The development of 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride (Si-QAC) represented a monumental advancement in the method of delivery of an antimicrobial. Using an alkoxysilane-coupling agent reacted to a quaternized amine, researchers were able to covalently link this novel antimicrobial monomer directly to a surface. The bound monomers then react with each other to form a cross-linked polymer of extremely high molecular weight and durability, thereby producing an essentially permanent antimicrobial surface. Through a series of radioisotope labeling and microbial assays researchers demonstrated that the antimicrobial activity did not result from release of the material and that it is a surface-associated phenomena.

The immobilization of an antimicrobial agent provides significant advantages over conventional antimicrobials. Since the activity is not dependant upon release and diffusion of the antimicrobial molecule, the activity remains constant over time. Moreover, the active molecule is localized in highly concentrated form on the treated surface. Since this is where proliferation of microbes occurs, the antimicrobial is effectively delivered specifically to the environment of importance. This not only extends the potency of the agent, but also minimizes the risk of the development of resistance. Indeed, scientists were able to demonstrate that resistance and adaptation does not occur. Moreover, the permanent attachment of the antimicrobial molecule to the surface avoids the potential exposure risks associated with conventional antimicrobials.

Si-QAC works through a two-step process. First, the hydrophobic alkyl chain inserts into the similarly hydrophobic cell wall of an organism that it comes in contact with. As the alkyl chain penetrates the delicate cell wall, the wall is weakened. Second, as the cationic quaternary ammonium group comes in contact with the cell wall it disrupts the ion flow and causes leakage into or out of the cell wall, usually resulting in the cell losing its contents or actually bursting. The charged quaternary ammonium alkyl group remains unchanged and is available to repeat the process indefinitely.

Si-QAC is much more potent than a non-silylated quaternary ammonium compound because the silyl group bonds to surfaces (and it self) and causes the antimicrobial portion to become locally concentrated. Thus, it is not a single molecule responsible for cell death, but an enormous amount of molecules all working in unison.

Nanotechnology involves the design, characterization, production and application of structures, devices and systems by controlled manipulation of size and shape at the nanometer scale (atomic, molecular and macromolecular scale) that produces structures, devices and systems with at least one novel/superior characteristic or property. Although the full potential of nanotechnology will ultimately be realized in the distant future, basic research in nanoscience is rapidly producing commercially viable products. In fact, governments and industries across the globe are staking their claims by investing billions for research. Clearly, international rivalries are growing and political alliances and battle lines are beginning to form. In fact, in 2005, governments, corporations and venture capitalists globally spent almost 10 billion US dollars on nanotechnology R&D while emerging nanotechnology was incorporated into more than 30 billion dollars in manufactured goods. Given this backdrop, the potential future impact of nanotechnology on society could be huge. Public perception has also been steadily increasing as mention of nanotechnology in the media has dramatically risen in the past few years. Furthermore, in light of the potential market value of nanotech-related products, a sort of “patent land grab” is in full swing by “patent prospectors” to lock up broad patents in these critical early days. Upon attending this symposium, you will be impressed by the numerous novel applications and products which cleverly integrate biological, information and material sciences that are under development or nearing commercialization. For example, various targeted drug delivery systems (taking advantage of unique delivery platforms like dendrimers, nanoparticles and nanoliposomes) and personalized medicine (a result of advances in pharmacogenetics and pharmacogenomics) are beginning to change the landscape of medicine.

This symposium focuses on nanotechnology’s interdisciplinary nature, highlighting cutting-edge R&D in nanomedicine, nanoelectronics, and nanomaterials. The presentations will explore commercial opportunities and offer networking
opportunities to researchers from industry, government, academia, and other professions. We will discuss current factors fueling nanotechnology’s growth, start-up opportunities and potential bottlenecks to viable commercialization. We will also examine future societal, environmental, ethical, and privacy issues which may arise; the impact of nanotechnology on the future soldier and warfare; and the vital role of US regulatory agencies, such as the FDA, EPA and the US Patent Office.

All presentations will be 20-25 minute Power Points. They will be fast-paced, focused and will rely upon extensive color graphics and animations. All registered attendees will receive issues of the peer-reviewed journals, Nanotechnology Law & Business and Nanomedicine. In addition, the first 30 registrants will receive a 500-page handbook containing classic papers and reference materials pertaining to nanotechnology and nanoscience.

RTP Company compounds a wide range of engineering thermoplastics. Compounding is a process of melt blending plastics with other additives. This process changes the physical, thermal, electrical or aesthetic characteristics of the plastic. The final product is called a compound or composite.

Compounding starts with a base resin or polymer. RTP Company has experience with more than 60 resin systems, each of which has unique characteristics that make it suitable for use in certain applications.

By incorporating an extensive range of additives, fillers, and reinforcers, a wide range of properties can be achieved in conductivity, flame retardance, wear resistance, structural, and precolored. Our engineers independently select the additives based on your unique performance criteria. For example, glass fibers can be added at various levels to increase stiffness in a resin that is more flexible than desired.

Compounding is done in several steps. Resin and additive(s) are fed through an extruder where they are combined. The melted compound exits the extruder in strands about the diameter of yarn. These strands are cooled and cut into pellets. The pellets are thoroughly inspected and must pass 10 internal quality checks before being delivered to customers for use in injection molding or sheet extrusion.

Spinnakers initial 25nm gate length SB-CMOS technology will deliver a 5X+ speed/power advantage over the industry's most aggressive conventional CMOS transistor, at a reduced cost. Spinnakers initial advantage, and subsequent scalability places its transistor roadmap 3-4 years ahead of the corresponding Intel roadmap.

NVE's enabling technology is called spintronics, which uses an electron's spin rather than its charge to sense, store, or transmit digital data. The technology could yield nothing less than the next generation of microelectronics.

NVE was founded in 1989 as Nonvolatile Electronics Inc. with technology from Honeywell, Inc. (now Honeywell International). NVE became a public company in November 2000 and Nasdaq listed in January 2003.

In 1990, we began research to develop the world's first practical products using revolutionary spintronic materials. In addition to manufacturing our own products, we license intellectual property for a revolutionary new type of memory called MRAM to memory companies including Motorola Inc. and Cypress Semiconductor. We have licensed some of our coupler technology to Agilent Technologies for production under their brand.

In 1994 we introduced the world's first spintronic sensors for factory automation and automotive markets. These sensors outperform competing devices in precision and miniaturization.
