Nanotechnology has emerged as the single largest revolutionary science topic of the 21st century. The ability to manipulate materials on a very small scale will lead to extraordinary advances in areas such as material science, medicine and energy. The possibilities have captured both attention and resources globally. The U.S. federal government alone will spend $1.5 billion on nanotechnology in FY2007.

While the primary focus is still on fundamental research, it is vital that the infrastructure needed to realize a return on this substantial investment also begin to emerge. Use of nanotechnology in myriad applications will require new manufacturing methods and facilities. Developed in conjunction with Oak Ridge National Laboratory, C³'s Molecular Infusion Surface Treatment (MIST) has outperformed conventional coatings by 10x for cutting tools and by 40x for aluminum die casting tooling accessories. Customer feedback and field test reports clearly indicate that improved performance and life-extension offered by C³'s treatment are exceptional and have never been experienced by other conventional coating techniques. The metalworking tools and catalytic devices which have been treated have also seen increased lifetime and higher performance. In addition to industrial tools and components, C³'s treatment holds other potential applications ranging from improved performance for catalytic filters to improved efficiency for solid oxide fuel cells.

MIST can infuse up to 57 elements in any combination into the surface of metals and alloys, securing these elements with a thin, nanostructural coating. The MIST process can be performed on site.

According to Dr. Jacob Stiglich, a Research Associate with the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering at the Colorado School of Mines, C³'s MIST is cost effective and user friendly: “I have never seen a simpler, more cost effective process that is as user friendly as the C³ surface treatment." Stiglich added: "In my 30-plus years of working on surface treatments, I have never seen a technology with C³’s wide range of imparted properties, and scope of potential applications that reach into so many industries.”

In the early 1960’s, a graduate student at the Georgia Institute of Technology named Warren Hendrix and his advisor, Dr. Clyde Orr, built what is believed to be the first all-metal, transportable gas adsorption analyzer. Their vision was to provide a commercially available instrument that would allow anybody (with just a small amount of training) to measure the surface area of materials and particulates using gas adsorption methodology.

The two first realized the need for such an instrument two years earlier while working on a research project involving measuring the surface area of particles using glass rack technology (a slow and tedious process requiring constant monitoring). They understood that with better-designed equipment, they could simplify the complexities of particle analysis and convey the benefits of this science to industry.

The term "micromeritics" is used to describe the science and technology of small particles. It was the the obvious choice for the name of the Micromeritics Instrument Corporation, founded by Warren Hendrix and Clyde Orr in July of 1962.

Micromeritics was the first company to market commercially automated surface area, mercury penetration, and sedimentation particle size analyzers. Micromeritics is world-renowned for its pioneering innovations in these areas and others, including porosimetry, density, zeta potential, and chemisorption analysis. The company has also led the way in the areas of liquid chromatography, density, automatic sample delivery, TPD/TPR chemisorption, balanced adsorption surface area, and DFT Plus® data interpretation. The company holds over forty patents in these combined areas of particle characterization.

Research into the properties of nanometer-scale single crystallites has recently matured into a field that is both fundamental and wide-ranging, although a major source of motivation arises from natural phenomena and from technological questions concerning ultimate limits on the miniaturization of solid-state device elements.

The electronic, optical and magnetic properties of nanocrystals are modified from those of extended solids by the quantum size effects, which arise from the discreteness of the energy level structure and finiteness of the number of electrons within a band. These are also under investigation by spectroscopic methods, both for isolated particles and for those in arrays of weakly coupled equivalent crystallites. These arrays constitute a novel material form with high potential for unusual and useful properties.

Theoretical modelling, or simulations, are critical in establishing ideas and models for the structural, processing, and other properties of nanocrystals; supercomputer-based simulations are carried out in association with the Georgia Tech Center for Computational Materials Science.
