AcryMed is a development and manufacturing company focused on the introduction of novel medical products that help heal wounds or reduce infections. AcryMed develops products from its proprietary technologies through clinical investigation, regulatory clearance, and manufacturing development. Alternatively, AcryMed also licenses its technologies to companies that want to enhance their own products.

AcryMed, Inc. was founded in 1993 by Dr. Bruce Gibbins. Dr. Gibbins obtained his Ph.D. in Bacteriology and Public Health from Washington State University, and then spent several years as a professor of microbiology in New Zealand. While there he participated in the founding of a company that developed the prototype for what would become AcryMed’s first product. Realizing that commercial success required being based in a larger market, Dr. Gibbins returned to the U.S. to found AcryMed and purchased the patents from the New Zealand company.

Under Dr. Gibbins’ direction, AcryMed substantially enhanced the original technology and developed a proprietary skin substitute material branded Microlattice®. This became the foundation for the company’s first commercial product, an advanced moist wound care dressing marketed initially under the AcryDerm brand and currently in the U.S. by Smith & Nephew under the FlexiGel® brand. Unlike other advanced dressings, FlexiGel is able to manage moisture levels in the wound under a wide range of conditions. If the wound is too dry it donates moisture and if it is too wet it absorbs excess moisture to provide a healthy environment for healing wounds.

In addition to this moisture management capability, Microlattice matrix is also an optimal vehicle to deliver active agents to the body over an extended time. A wide range of active agents have successfully been integrated into Microlattice to produce devices that deliver therapeutically significant quantities of agents ranging from elemental oxygen to protein growth factors. The first commercially available products using this approach are the SilvaSorb® silver antimicrobial dressings and gel which incorporate AcryMed’s proprietary stabilized silver chemistry. SilvaSorb is sold in North America by Medline industries and in China by Guongdong Pharmaceuticals Import and Export Corporation. AcryMed is currently seeking additional geographic distribution partners for SilvaSorb.

AcryMed’s scientists have developed and patented two other silver antimicrobial technologies for treating medical devices by direct incorporation or surface impregnation. The company is currently investigating partnership opportunities with medical device companies desiring a state of the art antimicrobial claim.

The formation of the Nanotechnology/Microtechnology Practice at Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt follows a new alliance among Oregons three largest public universities, the GovernorТ’s office, the states congressional delegation, legislature and industry that has targeted a key new area of economic opportunity for the Pacific Northwest.

The alliance, called ONAMI - the Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute (www.onami.us) (previously the Multiscale Materials Devices Initiative or MMDI) leverages the complementary research strength of Oregon State University, University of Oregon, Portland State University, Pacific Northwest Laboratory and private sector players such as Hewlett-Packard, Intel Capital and FEI.

Some of the research that ONAMI is undertaking includes development of a wide range of very small, superefficient devices - from fist-sized heat pumps and dialysis filters the size of a matchbox to higher capacity chips for the semiconductor industry and the next generation of ink-jet printers. These innovations could lead to new commercial firms in Oregon and elsewhere.

The Oregon Nanoscience and Microtechnologies Institute is an unprecedented and powerful collaboration involving Oregon's three public research universities - Oregon State University, Portland State University, University of Oregon; the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Richland, WA); the state of Oregon; selected researchers from the Oregon Graduate Institute and the Oregon Health and Sciences University School of Dentistry; and the world-leading "Silicon Forest" high technology industry cluster of Oregon and southwest Washington.

The genesis of ONAMI began in 2000 with collaborations between the Center for Microtechnology-Based Energy, Chemical and Biological Systems at Oregon State University and the Materials Science Institute and Center for Advanced Materials Characterization at the University of Oregon. The partnership expanded in 2003 with an initiative at Portland State University's Center for Emerging Technologies.

Many collaborative projects and proposals among the three campuses are now in progress. In 2002, OSU and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory announced the formation of a joint Microproducts Breakthrough Institute to conduct applied research and transfer technology to both small and large businesses.

Together, the ONAMI partners are performing leadership research in several aspects of nanoscience, nanostructures, materials characterization, microfluidics, process intensification and microfabrication, and applying this research to both short- and long-term commercial opportunities ranging from computers to healthcare, and energy systems to environmental remediation. Total competitively funded research over the last 5 years has been approximately $75M. We are embarked on $40M in capital projects, which will include user facilities and startup tenant space for materials characterization, microfabrication, product design, and product testing.

Schrodinger's initial product, Jaguar, provides solutions to the Schrodinger equation, the fundamental equation describing molecular structure and energetics. Jaguar has a 5-10X performance advantage over its competition, and at present is used in nearly all major US pharmaceutical companies.

In December 1998, Schrodinger acquired rights to the MacroModel technology, developed by Clark Still at Columbia and marketed through Columbia up to that time. Schrodinger's Scientific Advisory Board members have world class expertise in biomolecular modeling and simulation.
