Overview of NQPI

Since its formation in 2001, the Ohio University Nanoscale and Quantum Phenomena Institute (NQPI) has worked to promote research excellence in the nanoscale science and engineering of its members. The organization is a highly interdisciplinary entity with 26 members from two colleges and seven departments. NQPI members have developed on-going and steadily growing cross-campus collaborations. Several of these research efforts in nanoscience are already highly successful, as measured by strong external support and international recognition.

Mission Statement:
•To enable a collective voice and visibility for nanoscience at Ohio University
•To foster cross-disciplinary research and educational activities in nanoscience at Ohio University
•To enable Ohio University to attract major research and educational grants, conferences, workshops, awards and accolades to Athens

Research of NQPI:
The focus of nanoscience at Ohio University has developed into two major NQPI categories. In 2004, the Biomimetic Nanoscience and Nanoscale Technology Initiative (BNNT) was formed as a research thrust of NQPI. The primary focus of BNNT is on Soft Nano. BNNT’s research includes the following three overlapping areas:
•Nanomaterials
•Nanosensors
•Nanomedicine

NQPI’s other focus is on Hard Nano research involving surface science and condensed matter areas. Soft and Hard Nano are areas of nanoscience that overlap, and almost all members of BNNT are members of NQPI. The Hard Nano research has been condensed into the following three focus areas where Ohio University already has particular strengths in both experiment and theory:
1. Nanoelectronics, nanophotonics, nanomagnetism and nanospinstronics
2. Nanoscale Properties, Manipulation, and Assembly
3. Quantum Structures, Nanocrystals, and Nanosensors
Grants and Awards
Members of NQPI currently comprise a network of cutting-edge researchers who already bring in millions of dollars in external grant support, often through prestigious awards including:

• National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER Award
• NSF Presidential Early CAREER award in Science & Engineering
• Two NSF Nanoscale Interdisciplinary Research Team Awards
• Funding from the Office of Naval Research and the National Institute of Health

Educational Activities:
NQPI members have formulated specific plans for a Nanoscience Graduate Education Program that involves NanoMENTORING and a NanoEXCHANGE. The program is designed to bring students from across the campus, and across the world together to increase and strengthen collaborations. The program will eventually lead to a Graduate Certificate in Nanoscience. An Undergraduate Certificate will also be available.
Current educational investments include:
Co-supporting of nanoscience colloquia
• Hosting scientific visitors at Ohio University
• Outreach activities for Athens-area school children

In May, 2005 CMPND was awarded $22.5 million from the State of Ohio’s Third Frontier Project. In return, by 2009, CMPND will contribute toward nanotechnology research and commercialization more than $29 million in cash contribution and nearly $49 million of in-kind support from Ohio industry, federal funding agencies, collaborating national labs, and participating universities. The awarded funds are being used to purchase new equipment and upgrade facilities for producing tomorrow’s high-value polymer-based nanoscale materials, devices, and processes that require extreme precision, highly controlled manufacturing environments, high speed, and automated quality monitoring capabilities, things not extensively found in Ohio’s industries. The new equipment and facilities enable scale-up and prototyping and testing of materials, processes, and device assembly techniques.

Technical training and outreach programs at OSU, UD, and UA, working with other collaborators, have been created to facilitate the transfer of product and process technologies to Ohio’s polymer industry, speeding their realization in highly competitive commercial products; and enabling the re-establishment of growth in revenue and jobs in Ohio’s #1 industry. Finally, an interdisciplinary research and training program helps students and industrial researchers develop skills needed to pursue careers in the rapidly-growing field of nanotechnology and enhance the competitiveness of Ohio industry, both now and in the future. In total CMPND’s strategy creates jobs in Ohio by linking ‘technology push’ research innovations and ‘market pull’ industrial needs to realize both near-term and longterm commercialization.
