - and the selection of beta emitters ensures a power source that emits no radiation and is safer than chemical batteries for a broad variety of industrial and medical applications.

A key innovation is the distribution of the beta emitter energy source throughout the DECTM Cell volume. This means that the current generation is not just a surface effect, but occurs everywhere within the active volume. Thus, DECTM current sources are extremely efficient, converting a large fraction of the available decay energy into electric current. The first and second generations of tritium-powered BetaBatteriesTM are expected to produce 50- and 125-micro-Watts per cubic centimeter of active device volume, respectively.

BetaBatteryTM current sources are long-lasting, based on the selection of the beta source. Tritium has a half-life (T½) equal to 12.3 years. This means that after 12.3 years, the current output will be half its original value and a tenth of the original after 40 years. This productive life is orders of magnitude longer than chemical batteries. The decline in output for DECTM power cells will be quite predictable and can be accommodated by appropriate electronics design for each specific application.

He founded the Texas Nanotechnology Initiative in December, 2000, and still serves on its Board of Directors. In the Spring of 2003, Von Ehr testified before the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation for Bill S.189, The 21st Century Nanotechnology Research and Development Act. He was then invited to the Oval Office to be present when President Bush signed the Bill into law on December 3, 2003. He is also an invited member of the Nanotechnology Technical Advisory Group (NTAG) to the U.S. President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST).

During the late 70’s and early 80’s liposomes were reengineered to circulate longer in the blood and remain intact while doing so. This was done first by grafting the liposome with glycolipids, followed by a second generation and more robust grafting of the liposome with methoxypolyethylene glycol (mPEG), otherwise referred to as stealth™ liposomes. The PEG grafted liposomes increased the in vivo liposome stability, reduced MPS uptake and provided longer plasma residence times. In short, the liposome was engineered for use in the pharmaceutical industry, but still remand difficult to produce on large scale for production.

As a result, Azaya Therapeutics has developed its Protein Stabilized Liposome (PSL™) nanotechnology that utilizes a one step manufacturing process. The liposome product is prepared in a single step that encapsulates the active drug ingredient in the lipid layer of the liposome while forming active nanoparticles in situ (100-130 nm).

Although many of the known cyctotoxic agents are poorly soluble, Azaya’s PSL technology offers a potential solution that not only addresses formulation issues of poorly soluble compounds; it can also enhance the activity (efficacy) of known drug products through targeting mechanisms.

Azaya’s single step manufacturing process incorporates key characteristics that enhance existing liposomal technology for drug delivery. To date, there have been only moderate advances and Azaya’s PSL technology is a large step towards a more efficient and economical drug delivery system. Additionally, standardized manufacturing produces uniform particles that are necessary for passive targeting of cancer tumors via the EPR effect. In addition, Azaya Therapeutics PSL™ proprietary technology targets the over expression of key proteins that are found in tumor cells. With this superior technology, Azaya Therapeutics has conducted pre-clinical studies that have demonstrated improved therapeutic potential; enhanced pharmacokinetics, enhanced inhibition of tumor xenograft models, and evidence of increased tumor uptake of active compound.

Azaya is looking to partner with companies by offering an effective proprietary process to extend marketing life of existing or new development products by enhancing therapeutic performance.

Azaya’s initial product focus is to apply its PSL™ nanotechnology to currently approved drugs, such as Taxotere (docetaxel), in order to increase the probability of regulatory approval and reduce the associated risk and cost of development.

Azaya’s lead product candidate ATI-1123 (docetaxel) has demonstrated in preclinical studies superior pharmacokinetics and efficacy compared to Taxotere. Process development and implementation of GLP toxicology studies has been initiated. Alternatively, a secondary product candidate ATI-1150 (SN-38) is currently being evaluated in confirmatory preclinical studies.
