To be held March 26-28 at the Caribe Royale, in Orlando, FL, this conference will explore emerging applications in nanotechnology and discuss ways that these technologies will impact the user by providing competitive advantages in the development of new coatings products.
Developed by the FSCT 2008 Nanotechnology Task Force, this ACSeries program is a two and one-half day symposium featuring 32 paper presentations, supplemented with a keynote and plenary lectures. Industry experts will explore such areas as nanoscale design and synthesis, nanomaterials characterization, markets and applications, as well as functional activity.
Scientists, formulators, engineers, and students from academic, government, and industrial laboratories who are involved in any aspect of coating development using nanotechnologies will benefit in exploring these new methodologies. Managers and sales personnel will benefit by increasing their awareness of the new tools available and their impact on creative innovations and technologies. NanoBlox, Inc. is currently launching projects that offer new commercial markets in both the commercial, industrial and biomedical fields. We are currently working on perfecting our ability to functionalize our primary particle, the nanodiamond which is a derivative of detonation synthesis. Using this Ultra dispersed (UDD) or Ultra crystalline, diamond we have found improved techniques for utilizing this material in designing improved coatings using electrolys and electroplating techniques. These create a denser grain distribution which can create dry lubrication between surfaces. This Nano coating technology can apply to various industries including the DOD and armaments, as well as anodized coatings for various household products. NanoBlox has also launched our perfected stable colloidal lubricant concentrate for both the automotive and marine industries.

Although the future seems promising for these commercial applications our most innovative technologies are being developed for the Biotechnology and Biomedical fields. Currently we are coordinating efforts thru both Drexel University and FAU biotechnology programs for creating new biocompatible, nontoxic materials. In fact Nanoblox has already completed animal studies at Charles River Laboratories and will soon complete cellular cytotoxicity evaluations at FAU. This work on our previously developed and newer materials demonstrates our continued effort at establishing ourselves as the source for adaptable biocompatible and tailored materials. By creating a pure sp3 carbon material (better than 95%) thru our oxidative process, we are able to functionalize this product to adapt to various market needs including improved thermal and electrical conductivity, controlled strength and durability in various polymer composites, improved porosity for drug delivery and new devices for biomedical applications.

Located on the ground floor of FIU’s Engineering Center, a 36-acre research facility approximately one-half mile from the university’s main campus, the $15 million Motorola Nanofabrication Research Facility is an integral part of the Advanced Materials Engineering Research Institute (AMERI), FIU’s broader materials research program.
Harnessing the synergy inherent in the study and development of nanoscale technologies, the
facility boasts:

• specialized equipment required to develop new and novel fabrication techniques unique
to the creation of functional materials and devices that are no greater than 100 nanometers (1,000 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair);
• a full complement of standard semiconductor processing equipment to leverage the capabilities of robust and proven techniques;
• state-of-the-art analytical tools to study and characterize these nano-sized devices, as well as the materials and processes used to make them.

Motorola’s donation of fully-functional nanofabrication research laboratories enabled FIU to build this facility.
