Faculty and Students of the IAM are currently drawn from the Curriculum on Applied and Materials Sciences (CAMS), the Department of Chemistry, the Department of Computer Science, the Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Physics and Astronomy.

Our goal is to create a new multidisciplinary research institute across the boundaries of traditional sciences where exciting new disciplines such as nanoscience and biomedical engineering emerge. The time is ripe for a new type of nanoscience and materials institute at UNC that will pool our collective resources, manage shared facilities, provide concrete infrastructure for broader collaborations, and extend our ability to do cutting-edge research. Initial discussions of such an institute among a small group of UNC faculty members over the 2001-2002 academic year quickly led to the official creation of the IAM. In September 2002, UNC Chancellor James Moeser announced UNC's support for the IAM saying, "Some will argue that we cannot afford new initiatives in the current environment. There were over three billion biochemical assays performed in the United States, European Union and Japan in 2000 that cost over $24 billion(B) to perform. Most were done in 96 or 384 well plates in 50-299 microliter(uL) volumes. These relatively large volumes necessitate the creation of extensive infrastructures for generating, storing and disposing of the required reagents and labware. Attendant problems include evaporation, air bubbles, long incubation times and reagent stability all of which limit boththroughput and quality of data.

Nanolytics' proprietary technology eliminates all of these problems. We provide an open platform for controlling precisely the dispensing, movement and positioning of nanoliter scale droplets (nanodroplets). Theextant platform consists of a biochip containing 10,000 "virtual" wells each of which defines a nanodroplet, and a computer-controlled microactuator to move and position the nanodroplets independently. "Open platform" means it is compatible with any current assay protocol, it is capable of running multiple protocols on the same chip and it can be reconfigured "on-the-fly". The use of nanodroplets means that compared to that of traditional plates, assay density is increased by 50-200 fold, incubation times are decreased by 100 fold, and all reagents can be decreased by 1000 fold. These advantages mean that assay throughput is increased 5,000-20,000 fold. Coupled with the fact that our platform is compatible with existing assay facilities and instrumentation, it is clear that Nanolytics has the ability to change dramatically the way all assays will be done for the foreseeable future.

Our Resource aims to provide tools that are, like a lens, transparent and easy to use, yet as powerful and as versatile as contemporary computing technology can make them - tools that enable direct viewing of, and interaction with, real and simulated macromolecules, viruses, and cells. Virtual filters enable the transformation and overlay of multiple data sets in order to map them from the raw instrument data formats onto more natural and useful views. Computer graphics enables direct visual comparisons between a scientist's conception of an object (as seen in the mind's eye) and the object of study - either a model stored within a computer or a real, physical object scanned by a probe microscope. Haptic (force-feedback) display coupled to the microscope's tip enables real-time exploration of the properties of real and simulated objects, touching and moving them to feel how they respond. In the early 1980s, the state’s General Assembly appointed a legislative study commission to determine how North Carolina could ensure long-term economic benefits from biotechnology.

A yearlong study by the commission concluded that North Carolina needed a private, non-profit organization dedicated exclusively to biotechnology development.

The state legislatures then established the North Carolina Biotechnology Center, headquartered in Research Triangle Park, as the world’s first government-sponsored organization dedicated to developing the biotechnology industry.
Mission

The 66-member staff seeks to provide long-term economic and societal benefits to North Carolina by supporting biotechnology research, business and education statewide.

The Biotechnology Center is not a site for laboratory research or company incubation. Instead, it works to strengthen the research capabilities of North Carolina’s companies and universities.

This strategy avoids duplication of effort and uses limited resources more efficiently.
Funding

The Biotechnology Center receives nearly all of its funding from the General Assembly. Our state appropriation for FY 06-07 is $13.1 million, and our budget for the year is $17.6 million.

Since 1984 the Biotechnology Center has invested more than $187 million in state monies to develop biotechnology statewide.

Carbon nanotubes have potential applications as high strength and light weight materials, for nanometer scale electronic and mechanical devices, and for energy storage.

By combining the experimental and theoretical research at UNC and NCSU this project aims at understanding and controlling the materials chemistry and physics of nanotubes and nanotube based materials, evaluating their potential applications in structural reinforcement, and energy storage, and developing prototype nano mechanical and electronic devices.

Our approach combines synthesis with both ex-situ and in-situ characterization at both bulk and nano-meter scale with theory and simulation.
