The LIFOR® technology is the nanoparticle component of the solution, which carries the oxygen or any type of drug or nutrient that the developers wish to place into the nanoparticle. In this case, oxygen is key to metabolism.

Key attributes of the technology solution are:

• It promotes metabolism: The proprietary solution contains both an oxygen carrier and cellular nutrients, so it acts at the cellular, not just organ level.

• It is suitable for use under varying conditions. The solution has physical and functional properties that may allow it to preserve organs over a wide range of temperature gradients. In addition, the oxygen delivery capacity of the solution is less sensitive to changes in pH, which can occur during current storage methods.

• Oxygen stability The solution has a slower rate of autoxidation and longer circulatory retention than any other known oxygen carriers.

• Less vasoactive: The solution does not cause as much vasoconstriction as some of the other known hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers. In addition, the high colloid oncotic pressure exerted by the solution may open vascular beds and reduce tissue edema. As a result, the solution may also increase the effectiveness of oxygen delivery and decrease organ morbidity during transport.

• Non-Protein Solution: The majority of oxygen-carrying solutions on the market today use animal protein as a carrier. The LIFOR® solution is made of synthetic materials for oxygen delivery. The scare of animal protein viruses is not an issue here.

The oxygen-carrying solution can maintain the organ or tissue's metabolic rate, not only stopping further damage from occurring, but also reversing recovery damage. This is a major advance over current technology

Micropore Technologies, LLC, is based in Madison, NJ and is the sister company of Micropore Technologies, Ltd. (UK), which was established in 2003. These organizations are commercializing products and technology based on novel emulsification processes using their patented metallic membranes. The discoveries for these technologies originated in the department of chemical engineering at Loughborough University (UK). The intellectual property (IP) resides in Micropore Technologies, Ltd., with the University holding an equity position in the company.

The principal inventor, Richard Holdich, is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at Loughborough University. He has published many papers in the field, and is author of a book on Particle Technology (1). His research on surface filter membranes led to the inventions of the emulsification processes capable of forming liquid or solid particles with the average size controlled over a narrow range. Particle diameters can be controlled from as low as 10 microns to 600 microns.

Micropore Technologies has now demonstrated at the pilot scale a proprietary process to disperse water-based ingredients as stable spherical particles in fatty substances, e.g., water in chocolate. Additionally, development work is underway with major industrial companies to form polymeric and other types of particles as suspensions in water, which are subsequently dried to yield mono-disperse solid spheres. One example is the use of these solid particles as chromatography beads. Products based on the technology are under development in the US and Europe, although the range of applications still needs to be more fully explored.

We focus our nanotechnology research on the use of single walled and multiwalled carbon nanotubes for hydrogen storage. In cooperation with our research partners at the the University of Szeged in Hungary and Tsinghua University in China, we make our carbon nanotubes optimized to our particular applications.

The storage of Hydrogen in carbon nanotubes is accomplished with the use of an electric field. The best way to study the electric field loading of carbon nanotubes is by making a C/N electrode in a Ni-CN battery configuration. InMat technology is based on the principle that the diffusion of molecules through a polymeric film can be significantly reduced if impermeable platelet fillers are aligned in such a way as to significantly increase the distance a molecule must travel. The larger the aspect ratio of the filler particles, i.e. the larger the ratio of their lateral dimension to their thickness, the more effective they are in obstructing the diffusion of molecules trying to get through the film.

This concept is well known. In particular, there has been considerable work both in industry and academia over the last 5-10 years on the use of exfoliated clay as a filler. Exfoliated clay differs from other flat particles such as mica or aluminum flakes in its thickness. Clay belongs to a family of minerals that have a layered structure. The atoms within a single layer are tightly bound together, but the forces between layers are relatively weak. It is therefore possible to insert molecules between the layers spreading them apart. Furthermore, under the correct physical and chemical conditions, one can completely separate one atomic layer from its neighbors above and below. Thus one has molecularly thin sheets that are typically about 10 Angstroms (or 1 nm) in thickness, and can be anywhere from 0.1 to 10 microns in extent. The use of such particles to reduce the permeability of polymers, as well as to improve mechanical properties is an important part of nanocomposite technology.
